【題目】

The coast redwood is the unchallenged tallest of North American's trees. But do you know it grows from a seed (種子) that is smaller than a pea?

What's special about redwoods?

Redwoods are special for a couple of reasons. The first is their size. Imagine standing next to a tree which is the height of a 30-floor building. The second is their age. Redwoods usually grows to about 600 years old. Some are even more than 2000 years old.

Where do redwoods grow?

To find a coast redwood, you'll have to go to Oregon or California. The land along the west coast, about 450 miles long and up to 35 miles wide, is home to the redwoods. Coast redwoods do not grow anywhere else in the world.

Why do redwoods grow there?

The coast of the Pacific Ocean provides a special environment for the redwoods. Cool, wet air comes from the ocean and keeps the trees wet all year. That is important because most of the rain falls between October and May. During the dry summer months, the trees depend on the wet air over the coast.

How do redwoods survive?

Redwoods have a couple of protection systems(系統(tǒng)). The skin of an adult redwood tree can grow to as thick as 12 inches. The thick covering protects the lower part of the tree from fire damage. Also, most of a redwood's branches and leaves are high up on the tree. This keeps them safe from forest fires. Redwoods are safe from insect damage because the wood has a bitter-tasting chemical.

What should I do?

If you ever get a chance, visit a redwood forest. Look among the tree trunks and imagine who might have camped there a thousand years ago. Look upward and just imagine how high the trees might grow if we protect them.

C.South American coast

D.anywhere in the world

A.Rain fall.B.Sea water.C.Wet air.D.Ocean life.

3Redwoods are safe from forest fires because of

The Colosseum is an ancient stadium in the center of Rome. It is the largest of its kind. It is very old. They started building it in the year 70. It took ten years to build. It is still around today.

The Colosseum has been used in many ways. In ancient Rome, men fought each other in it. They fought against lions, tigers, and bears. It was terrible. But most of the people loved it. As many as 80,000 Romans would pack inside to watch. These gruesome events went on until 523.

The Colosseum has been damaged many times over the years. It was struck by lightning in the year 217. This started a fire. Much of the Colosseum is made of stone. The worst damage happened in 1349. A mighty earthquake shook Rome and the Colosseum. The south side of the building collapsed ( 坍塌). Pieces of the arena ( 場(chǎng)地) were all over the ground. It was a cold night. There was hardly anyone out. But I knew she would stay at the same place and I would find her easily.

There she was, squatted(蹲著)against a fence near the post office. She was dressed as she always was.

I drove my car over to herput down the window and said,“I've brought you some food.

Would you like some turkey and apple pie?”

However, the old woman didn't seem to be very excited about this. She looked at me and said quite clearly,"Ohthank you very much, but someone gave me food earlier and I'm quite full now. Why don't you take it to someone else who needs it?"
