Why do plants grow in some places and not in others? Why does some land have so much growing on it,
while other land has almost no plants growing on it at all?
To grow, plants need several things. One is warmth. In very cold places almost nothing grows. Plants also
need water. In very dry parts of the Earth only a few unusual plants can grow. That's why dry deserts
everywhere are almost not covered by trees or grass.
Plants must also have a place in which to put down their roots and grow. They find it difficult to grow
on hard land. The town is built on hard land. The plants here have only the soil found between the cracks of
the stones to grow in. Another thing plants must have before they can grow is food.
What will happen if we try to make things grow on the sandy beach? A few plants, such as beach grass,
will grow in sand, but most plants won't. Even if the weather is warm enough and we water the plants each
day, many of them will die because the sand on this beach has almost no food for plants.
1. According to the passage, plants need ______ things to grow well.
A. two
B. three
C. four
D. five
2. What does the underlined word "cracks" mean in the text?

D. 底部
3. From the passage, we can know it is for plants to grow in dry places.
A. easy
B. difficult
C. impossible

4. The reason why most plants can't grow on the sandy beach is that _______.
A. there isn't enough sunlight
B. there is too much water
C. it is too crowded there
D. it has little food for plants

A mobile phone is in fact a small radio. A radio sends a person's voice over a long way to another radio.
A voice that is sent by radio is called a signal. A radio signal travels very quickly.
Only a few years ago, mobile phones were very large. They needed large batteries (電池). They had to
be powerful to send their signal to faraway places. This was because most cities had only one antenna tower
for mobile phones.
Today's mobile phones are small and easy to use. Now most cities have a lot of antenna towers, not just

Have you ever heard an echo of your voice?
An echo is a reflected (反射) sound. Stand in a very large, empty hall with nothing on the walls. Then
shout. The sounds you make will hit the walls and come back to you. The walls reflect the sounds. These
reflected sounds are called "echoes".
We can use reflected sound to make sound travel farther. Hold a watch about fifty centimeters from your
ear. You cannot hear it. The sound of the watch travels a short way in all directions. lt does not travel as far
as your ear. You can make it travel to your ear by using a roll of cardboard (紙板筒).
Make the roll of cardboard about fifty centimeters long. Put one end over your ear and hold the watch at
the other. Now you can hear the watch because the sound has not gone in all directions. lt is reflected down
the roll to your ear.
A megaphone (喇叭筒) works in the same way. It makes sound travel farther. lt reflects the sound into
a beam which can travel a long way. In the ship, the sailor uses the megaphone to make his voice travel.
Without the megaphone, his voice cannot travel far.
We use reflected sound in many ways. We use it to measure the depth of the sea, for exam-ple. Among
the animals, bats (蝙蝠) and whales use reflected sound to tell them where they are and what things are near
them.

A. shout in a small room
B. shout in a large house full of things
C. shout in narrow valleys (山谷)

a. We hear the reflected sound
b. The sound returns to us
c. The sound hits the walls
d. We make a sound

B. c, a, b, d
