【題目】下面文章中有五處 (1—5) 需要添加標(biāo)題。請從以下選項 (A、B、CD、EF) 中選出符合意思的標(biāo)題。選項中有一項是多余選項。

1

Hopes, ambitions (抱負(fù)), dreams. How many of yours will you achieve? When you look back at your life in the future, will you have good memories of all the things that you did? Or will you regret all the things that you didn't do?

Of course, there's no easy road to success, but one thing is certain: success won't come if you don't do anything. So how do you do it? This four-step model will help you to make your dreams come true.

Step 1: 2

What would you like to do? Write down all your ambitions. They may be very general, such as I would like to be fitter. I want to be famous or It would be nice to have more friends. Or they may be more specific, like I've always wanted to play a musical instrument.

Step 2: 3

Now you need to do two things:

1. Choose one or two ambitions. If you try to do everything, you won't do anything.

2. Set a time limit (限定). This is very important, because you will have a goal and you will also know when you have reached it.

So, for example, I would like to be fitter. in Step 1 now becomes I will be fit enough to join a half-marathon race by the end of August.

Step 3: 4

Now that you've made your choice, what are you actually going to do to achieve your goal? So, in our example, I will be fit enough to join a half-marathon race by the end of August. becomes I'm going to join a running club. or I'm going to go jogging three times a week.

Step 4: 5

This is when you change your intentions (意圖) into specific actions. Prepare to do something at a specific time. If you don't do this, your dreams and plans will just stay as dreams and plans. So now I'm going to join a running club. becomes I'm meting the president of the Cheetahs Running Club on Monday evening at 530.

Don't let your ambitions die. Follow this four-step plan and make your dream come true.

A.Change I would like to.. . to I will. . .

B.Change I did. . . to I do. . .

C.How to be successful

D.Change I'm going to. .. to I'm doing.. . on. .. at. ..

E.Think about your ambitions

F.Change I will. . . to I'm going to. . .

【題目】 There was a baby whale named Ella. She lived with other whales in a deep bay. One day, she noticed something large pass overhead. It was as big as a whale, but it wasn't.

Ella had never seen a boat before. Although Ella was scared, she was curious(好奇的), too. She forced herself to swim to the surface. She saw several faces watching her. In fact, they looked very friendly. In the few months, Ella lost her fear of boats. People in the boats always enjoyed seeing her.

As time went by, people and boats became a part of her life. Whenever a boat passed overhead, she swam to the top to say hello. One night, Ella saw a lot of fish swimming around the bottom of a ship. Suddenly, she was caught by a fishing net. She fought hard to get free. Finally, she got away, but part of the net was tangled(纏住) in her mouth and around her tail. Ella was hurt and confused(困惑的). Slowly and sadly she made her way towards the deep ocean.

Many weeks passed, and the net in her mouth made it hard for her to eat. And every time she tried hard for air the net cut into her tail. But if she didn't get air every half an hour, she would die. Winter was coming, she had to move to warmer waters with others. However, this time she had no choice but to stay in the bay and wait to die.

One morning, to her surprise, the water was filled with boats. When the boats came closer, a person reached into the water. Soon many hands touched her. Ella felt them pulling the lines of the net. Moments later, she was free as before! The people were waving their starfish-shaped hands. Ella knew that the hands would always be there in her life.

2Why did Ella force herself to swim to the surface?

3How was Ella when she was caught by a fishing net?

4Where did Ella have to go before winter came?

5What happened to Ella after some people pulled the lines off her at last?

But parents are still under the pressure of trying to support their students' learning, saying they have been given an i2 task.

One parent said she spent the week working at her job, then the weekend catching up on all the work her children had missed, doing housework at night. Another single mother wakes at 3 a.m. to do her paid work so she can supervise (監(jiān)督) her children d3 the day.

"Do they understand that parents are fighting for our lives, our jobs, and our companies as well?" another parent said. "I' m a working mum. If I don't do my job, I may l4 it. I know things had to be done in a hurry. But parents have been thrown in the deep end.

Yvette McDonald, from the inner west, has two young children at a public primary school, which issues (發(fā)布) written lessons and requires typed, o5 communication, such as being present for roll call (點(diǎn)名) at the b6 and the end of each day. She has asked the NSW Department of Education to relax those rules, saying they were difficult to carry out.

"Parents are already at breaking point and we haven't even gone into formal lockdown, "she said. "Many of us are managing crisis at work, but then on top of that we're schooling our children as well. We feel as though we're failing, but we're not failing-we've been a7 to do very difficult things. We want to know what's essential and what's not."

【題目】Bacterial Quorum Sensing

Bacteria(細(xì)菌)play an important role in our lives. They can keep us alive as well as make us sick. It wasn’t until fairly recently that we learned bacteria can communicate with one another.

In the 1960s, researchers found that a kind of bacteria called Vibrio fischeri(費(fèi)氏弧菌) produced no light when they were alone, but that they exhibited great amount of light as the bacterial population grew to a certain number. How did this happen? How can Vibrio fischeri tell the difference between times when they’re alone and times when they’re in a community, and then all do something together?

Researchers found they talk to each other with a chemical language—signal molecules(信號分子). Vibrio fischeri makes signal molecules, and it also has a receptor on its surface that fits like a lock and key with a signal molecule. As the bacteria increase, more and more signal molecules are sent into the environment. When signal molecules increase to a certain amount, they lock down into those receptors and information comes into the bacteria, which tells them how many neighbors there are. As soon as they realize the population has hit the certain number, all of the bacteria behave as a group, making light together. In the past ten years, researchers have found all bacteria have systems like this: they make and recognize chemical words, determine(判斷)the size of the community, and carry out tasks that would be unsuccessful if a single one were to act alone. This process is called quorum sensing.

Most of the time, bacteria live with thousands of other species (種類)of bacteria. There has to be a language of interspecies communication. In fact, bacteria have another kind of signal molecule, which is the common language used by all species. Moreover, this kind of molecule has its own receptor. In this way, bacteria are able to count different populations, and then they decide what task to carry out depending on which species has the greatest population.

Knowing how bacteria communicate could influence how we fight disease. What if bacteria can’t talk or hear? They won’t recognize when there are enough bacteria and when to exhibit the group behavior to make us sick. Researchers are developing a method—to make molecules that look like the real ones and then they lock into the receptors to jam recognition of the real situation.

On the other hand, researchers also improve the conversation of the beneficial bacteria, so they can do things that we want them to do better than they would do on their own.

1According to the passage, what can we learn about quorum sensing?

A.Quorum sensing may happen when there is only one Vibrio fischeri.

B.Signal molecules are kept away from receptors during quorum sensing.

C.Most bacteria have similar systems to make light during quorum sensing.

D.Bacteria carry out a group task when their population hit a certain number.

2What can we learn from the passage?

A.The more species there are, the more group actions bacteria will take.

B.In different environments, bacteria have different interspecies languages.

C.Beneficial bacteria communicate better by themselves than harmful ones.

D.To fight disease, researchers try to turn off the communication between harmful bacteria.

3The passage is mainly about ________.

A.why bacterial population growsB.how bacteria communicate with each other

C.which bacteria help fight diseaseD.what scientists do to find quorum sensing
