The pickle jar as far back as I can remember sat on the floor beside the dresser in my parents' bedroom. When he got ready for bed, Dad would empty his pockets and drop his coins into the jar.
When the jar was filled, we would take the _____ to the bank. Each time, as he gave the box of coins to the bank worker, he would say proudly, "These are for _____ son's college fund. He'll never work at the factory all his life like me."
The years passed, and I finished the _____ and took a job. Once, while visiting my parents, I noticed that the pickle jar in my parents' bedroom was _____. I stared at the place beside the dresser where the jar had always stood. The pickle jar had taught me far _____ than anywords could have done.
When I married, I told my wife Susan about the _____ part the lowly pickle jar had played in my life. In my mind, it showed how much my _____ had loved me. No matter how difficult things got at home, Dad _____ to doggedly drop his coins into the jar.
The first Christmas after our _____ was born, we spent the holiday with my parents. After dinner, Susan carried the baby into my parents' _____ to diaper* her. When Susan came back into the living room, there was _____ strange in her eyes. She took my hand and _____ me into the room.
"Look," she said softly, her eyes directing me to a place on the floor ______ the dresser. To my amazement, there stood the old pickle jar, as if it had never been ______, the bottom already covered with coins. I walked over to the pickle jar, dug down into my pocket, and ______ a fistful of coins.
With the strong feeling choking me, I dropped the coins into the jar. I looked up and saw Dad who is carrying the baby. Our eyes tacked, and I knew he was feeling the same feelings I felt.

【題目】 For a long time, scientists believed that only humans were left-or right-handed. However, recent studies have shown that this isn’t true. Just like people, animals favor one side or the other.
In Ireland, scientists studied a group of 42 cats. They gave them three tasks. One was to get a delicious piece of fish out of a bottle. They found that the male cats preferred to use their left paw, and the female cats preferred to use their rights.
Being left-or right-handed isn't limited (有限的) to arms and legs. It can include eyes, ears, claws, and even tails. In Italy, scientists discovered that dogs wag their tails to the right when they see something that they like. When they see something that they don’t like, their tails go to the left.
There are lots of fun examples. Left-handed dolphins swim in a different direction around the pool. Elephants like to swing their trunks in one direction. Even snakes prefer to curl up only one way.
Many people believe that polar bears are left-handed. They say, for example, that polar bears cover their black nose with their right paw, which helps them hide in the snow when they are hunting. Then they can sneak up(慢慢靠近) on a seal, and their left paw will be free to catch it.
Scientists, however, disagree. Some have watched polar bears for thousands of hours. They never saw the bears cover their nose during a hunt. They also saw no evidence(根據(jù)) that they were left-handed. Without taking any notice of this, many websites continue to say that polar bears are left-handed.
Scientists are still learning about animals and their behaviors. The next time you see an animal, whether it’s your pet cat or an elephant, try figuring out yourself which it prefers - left or right.
