What is your favourite colour? Do you like yellow, orange or red? If you do, you must be optimist (樂(lè)觀
者), a leader or an active person who enjoys life. Do you prefer grey and blue?
Then you are probably quiet, shy and you'd rather follow than lead. You seem to be a pessimist (悲觀者).
Colours influence our moods, there is no doubt about it. A yellow room makes most people feel more
cheerful and warmer than a dark green one. It seems that a red dress brings warmth and cheer. On the other
hand, black is depressing (令人壓抑的). A black bridge over the River Thames, near London, used to be the
scene of more suicides (自殺) than other bridges in the area until it was painted green. The number of suicide
attempts (企圖) fell sharply at once, perhaps it would have fallen even more if the bridge had been done in pink
or baby blue. Light and bright colours make people not only happier but also more active. It is true fact that
factory workers work better, harder and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather
than black or dark green.
1. If you are an optimist, you like the colours except _____.
A. yellow
B. orange
C. grey
D. red
2. If you prefer grey and blue, then you are probably except _____.
A. quiet
B. shy
C. a pessimist (悲觀者)
D. an optimist (樂(lè)觀者)
3. _____ room makes most people feel more cheerful and warmer than a dark green one.
A. A yellow

Do you know kind words and light music (輕音樂(lè)) have something to do with plants?
Many people talk to their plants. Many people play music to their plants. And many people try very hard
to protect (保護(hù)) their plants from loud noises, strong lights, and unpleasant (討厭的) smells (氣味).
That's not all. Some people are very careful (小心的) about what they say or do in front of plants. They
won't talk about unpleasant things. They won't beat (拍打) a fly (蒼蠅) near their plants.
Why? Those people are afraid that they may hurt their plants' feelings.
Can you hurt a plant's feelings? Do plants have feelings? Professor Backster thinks so. Many pupils think
so. Even a few scientists think that plants have feelings.
But most scientists (科學(xué)家) don't agree (同意). They don't think that plants can be happy, worried,
angry, loving or frightened (害怕). They don't believe that a plant's feeling can be hurt.
Who is right? Then along came the experiments (實(shí)驗(yàn)) of professor Backster. From his experiments,
Backster decided that plants have feelings. He said that, like people, plants need love and kindness (親切).
They can feel worried and happy.
Two years later, in l 968. Baekster wrote about his experiments in a magazine (雜志). And much of the
