In the depths of my memory, many things I did with my father still live. I call these things  1 and love.
I don’t remember my father ever getting into a swimming pool. But he did  2 the water. Any kind of ride seemed to give him pleasure.  4 he loved to fish; sometimes he took me along.
But I never really liked being on the water, the way my father did. I liked being  5 the water, moving through it, having it all around me. I was not a strong  6 , or one who learned to swim early, for I had my . But I loved being in the swimming pool close to my father’s office and  8 those summer days with my father, who  9 come by on a break. I needed him to see what I could do. My father would stand there in his suit, the  0 person not in swimsuit.
After swimming, I would go  11 his office and sit on the wooden chair in front of his big desk, where he let me  12 anything I found in his top desk drawer. Sometimes, if I was left alone at his desk while he worked in the lab, an assistant or a student might come in and tell me perhaps I shouldn’t be playing with his 13 . But my father always showed up and said easily, “Oh, no, it’s fine.” Sometimes he handed me coins and told me to get  14 an ice cream…
A poet once said, “We look at life once, in childhood; the rest is memory.” And I think it is not only what we “l(fā)ook at once, in childhood” that determines our memories, but  15 , in that childhood, look at us.

Three men traveling on a train began a conversition about the world's greatest wonders.
“ In my opinion,” the first man said, “ the Egyptian pyramids are the world’s greatest wonder. Although they were built thousands of years ago, they are still standing. And remember: the people who built them had only simple tools. They didn’t have the kind of machinery that builders and engineers have today.
“ I agree that the Egyptian pyramids are wonderful,” the second man said, “ But I don’t think they’re the greatest wonder. I believe computers are more wonderful than the pyramids. They have taken people to the moon and brought them back safely. They carry out mathematical calculations in seconds that would take a person a hundred years to do.”
He turned to the third man and asked, “ What do you think is the greatest wonder in the world?”
The third man thought for a long time, then he said, “ Well, I agree that the pyramids are wonderful, and I agree that computers are wonderful, too. However, in my opinion, the most wonderful thing in the world is the thermos(保溫瓶).”
And he took a thermos out of his bag and held it up.
The other two men were very surprised. “ A thermos?” they exclaimed(大聲說), “ But that’s a simple thing.”
“ Oh, no, it’s not,” the third man said, “ in the winter you put in a hot drink and it stays hot, in the summer you put in a cold drink and it stays cold. How does the thermos know whether it is winter or summer?”
