China will cut the number of climbers trying to climb Mount Qomolangma from the north this year as part of plans for the clean-up on the world's highest mountains. The clean-up activity will include moving away the bodies of climbers who died at more than 8,000 metres up the mountain.

The total number of climbers trying to reach the top of the world's highest mountain from the north will be controlled to less than 300. The climbing season will be controlled to spring.

Parts of Qomolangma are in China and Nepal (尼泊爾). Each year, around 60,000 climbers and guides visit the Chinese north side of the mountain, but few actually try to climb it. China has set up stations to sort (分類), recycle and break down rubbish from the mountain, which includes cans, plastic bags, tents and oxygen tanks (氧氣瓶).

On the Nepalese side, mountaineering trip organizers have begun sending huge rubbish bags to climbers during the spring climbing season. They should collect rubbish that then can be carried by helicopters back to the base camp.

Every year there are many victims on Qomolangma often in the "death area" above 8,000 metres, where the air is the thinnest. In 2017, 648 people reached the top of Qomolangma. Six people have died on the mountain that year, one of whom on the north side.

Qomolangma has become the world's highest rubbish dump (垃圾場). Meanwhile, melting (融化) ice caused by global warming is exposing (暴露) rubbish that has been left on the mountain since Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay made the first successful climbing 67 years ago.

B.In China, people use helicopters to take the rubbish back to the base camp.

C.China has set up stations to deal with rubbish that is left on the mountain.

D.On the Nepalese side, climbers should take rubbish back to the base camp.

4What does the underlined word "victims" mean?

A.Persons who enjoy climbing.B.Persons who work hard.

C.Persons who help climbers.D.Persons who have experienced death.

5What can we mainly learn from the last paragraph?

A.The weather in the world is getting warmer.

根據(jù)“The clean-up …up the mountain.”

根據(jù)第二段“The climbing season will be controlled to spring.” 故選A。

根據(jù)“Each year… north side of the mountain”可知,60,000個(gè)人中有登山者也有向?qū)В皇菃我坏闹挥械巧秸撸?/span>A錯(cuò)誤;根據(jù)“China has set up stations to sort (分類), recycle and break down rubbish from the mountain,”可知,中國建立垃圾分類站來回收和分解山上的垃圾,不是用直升飛機(jī)來清理垃圾,B錯(cuò)誤,由此可知C正確;根據(jù)“They should collect rubbish that then can be carried by helicopters back to the base camp.”

根據(jù)后文“in the "death area" above 8,000 metres”在海拔8,000米的死亡區(qū),可知此處的人應(yīng)該是罹難者,victim:罹難者,受害者;Persons who enjoy climbing享受登山的人;Persons who work hard努力工作的人;Persons who help climbers幫助登山者的人;Persons who have experienced death.

本文主要在講珠峰攀登者的垃圾清理問題,結(jié)合最后一段“Qomolangma has become the world's highest rubbish dump ”可知珠峰面臨著嚴(yán)重的垃圾問題。故選D。

Deep in the forest of southeastern Mexico, scientists found a surprise. They found an ancient pyramid (金字塔). There were colorful murals in it. A mural is a painting on a wall. Those murals are helping scientists unlock a mystery (奧秘) about people who lived in ancient times.

The murals are about 1,350 years old. That's more than five times older than the United States. Scientists say the paintings belonged to the Mayas. That was a group of Native American people.

Scientists are excited about the discover because they don't know much about the Mayas daily life, explains Michael Coe, an expert on the Mayas. The paintings show how the Mayas worked, shopped and had meals.

"Mostly we get the murals that show gods and kings, never anything about the daily life, " Coe said. So far, scientists have found more than 30 murals in the pyramid. They are not sure why the Mayas created them. The experts hope to learn more as they continue their search. "We never had anything like this before," said Coe. "These are really special murals."

Scientists learned a lot about the Mayas from the murals. The Mayas were known for more than paintings. Now the murals tell us some fun facts about the Mayan way of life.

The Mayas lived in what is now Central and North America. Today the area includes parts of Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras.

Smart Starts

The Mayas invented a type of Math. They also created a type of writing that used symbols or pictures. Mayas used bark (樹皮) to make books.
