Skin-diving(潛水) is a new sport today. This sport takes you to a wonderful new world. It’s like a visit to the moon! When you’re under the water, it’s easy for you to climb big rocks(巖石) because you aren’t heavy any more.

Everything is blue and green under the water. During the day, there’s enough light(光). When fish swim nearby, you can catch them with your hands.

When you have tanks of air(氧氣罐) on your back, you can stay in deep water for a long time. But you must be careful, when you dive in deep water.

How many things can you see in the night sky? A lot! On a clear night you can see the moon, some planets, and thousands of sparking stars.

You can see even more with a telescope. You might see that many stars look larger than others. You might see that some stars that look white are really red or blue. With bigger and bigger telescopes you can see more and more objects in the sky. And you can see those objects in more and more detail.

But scientists believe there are some things in the sky that we will never see. We won’t see them with the biggest telescope in the world, on the clearest night of the year. That’s because they’re invisible. They’re the mysterious dead stars called black holes.

You might find it hard to imagine that stars die. After all, our sun is a star. Year after year we see it up in the sky, burning brightly and giving us heat and light. The Sun certainly doesn’t seem to be getting old or weak. But stars do burn out and die after billions of years.

As a star’s gases burn, they give off light and heat. But when the gases run out, the star stops burning and begins to die.

So next time you look up at the night sky, remember: there’s more in the sky than we can see!

1.On a clear night we might see things except______.

A.the moon         B.some planets       C.sparkling stars      D.the sun

2.How can we see even more in the sky?

A.By using a telescope

B.By using a microscope

C.By climbing up to the top of a mountain

D.By going outside on a clear night.

3.What does the underlined word”invisible”mean in Chinese?

A.看不見的         B.聽不見的          C.摸不著的         D.無形的

4.When a star’s gases_______,the star begins to die.

A.burn             B.run out           C.give off heat       D.get weak

5.Which of the following is NOT TRUE according to the passage?

A.We might see that many stars look larger than others with a telescope

B.We might see that some stars that look white are really red and blue with a telescope.

C.We can see some objects in more and more detail with bigger and bigger telescopes.

Our nearest neighbor is the moon. In the sky,  the moon and the sun seem to be of the same size because the moon is much nearer.

The moon makes the tides—the changes in the level of the sea. The moon and the sun together pull the sea. In some parts of the world,  the difference between * high tide' (when the sea is very near to the land) and ' low tide' (when the sea is far away from the land) is very big. This is very important for ships.

The moon is very different from the Earth. Gravity on the moon is six times weaker than that on the Earth. There isn't any air. During the day,  it is very,  very hot but at night it is very,  very cold. Nothing can live on the moon.

If the moon goes between the Earth and the sun,  we have an eclipse of the sun(日食) . The moon stops the light from the sun and we have night in the day.

If the Earth goes between the moon and the sun,  we have an eclipse of the moon. The moon goes into the shadow( 影) of the Earth and it disappears for a few minutes.

1. The sun to the Earth is _________times farther than the moon to the Earth.

A. nearly 200         B. less than 300      C. nearly 400         D. more than 400

A. The Earth goes between the moon and the sun.

B. The moon goes into the shadow of the sun.

C. The moon goes into the shadow of its own.

c. The changes in the level of the sea are called tides.

d. The moon itself pulls the sea and makes the tides.

e. When the sea is near to the land,  a high tide may happen.
