Do you believe there are aliens (外星人)? Well, make a phone call and you will know. A group of
Americans can help. They made a device (裝置) to "talk" to aliens. If you want to talk to an alien, you only
need to visit www. Talk To Aliens. com, call 1 - 900 - 226 - 0300 and say, "Hello aliens, this is Earth calling.
Can you hear me?" You can say anything you want.
But now, they only take phone calls from people in the US. The call is $3. 99 every minute. After the
hotline began in February, www. Talk To Aliens. com has got hundreds of calls. There is one call every three
minutes. They are also trying to send people's e-mails, photos and videos into space.

There are about 80.000.000 mines under the ground in more than 60 countries. It is difficult and dangerous
to clear these mines. About 50 people including many children were killed or hurt each day. In 2003, APOPO,
a Duch research company that trains the animals, came up with the idea of using rats to search for the mines.
The animal trainers found that a kind of rats from Africa were clever and had a sharp sense of smell. The
rats were about 75 cm long and weighted about 1.35 kg. light enough to run across a minefield without setting
off the mines.
In January 2004, the APOPO startec this preject. First, the trainers let the 4-week-old baby rats get familier
with humans. A few weeks later, the rats were no longer afraid of people and the things around them. Then they
were trained to connect a click sound with food. After the rats had learned that, the trainers then taught them to
tell the different between the smell of mines and other smells. When the rats could do it, the click was sounded
and they were given a bit of bananas. The method was called clicker training. "The training isn't easy." said the
trainer Adulish Mebomvu. "You have to be patient.Sometimes I get angry, but then again.I tell myself these are
animals."
After nine months' training, the rats were taken to 4 minefield. They ran across the minefield, stopped, sat
and searched the ground to tell the deminers that they smelt out a mine. Then the mine was cleared. It had taken
two deminers a day to clear a 200 m2 minefield. But with the help of two rats they could finish it in two hours.
The rats and the deminers saved thousands of lives. "The rats did this job much better than we expected. So
far they have helpde to make almost 2.000.000 m2 of land safe. They are heroes." said Bart Woetjcds, the head

Every 30 seconds there is an earthquake. But don't worry because most are so weak that they cannot be
felt. Only a few big ones hurt people.
Many earthquakes happened in China, such as the big one is Sichuan last year. Thousands of people died
in it. So it's important to know what to do when one hits. Here are some tips on how to stay safely in an
earthquake.
If you are indoors during an earthquake, hide under a desk. Stay away from windows and anything that
could fall on you.
If you are outdoors, move to a clear place. Try to be away from trees, signs, buildings and streetlights.
These could fall on you.
If you are in a shop and far from the door, don't try to run to outside and rush for exits (出口). Everyone
will be doing that and you'll find it hard getting out. Don't get into a lift during an earthquake. Just hide under
some strong covers near you.
When an earthquake has ended, be careful because after-shocks may still happen. These are just as
dangerous as the earthquake itself. So stay under the desk until you make sure it's safe to get up.
If you are at home and you smell gas, open the windows and get out of the building as quickly as you can.
A gas line in your house may be broken. This could be very dangerous.

Many people have talked about whether or not computing machines can think. Can they or can't they?
Almost certainly, a machine can do any work in thinking that a person can do-if the correct way for doing
the thinking work can be told exactly. Besides, many programs have been made to direct machines so that
they work in very clever ways. Machines have been taught to play chess and to leam from what happens in
the games so as to make their play better and better. Machines can beat many persons who play chess.
Machines can translate from one language to another. They can prove statements in geometry (幾何) as
taught in school. Machines can notice printed marks on paper, so that a person is no longer needed to look
at the marks.
Computers can be used in many ways, such as business, science, industry, and govemment. Computers
study oil-field examinations made by airplanes; they keep record of oil sales; they study the working condition
of the machines; they help in plan- ning and producing oil; and much more. If people cannot tell exactly the
correct way to do certain work in thinking, it is still a question how much of this work a machine can do.
Suppose a person is "teaching" the machine and telling the machine "yes" when the machine is right, and "no"
when the machine is wrong. Then the machine can keep on searching among possible ways for solving
a problem-until the machine can do as well as the person, and per haps much better.
But, what is thinking? People can agree about much that is thinking, and much that is not thinking; but they
can't reach agreement because the word "think" is not a scientific word with an exact meaning. A lot of the
discussion is wasted breath because the persons are using different meanings of the word "think".
People, however, have only had experience with machines that appear to think since 1944.
It would be too early to say that after the next 200 years, machines will not be thinking. And to consider
that machines can think gives people a big push to give to machines more and more work in thinking.
1. The underlined part in paragraph three is about computers used in ________.
A. Education.
B. Govemment.
C. Sports.
D. Industry.
2. What does "this work" mean in paragraph four?
A. Thinking.
B. Teaching.
C. Searching.
D. Telling.
3. What is the main idea of paragraph five?
A. There is much to say about thinking.
B. People discuss a lot about thinking.
C. There is no answer to what thinking is.
D. People already know what thinking is.
4. What does the writer want to say in the passage?
A. A machine will do any work in thinking like a human being.
B. A machine can do better translation than human beings.
C. A machine won't be able to beat every chess player.
D. A machine will be able to make plan programs.
5. Which probably is the best title for the passage?
A. What Is Thinking?
B. Can Machines Think?
C. Can Machines Be Taught to Think?
D. Can Machines Beat All Checkers Players?

After spending years searching for a planet with life, scientists may have found one. In September 2010,
a team of US scientists discovered an Earth-sized planet called Gliese 581g. It has a surface temperature
neither too hot nor too cold for liquid (液態(tài)) water. Scientists think there is a chance that the planet could
have life.
The planet Gliese 581g goes around a star called Gliese 581, which is about 20 light-years from Earth.
That is about 194 trillion (萬(wàn)億) kilometres-500 million times farther away from us than the moon.
A spacecraft traveling at a one-tenth of the speed of light would reach Gliese 581g within about 220 years.
A human can't live that long, but robotic explorers could make the job easier. However, our fastest spacecraft
don't come anywhere near that one-tenth light-speed mark.
At present, scientists don't know what the surface might be like on Gliese 581g. What they know is that
the planet is at the sight distance from its star to have liquid water. It's also at the right distance to have an
atmosphere that could protect the water if it is on the surface.
Although spacecraft won't be getting there anytime soon, one way to look for life on Gliese 581g is to
turn our radio telescopes (望遠(yuǎn)鏡) towards the planet and search for radiation (放射). By studying the
radiation, scientists would find out about the chemicals (化學(xué)物質(zhì)) around the planet and discover it Gliese
581g has an atmosphere. If it has one, studying the atmosphere would give us a good idea if the planet has
life or not. But it'll probably be many years before we can do this properly.
People have been arguing about whether there is alien life on Gliese 581g. Any discussion about alien life
is just guessing at this point, according to its discoverers.
1. What did scientists find in September 2010?
A. A planet with water.
B. A planet similar to the earth.
C. A planet without life.
D. A planet near the earth.
2. According to the article, Gliese 581g ________.
A. is at the right distance from its star
B. moves around the earth
C. is as far away from us as the moon
D. can be reached in about 220 years
3. Paragraph 5 is mainly about ________.
A. the possibility of living on Gliese 581g
B. the kinds of chemicals around Gliese 581g
C. the way of looking for life on Gliese 581g
D. the aim of studying the radiation on Gliese 581g
4. Which of the following is the best title for the passage above?
A. Gliese 581g, a Likely Living Planet.
B. Gliese 581g, a Likely Living Planet.
C. Gliese 581g and Its Star.
D. Gliese 581g and Radiation.
