Moms take care of their children life and dads bring home food and make the family rules. These are the roles moms and dads fall into when they become parents and it’s common among all cultures. But times change and parents’ roles seem to be changing, too. More women are bringing

home food by having full-time jobs and men are taking care of their children at home.

Chinese TV show Where Are We Going, Dad? provides a closer look at the changing roles of dads in modern family life. The show follows the adventures of five celebrity(明星)dads who take trips with their young children (aged 4 to 6) and try to complete a set of tasks. It shows how young dads are trying hard to find the best way to raise their children and keep a closer relationship with them. Young dads no longer want to be cold.

Psychologists(心理學家)say that a strong fatherly influence is important in a child’s development. Fathers teach their children skills and encourage them to try new things. They also give them a sense of safety. A child learns that if something goes wrong, he or she can depend on dad to help fix it. The psychologists also say that without a dad, a child is more possible to drop out of school and get into trouble.

A mother’s love is important, and so is a father’s love. Chen Mo, a psychology professor says,“It takes both parents to raise a child. Children have different needs at different ages and this needs to be considered by both parents.”

【題目】All living things need energy to live and grow. This energy comes first from the sun. Plants use water and sunlight to make their own food. Animals can not make their own food, and they eat plants. Other animals then eat the plant eaters.

A food chain shows what eats what. It might show that zebras eat grass and then lions eat zebras.

Lions also eat other animals. Zebras eat other kinds of plants. So it takes more than one food chain to show how lions and zebras get their energy.

A food web shows how food chains work together. From it we can see how energy moves from plants to animals.

Plants and animals that live in hot, dry deserts depend on water as well as food. Creosote bushes have small leaves that hold water. Their seeds provide food and water for kangaroo rats. Kangaroo rats don’t need to drink water. They get all the water they need from the plants they eat. Kangaroo rats keep cool by coming out only at night to look for food. Ringtail cats also come out only at night. Ringtail cats hunt and eat kangaroo rats. Coyotes eat both the kangaroo rats and the ringtail cats.

Nothing is wasted in a food wed. Vultures eat dead animals. Vultures are scavengers. Scavengers do not hunt and kill other animals to get food. They eat animals that are already dead. When a ringtail cat or a coyote dies, it makes a meal for the vultures. Scavengers do an important job in keeping the environment clean.

1Where does the energy that living things need first come from?

A. Animals. B. Plants. C. The sun. D. Plant eaters.

2Why do ringtail cats come out only at night?

A. Because they are afraid of coyotes. B. Because they are shy animals.

C. Because it is very hot in the daytime. D. Because they can eat kangaroo rats.

For years people have enjoyed following the life of Garfield the cat. Garfield is a popular comic book character, known for being lazy and fat. But the cat was back in the news recently for something you might not expect.

A man in the United States changed the gender of Garfield to “none” on the cat’s Wikipedia ( ) page. After that lots of people got angry and kept

changing Garfield’s Wikipedia page. They argued about whether the cat was a boy,

girl or neither.

Wikipedia finally locked the page to stop people editing( 編輯) it. Jim Davis, Garfield’s creator, settled(解決) the argument.

“Garfield is male,” he simply told the Washington Post. The 71-year-old artist said he liked working with animals because they didn’t have to be old, young, boys or girls. He was angry that some people cared so much about Garfield’s gender.

It seems like quite an unnecessary argument to have. But it is not the only recent example of argument about gender.

To celebrate International Women’s Day in Australia earlier this year, the city of Melbourne made

10 traffic lights with a figure( 人形) dressed in a skirt. They were designed to celebrate Women’s Day and give them more confidence in public.

But not everyone thinks the idea is necessary. Some people think it is important for women to be treated fairly in Australia, but that this idea is silly.

“I’m all for doing anything we can for gender equity(公平), but really?” Melbourne mayor( 市長)

Robert Doyle told the Herald Sun. The mayor said this idea is more likely to be laughed at than bring respect to women.

1What put Garfield the cat back in the news recently?

A. The cat’s lazy character.

B. Being included in Wikipedia.

C. The cat’s picture being changed on Wikipedia.

D. The cat’s gender being changed on Wikipedia.

2What does the underlined word gender in the passage mean?

A. Wikipedia should lock the page about Garfield

B. Garfield can be a boy or a girl, and young or old

C. artists don’t care about animals’ age or gender

D. it’s unnecessary to take Garfield’s gender seriously

4Why did Melbourne make 10 traffic lights with a figure dressed in a skirt?

A. To laugh at women in public

B. To celebrate International Women’s Day

C. To bring more chances to women

D. To treat women fairly in Australia

5What did Melbourne mayor Robert Doyle think of the traffic light idea?

A. It would give women more confidence in public.

B. It would help women be treated fairly in Australia.

C. It would bring respect to women.

D. It was not a good idea for gender equity.
