Some changes have taken place in the English exam this year. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

【答案】Some changes have taken place in the English exam this year. I prefer the changes because they concentrate on improving our reading skills. While at the same time, it’s a bit difficult than before.

I used to learn English by memorizing new words and doing a lot of exercises. Listening to the teachers and taking notes carefully in class were my secrets, too. With the changes in English papers this year, I will do more reading to enlarge my vocabulary, think deeper to develop my ways of thinking so that I can have a better understanding of the English language. What’s more, I am going to learn more about English culture through English songs and movies.

I will be fully prepared for the changes and accept the challenge.

【題目】 Giving up smoking is not only good for your heart and lungs (), it’s also good for your memory, according to a study by Northumbria University, Newcastle, UK. The research was published in the online edition (版本) of Drug and Alcohol Dependence. It shows that stopping smoking can strengthen someone’s ability to remember everyday things, according to Sciencedaily.com.

The research looked at three groups of people―27 smokers, 18 ex-smokers (已戒煙者) and 24 people who had never smoked. They were all asked to remember to do a series of tasks in 15 different locations on a university campus. For example, they had to check for text messages on their cell phones when they were getting close to the library, or remember to ask about the cost of membership when they arrived at the sports center.

The study found that smokers could remember just 59 percent of the tasks; people who used to smoke but had now given up remembered 74 percent; and those who had never smoked managed to remember 81 percent of the tasks.

Tom Heffernan, PhD, from the Drug and Alcohol Research Group at Northumbria University said:

Given that there are up to 10 million smokers in the UK and as many as 45 million in the US, it’s important to understand the effects smoking has on everyday cognitive function (認知能力).

The team is now planning to research how second-hand smoke can affect health and everyday memory.

【題目】 English is the most widely used language in the history of our planet. One in every seven human beings can speak it. More than half of the world’s books and three quarters of international mail are in English. Of all languages, English has the largest vocabulary — perhaps as many as two million words.

However, let’s face it: English is a crazy language. There is no egg in an eggplant, neither pine nor apple in a pineapple and no ham in a hamburger. Sweet-meats are candy, while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat.

We take English for granted. But when we explore its paradoxes (探討它的矛盾), we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, public bathrooms have no baths in them.

And why is it that a writer writes, but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce, and hammers don’t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, shouldn’t the plural of booth be beeth? One goose, two geese — so one moose, two meese?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the next?

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects (反映) the creativity of human beings. That’s why, when stars are out, they are visible (能看見的); but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it; but when I wind up this essay, I end it.

1According to the passage ________.

A.boxing rings should be roundB.pineapples are the apples on the pine tree

C.there should be egg in an eggplantD.sweet-meats and sweetbreads are different things

2Which of the following is the correct plural (復數(shù)形式) form?

A.Beeth.B.Meese.C.Geese.D.Tooth.

3Which of the following includes two items which have the similar meaning?

A.Quite a lot and quite a few.B.Overlook and oversee.

C.A wise man and a wise guy.D.Hot as hell and cold as hell.

4Through the many paradoxes in the English language, the writer wants to show that human beings are ________.

A.lazyB.crazyC.cleverD.stupid
