【題目】閱讀短文, 根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容回答問題。

Garbage(垃圾) Island

You can’t see it from the air. It’s almost impossible to see from a ship. But somewhere in the North Pacific is a huge island of garbage, just below the water surface.

What is the island made of?

The garbage island is not an island, but a collection of millions of plastic and other objects. The water movements of Pacific Ocean bring the objects together and cause them to go around in a big circle.

Charles Moore found it in 1997 and named it “the Great Pacific Garbage Patch” .

Where does all the plastic come from?

Much of the garbage comes from everyday objects, such as shopping bags and water bottles. Some of these objects finally reach the ocean. Garbage from the western coast of North America takes about six years to reach it. Objects from East Asia take about a year. Other garbage comes from ships passing through the area.

Is the Garbage Patch dangerous?

The larger pieces of garbage are a problem for wildlife. For example, sea turtles(海龜)and seabirds often think the plastic is their food. They eat the plastic and die.

In addition, the plastic stops sunlight from reaching deeper water. Without sunlight, very small sea animals die. Then, there is less food for larger fish to eat.

What can we do to help stop it?

Cleaning up the island isn’t easy. But we can make people realize the problem. One environmentalist(環(huán)保主義者), David de Rothschild, is sailing around the world in boat made of plastic bottles to teach people about the problem of garbage in the sea.

Another idea is that we can recycle the plastic garbage. Environmental engineer Cesar Harada is building a robot that collects pieces of plastic. Harada hopes to use his robot in the Pacific. Harada also has a website for reporting environmental problems. He says, “I hope everybody can become an environmental activist.”

1What is the garbage made of?

2How long does it take objects from East Asia to reach the island?

3Is the garbage island dangerous?

4Why is David de Rothschild sailing in bottle boat?

5What can you do to help stop garbage island?

7 January, 2014

A new report says more and more international students are attending colleges and universities in the United States. It also notes a large increase in the number of international students from China.

These findings are from the latest Open Doors Report. The report documents the record number of international students in the United States during 2012, 2013 school year. It says more than seven hundred sixty-four thousand four-hundred such students were attending American colleges and universities during the last two years. That represents an increase of almost six percent than one year earlier.

On the other hand, the number of Americans studying overseas (海外) increased by one percent, which reached nineteen thousand this year.

The report says one hundred ninety-four thousand students at American colleges and universities were from

China. That is an increase of more than twenty-three percent over the year before. Peggy Blumenthal, an expert(專家) of international education, described the effect of the increase in Chinese students.

"Now they have been coming for some time. But this year was the highest level ever." She says many Chinese families are able to pay for the highest-quality education for their children. The children mainly choose to study in America.

"We know many of them have enough income to be able to afford to send them anywhere in the world that they want to go. And for the most part, looking around the world, Chinese students still prefer to come to the United States as their choice."

Chinese students are not the only ones who want to attend American colleges and universities. After China, India sends the second largest number of students to the United States for higher education. India has about one hundred thousand students in American schools. South Korea is third with about seventy two thousand students.

Why do so many foreign students study in the United States? Peggy Blumenthal provides one reason.

"The advantage America has is that we have a huge system and a very perfect system. So there are over four thousand universities and colleges in the United States. Among them are some top ones in the world, and what that tells us is there is still a lot of room to host international students."

Foreign students represent less than four percent of the total student population in American higher education. And from Learning English, that's the VOA Special English Education Report. I'm Bob Doughty. Thanks for listening.

3Which is NOT the reason why so many Chinese students go to the USA for further study?

A. Lots of Chinese families are able to pay for the highest-quality education for their children

B. The USA has a huge and a very perfect education system.

C. There is a lot of room to host international students in the USA.

D. The USA has some top universities and colleges in the world.

4Which of the following statement is true?

【題目】(A)

After living and teaching in China for 10 months, my wife and I returned to California to visit our children and friends. Many of them asked what we liked most about China. The friendly people, the wonderful food, and the beautiful sights were at the top of our list. Then one night, after yet another restaurant dinner with friends, I realized that there was one other thing that I really liked about China: No tipping.

Tippingisasubjectthathaslonginterestedme.

In America, the three kinds of services that require tipping are waiters/waitresses, taxidrivers, and barbers. The standard tip is now between 15 and 20 per cent of the bill, depending on the quality of service. Why these three particular services deserve this special treatment is a mystery to me. Why am I supposed to tip a waiter for bring me food when I don’t need to tip the flight attendant on an airplane for doing the same thing? Why do I need to tip a taxi drive, but not the bus driver? Why am I expected to tip the barber for cutting my hair but not the dentist for fixing my teeth? I have been a teacher for 39 years. No one has ever tipped me after a particularly successful class or lecture.

The whole concept of tipping doesn't make any sense. I have heard that there are some expensive restaurants in major cities in the US where the restaurant does not give the waiters any salary at all due to the large amounts of the tips.

The tipping problem in many European countries is solved by adding a 15 per cent to the bill. I prefer the Chinese solution: No tipping at all.

When I was visiting the US this summer, I went out to dinner several times with friends. Having spent 10 month in China not even thinking about tipping, I found it irritating to have to spend extra money on the meal -- especially when the amount of the tip would every often buy a meal in China. While I understand why China, as a developing nation, has gradually accepted many Western customary practices, I hope the Chinese are wise enough to never start the unnecessary practice of tipping.

1What made the writer realize that he liked no tipping most about China ?

A. Talking with his friends . B. Returning to California.

C. Giving a large amount of tips. D. Having dinner in a restaurant.

2If the bill is$200 in an European restaurant, how much should a customer pay as a tip?

A. $20 B. $30 C. $50 D. $100

3What’s the writers opinion on tipping in the US?

A. Wise B. Necessary C. Reasonable D. Annoying

4Which of the sentences is true?

A. All kinds of services need tipping in the US . B. The writer hoped China would never start tipping .

C. The writers whole family lived in China for 10 months. D. China has never accepted any western customary practices

5What can be the best title for the passage?

A. Please stop tipping. B. My experiences in china

C. There is no tipping in china D. Tipping in different countries.
