【題目】 New rules and behavior standards (行為規(guī)范) for middle school students came out. Who are the most excellent students? Middle schools use a new way to decide that. The best students won't only have good grades. They will also be the kids who don't dye () their hair, smoke or drink. The following are some of the new rules.

Tell the truth. Have you ever copied others' work during an exam? Don't do it again. That's not what an honest student should do. If you played computer games for two hours in your room, don't tell your parents you were doing your homework.

Do more at school. Good students love animals and care about others. April is Bird-Loving Month in China. Is your school doing anything to celebrate it? You should join! That way, you can learn more about animals and learn how to protect them. And when your classmates are in trouble, remember to give them a hand. A friend in need is a friend indeed.

Use the Internet carefully. Try to keep away from web pages that are bad for you. Find good websites and use them for homework.

Be open to new ideas. Have you ever thought that people could live on the moon? Maybe you can discover a new planet someday. Don't look down on new ideas. You should welcome them because new ideas can make life better.

【題目】 Duncan Smith and Katie Schmidt both always wanted to be firefighters. Now, the two 16-year-olds have started their training at Wellington High School Fire Science Academy in the US.

At the Fire Science Academy, students learn how fire behaves, how to use firefighting tools, how to save people, and of course, how to put out a fire.

The academy recently received a fire truck that will help students become familiar with the trucks used by real firefighters, according to Mark Davis, a teacher at the academy.

“It’s an important part of the program,” Davis said. “It allows our students to understand the everyday tools used in the fire service. It also gives them a sense of pride to enter into public service.” The fire truck will also help students practice before taking the state firefighter test, Davis said.

Schmidt said she was interested in the opportunities the academy presented.“It was my decision to go into this program,” she said. “My dad has been in this service for almost 25 years and I wanted to follow in his footsteps and learn and understand what he goes through in his day-to-day life.”

“The academy is strict and students have to be comfortable with standing to attention for most of the day,” Davis said. “I like the discipline(紀(jì)律) aspect because I feel like a lot of high school students sometimes go the wrong way, and with this, it’s not possible,” Schmidt said.

【題目】 Though times have changed, falling asleep in class is still quite common among teenagers.

Why do students sometimes fall asleep in class? An obvious(顯而易見(jiàn)的) reason is lack(缺少) of sleep. However, there are also causes for getting too little sleep.

Homework is a daily meal for most students, one that can take three to four hours per night. A teenager who wants to be able to take part in any activity besides homework must stay up late to fit everything in. Club activities, sports, computer-game playing, and TV viewing, for example, all lead to teens having less time for both homework and sleep. Sometimes teens lack sleep because of after-school jobs that are taken on to earn extra money for college, family cost, or simply for clothes.

Physical problems are another reason that can cause students to fall asleep in class. For example, insomnia(失眠), which may keep a student up at night, causing exhaustion(疲憊不堪) during class hours, is a serious problem that may require medical attention. Medical research also supports the idea that each person has a body clock that helps to decide his or her sleep pattern. Unluckily, these body clocks do not always work according to school timetables.

The effects of falling asleep in class can be quite serious. First of all, sleeping in class is not a good way to show your respect to teachers. In addition, it is highly possible that other students may make jokes about those who sleep in class. However, the most harmful effect of sleeping in class is missing important points. In the long run, sleepers may end up with failing classes.

Since teens are probably not going to deal with the problem, falling asleep in class will probably remain an all-too-common situation. It will continue until more teens find a way to balance their personal and social lives with school and work, while still finding enough time to sleep.
