【題目】 When our son Peter was twelve, the new bicycle he had received was stolen. Owning a bicycle was big fun to our children when they were little. They spent hours and hours, day after day, on their bicycles, riding up and together as a family a lot. Bicycling was a great way to get the kids out of the house and into the fresh air without spending the money.

When Peter and his sister went outside for a morning ride, he discovered that his bicycle had been stolen from our backyard. He couldn't believe that someone would do this.

He got a large piece of cardboard, painted a sign begging for the bicycle to be returned, and tied the sign to the letterbox. The following morning, when I went out to collect the mail, I found a white envelope with the magical words, "Buy yourself a new bicycle". There was a $ 100 banknote inside.

We were very touched that someone had the heart to do this. We'd never been able to thank the person but we guessed that it may have been one of our wonderful neighbors. Peter painted a big "Thank you!" on the sign and we left it outside for a couple of weeks afterwards, hoping the kind stranger would drive down our street and see it.

Peter was able to own a new bicycle again. As the years went on, the bicycle became older but remained just as important as before. Now Peter is 25.

All these years later we are still thankful for the stranger's kindness. We were a young family with three little children and it meant a lot to us. We still talk about it and, even now, wonder who the kind stranger was.

【題目】 Air pollution is a big problem for cities. Many people are dying from it. But how can we tell the air quality(質(zhì)量) is good or bad?

Joris Lam has invented a birdhouse that can tell us about the air quality. On a tree next to a canal (運河) in Amsterdam, a small birdhouse will shine bright green when the air is clean. If you are standing near the birdhouse, it will also give you a free Wi-Fi connection. So Joris’s birdhouse is called TreeWifi. It can be put on a tree around your house to test the air quality. People can see a screen with information about local air quality and how to improve it. TreeWifi is a simple way for people to know about the air pollution around them. If the birdhouse doesn't shine, people will care more about the environment. It tells them to change their lifestyles. For example, to protect the air, they can ride bikes instead of driving cars.

Joris and his team are trying to make some changes to the birdhouse. In the future, the heat of its green light will be used to keep birds warm in winter.

【題目】 Coffee is a necessary part of Italian culture and since arriving here over six months ago, I have definitely drunk a lot of it!

Of course, coffee is also very popular in the UK, but coffee culture in Italy is a completely different story. In Italy, when you order a coffee in a cafe or a bar, you are presented with a tiny, bitter espresso(蒸餾咖啡). This is “normal coffee” for Italians and they are not so interested in the huge coffees that we drink in the UK. In addition, while takeaway coffee is extremely popular among Englishmen, it is not very common at all in Italy, especially in nontouristy areas. Generally, Italians prefer to drink their tiny coffees while standing at the bar and, for many, this short break is an important part of their day.

Typically, breakfast at a bar in Italy includes a coffee and a pastry(油酥糕點). I have been spoiled for choice with lovely cafes in the Italian town I'm living in. These cafes sell a series of mouthwatering pastries—either plain or filled with cream, chocolate, jam or Nutella—as well as delicious coffee. Cappuccinos are very popular at breakfast time and, for me, a creamy cappuccino and a pastry is the perfect way to start the day. I think it's a nice way to head to bar to buy a coffee and a pastry for breakfast before working and it's relaxing to take more time to enjoy such breakfast at the weekend.

Finally, I have found that coffee in Italy is so much cheaper than coffee in the UK. Of course, this means that in Italy, it is possible to go out for coffee regularly without breaking the bank.

1Which of the following do Italians like better?

A.Takeaway coffees.

B.Huge coffees.

C.Creamy coffees.

D.Tiny, bitter coffees.

2What does the word “they” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A.Italians.B.Britons.

C.Coffees.D.Cafes.

3What does the writer usually do when in Italy?

A.Sell tiny coffees to Italians.

B.Travel in touristy areas.

C.Enjoy a coffee with a pastry.

D.Break the bank regularly.

4Why can the writer often go out for coffee without breaking the bank in Italy?

A.Because coffee is a part of Italian culture.

B.Because there are so many cafes or bars.

C.Because Italian pastries are very delicious.

D.Because Italian coffee is very cheap.

【題目】Do You Go To Sleep In Class?

The “Acronym”, our student newspaper, reports that most students go to sleep at 1: 30 a. m. Even if that’s an exaggeration(夸張), it’s too close to the truth. Scientists say teenagers should sleep nine hours each night. But that’s hard to do.

Some even “pull all-nighters”. These are lazy students who have homework due to(到期) the next day that they haven’t done. In the morning they don’t look healthy and you can tell who has been doing it.

One of my classmates did a survey(調(diào)查) on the problem. She found that most kids pull all-nighters to finish homework, but some do it for other reasons, such as playing computer games!

Maybe our lack of sleep is because of laziness — I think I’m a lazy student — or maybe it’s because we have too much to do in American high schools.

I usually go to bed around midnight. If I stayed up past 1: 30 a. m., I wouldn’t get any work done. I’d be falling asleep at my computer. My classes begin at 7:30 a.m. I’m partly awake in my first class. By the second, I’m slightly tired and sleepy. By my third class, I’m sleepy. By midday I’m finally wide-awake. But by 3: 00 p. m., I’m slowing down again.

Most American high schools seem to have such a problem.

High school classes start at 7: 30 a. m., so students have to wake up one and a half hours before that to get ready and catch the bus. It’s believed that lack of sleep can do harm to both grades and health.

Some schools are paying attention. Classes in those schools start at 8:30 a. m.

1What’s the problem talked about in the passage?

A.Many kids have too much homework to do.

B.Many teenagers don’t have enough sleep.

C.Many children are crazy about playing computer games.

D.Many kids are too lazy to finish their homework on time.

2The underlined expression “pull all-nighters” most probably means ________.

A.開夜車B.上夜班C.睡懶覺D.補作業(yè)

3Which of the following is NOT a reason mentioned in the passage?

A.Laziness.B.Homework.C.Housework.D.Computer games.

4What’s the idea suggested at the end of the passage?

A.Later start of classes.B.Less homework.

C.Going to bed early.D.Eating healthy food.
