【題目】 Today more and more people want to live in big cities, but what can be done to help them live in crowded cities like Tokyo? Many architects( 建 筑 師 ) are looking for ways to solve this problem. 25-year-old Haseef Rafiei has caught the world’s attention because of his special skyscraper concept(摩天大樓概 念)—“Pod Vending Machine” skyscraper.
Haseef comes from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. He is now a student of Manchester School of Architecture. He got his idea form a trip to Japan. He noticed vending machines are popular in Japan. He said, “Vending machines make buying easy and interesting.” After seeing vending machines have made such a difference to people’s lives, Haseef thought, “Why not build skyscrapers that act the same way?”
Haseef’s “Pod Vending Machine” skyscraper can act as a home vending machine. If people want to buy houses in the skyscraper, they can choose the types of pods(吊艙) they’d like to live in and what the inside of the pods looks like. Then the large 3D printer at the top of skyscraper can get the pods printed and then cranes ( 起 重 機(jī) ) can get the pods placed. A smart system inside the skyscraper decides the best place for every pod. If a person doesn’t want to live in his pod any more, the pod will be returned to the 3D printer to get recycled. How amazing it is!

【題目】 According to a survey, many people think genes(基因) and intelligence have something to do with students' success or failure. But there aren't any researches to support this opinion. And in fact, it is not right at all. There is one thing that can finally decide students' success or failure. That is how they learn. A few students are clever and lucky. They find good ways for themselves to study every subject well. But others aren't so lucky like them. They don't find correct ways of their own and fail in the end.
To teachers, what is the best way to teach languages? Dr. Asher found a way called “Total Physical Response”. This was helpful to students. Studies in San Jose State University showed that if students moved their bodies when learning English, they were able to learn a lot more new words and grammar in a very short time. But if they sat still and didn't move, they could learn less. And after a year, the students who moved their bodies when learning remembered 80% or more things they learned. But others forgot more than 80%.
Now you may know how to learn English. Keep moving when you learn. So when you listen to a story or an article, do action as soon as you hear it. And you can imagine you are the person in the story or the article. By doing this, you can learn more English and you can remember it longer. The most useful is that you can use it more easily. Stop your old method. Try this one at once!

【題目】 Why would someone decide to stop eating? We know that the body needs food in order to work well. However, many people fast at some time during their lives. Why is this?
Some people fast for political reasons. In the early 20th century, women in England and the United States weren’t allowed to vote. So many women went on fast. They hoped that fasting would bring attention to it. Mohandas Gandhi, the famous Indian leader, fasted 17 times during his life. For Gandhi, fasting was a powerful political tool. In 1943, he fasted to bring attention to his country’s need for independence. For 21 days, he went without food. Another famous faster was Cesar Chavez. In the 1960s, he fasted for three weeks. Why? His goal was to bring attention to the terrible working conditions of farm workers in the United States.
Fasting is also a practice in many religions(宗教). Every year during the month of Ramadan, which is a religious holiday, Muslims(穆斯林) fast from sunrise to sunset. Many Indians fast at special time, and there was also a fasting holiday in ancient China.
Of course, not everyone fasts for political or religious reasons. People sometimes fast just because it makes them feel better. The American writer Mark Twain thought fasting was the best medicine for common illnesses. Whenever he had a cold or a fever, he stopped eating completely. He said that this always made his cold or fever go away. Another American writer, Upton Sinclair, discovered fasting after years of eating too much and headaches. His first fast lasted for 12 days. During this time, his headaches and stomachaches went away. Sinclair said that fasting also made him more alert and energetic.
