【題目】 Americans were shocked to discover that the national bird was in danger of disappearing from the skies forever. Studies in 1970 showed only about 1,000, or fewer, bald eagles(禿鷹) in the country.

The major cause of the problem was people. The spread of civilization(文明) destroyed many of the eagles' feeding and nesting areas. And the eagles were being affected by D-D-T and other insect poisons. The poisons were in the animals the eagles ate. They reduced the eagles' ability(能力) to use calcium(). This made the outside of the eagles' eggs very thin. Often, the eggs broke before baby birds were developed.

In 1972, the U. S. government banned(禁止) D-D-T. People also became interested in protecting places where eagles live. And stronger efforts were made to carry out laws protecting the birds. Scientists began a program that placed baby bald eagles which were born under human care, into nests of wild bald eagles. Often, the wild birds accepted the babies.

These efforts appear to have been successful in saving the American bald eagles. Today the number of the bald eagles has increased to more than 11, 000.

A. willing to raise the baby eagles hatched(孵出)by man

B. shocked they were in danger of disappearing

C. satisfied with D-D-T and other insect poisons.

【題目】 For many American university students, the weeklong spring break holiday means an endless party on a sunny beach. In Panama City Beach, Florida, a city with a population of around 36,000, more than half a million university students arrive during the month of March to play and party, making it hit number one spring break place in the United Stated.

A weeklong party is not everyone, however, and a growing number of American university students have found a way to make spring break matter. For them, joining or leading a group of volunteers to help solve problems such as homelessness or pollution makes spring break a special learning experience that university students can feel good about.

During one spring break week, students from James Madison University in Virginal took part in 15"spring break" trips to nearby states, three others to more distant parts of the United States, and five international trips. One group of JMU students traveled to Bogalusa, Louisiana, to help rebuild homes damaged by Hurricane(颶風(fēng)) Katrina. Another group traveled to Mississippi to organize creative activities for children living in a homeless shelter. One group of students did go to Florida, but not to lie on the sand. They performed some tiring work such as keeping hiking roads in good condition and helping protect the native Florida plants.

Students who take part in spring break projects find them very rewarding(值得的). While most university students have to get their degrees before they can start helping people, student volunteers are able to help people right now. On the other hand, the buildings or rooms where they live or stay are far from attractive(迷人的). Students often sleep on the floor of a school or church. But they only pay around $250 for meals and transportation, which is much less than some of their friends spend traveling to more traditional spring break hot places.

Spring break projects appear to be growing in popularity at universities across the United States. Some students take the opportunity to meet new friends. Others want to exercise their beliefs to make the world a better place. Whatever their reasons, these students have discovered something that give them rich rewards along with a break from school work.

A.around 36,000B.over 1,000,000C.about 50,000D.over 500,000

2What does the underlined word “matter”in the second paragraph mean?

A.a serious problemB.a subject or a situation

3Which of the following is mentioned as a reason for joining in spring break trips?

A.a personal opinion that people must help others

B.a wish to travel to interesting places

C.a wish to get away from family and friends

D.a hope to make more money

4What is the best title for the article?

A.Different Activities for University Students
