【題目】 In 2015, US actress Brie Larson took home the Academy Award for Best Actress for her role in the movie Room. These days, the 29-year-old is standing her ground as a superhero.
Larson plays Carol Danvers, also known as Captain Marvel, in the movie of the same name. As a superhero, she has many superpowers, such as being able to fly as fast as light. The movie has become a huge success.
When Larson was offered the role, she didn’t accept it at the beginning. "I am not a person with much confidence. So, I needed a little bit of time to see if I can do it…" she said. Larson is no stranger to Hollywood, but it’s one thing to win an Oscar and another thing totally to star in a Marvel movie. She had no idea about playing a superhero. There would be lots of promotional (推廣) interviews. Facing all of these, she decided to go out of comfort zone (舒適區(qū)). "I was gonna push myself to do things that I never thought I could do. I challenged myself." she said.
Larson trained for nine months. She learned kungfu, practiced weightlifting and so on. But the biggest challenge was that she had to work with a cat — an animal that she was afraid of. "I was sick the whole time, but I insisted to work with it by myself. I was fine."
Varity magazine spoke highly of her acting. By playing Captain Marvel, Larson discovered her own weaknesses and turned them into confidence. Even just watching her recent interviews, one can tell from her body language that she had found something she didn’t have much before.

【題目】 Unlike students in China, Canadian high school students usually have lots of free time, especially during weekends, since Canadian teachers often give little homework. So how do Canadian teenagers spend their weekends? Well, volunteering makes up most of their free time.
In Canada, volunteering is a quite common thing among people of all ages, as they believe that being helpful is one of the most important qualities to have. There are many kinds of volunteer work. Chances to help are everywhere, including in schools, shopping malls, or even people's gardens.
Now, I'm volunteering for a charity (慈善機構). My job is to help the teachers at the charity's Chinese language school. I teach in a preschool class, where students are aged from 3 to 6.
When I first started, I was quite nervous as I'd never worked with little kids before.
Then, as time went on, I became more familiar with the students. One teacher asked me to help the youngest girl in the class draw a picture based on the word "grateful". As I was drawing and talking with her, I felt warm and peaceful and suddenly realized that it was not that difficult to work with children. When the class was over, I breathed out deeply, feeling really excited and even a little bit proud of what I'd done.
Volunteering gives us a chance to change someone's life, including our own. It gives us the satisfaction of helping others. Volunteering is also a great way to give back to society while developing social skills and meaningful experience for the days ahead. That's also the reason why Canaan high school students have to volunteer for at least 40 hours in order to graduate. I think helping other always good.
【1】Canadian students spend their weekends quite different from Chinese students.
【2】It's normal for Canadians to offer help in different places.
【3】Now, the writer is volunteering to teach the kids in a primary school.
【4】The writer managed to help a girl in the class, and the teacher was very satisfied.

【題目】 Have you ever forgotten where your socks are when you wake up in the morning? Can you remember what you ate for lunch a week ago? You may think that being forgetful is not a good thing. But now you should be thankful.
Scientists from University of Toronto found that forgetting actually is a key part of learning. Getting rid of (除去) unnecessary information can help our brains work better.
What kind of information is unnecessary? Scientists say that this may have something to do with the environment you live in.
In an environment that is always changing, our brains may require us to remember less. For example, a supermarket cashier (收銀員) meets many people every day and will probably only remember them for a short time. But a designer (設計師) who often meets his or her clients (客戶) will remember longer.
“That’s because our brains keep making new neurons (神經(jīng)元) from stem cells (干細胞). ”said Paul Frankland, a professor at the University of Toronto.
There is a special area in our brains called hippocampus (海馬體). It is important for us to learn and remember. When new neurons fit in the hippocampus, they renew our old memories. This could explain why you forget so much information about the time when you were very young.
However, being forgetful is not always good. When you don’t have enough sleep, you may have a hard time remembering new information. Sleep helps the brain store and keep new facts and information. Matthew Walker from the University of California told the Huffington Post.
