One day, a teacher was giving a speech to his students .He held up(舉起)a glass of water and asked the class. "How heavy do you think this glass of water is ?"
The students’ answers ranged(范圍) from 20g to 500g .

Have you ever had the strange feeling that you were being watched? You turned around and, sure enough, someone was looking right at you!
Parapsychologists (靈學(xué)家) say that humans have a natural ability to sense when someone is looking at them. To research whether such a“sixth sense”really exists, Robert Baker, a psychologist (心理學(xué)家) at the University of Kentucky, did two experiments.
In the first one, Baker sat behind unknowing people in public places and stared(盯著)at the backs of their heads for 5 to 15 minutes. The subjects(受試者)were eating, drinking, reading, studying, watching TV, or working at a computer. Baker made sure that the people could not tell that he was sitting behind them during those periods. Later, when he questioned the subjects, almost all of them said they had no sense that someone was staring at them.
For the second experiment, Baker told the subjects that they would be stared at from time to time from behind in a laboratory setting. The people had to write down when they felt they were being stared at and when they weren’t. Baker found that the subjects were no better at telling when they were stared at and when they weren’t.
Baker concludes that people do not have the ability to sense when they’re being stared at. If people doubt the outcome of his two experiments, said Baker,“I suggest they repeat the experiments and see for themselves.”

  1. 1.

The aim of the two experiments is to ________

    1. A.
explain when people can have a sixth sense
    2. B.
study how people act while being watched in the lab
    3. C.
study whether humans can sense when they are stared at
    4. D.
prove why humans have a sixth sense
  2. 2.

    2. B.
      result
    3. C.

    4. D.
      connection
  3. 3.

In the second experiment, the subjects _________

    1. A.
could tell when they were stared at
    2. B.
could tell where they weren’t stared at
    3. C.
couldn’t tell who they were stared at or who they stared at
    4. D.
couldn’t tell when they were stared at or when they weren’t
  4. 4.

People are born with a sixth sense
    2. B.
      The experiments support parapsychologists’ idea
    3. C.
The subjects do not have a sixth sense in the experiments

On February 9th, 2013, Sarah Darling was walking along the street when she met a homeless man named Billy Ray Harris. She reached into her change purse, emptied out all the coins she had and gave them to the homeless man. Neither of them realized that this small generous act would change their lives.
Sarah didn’t realize that she had given Billy not only all her change but also her diamond ring that she had put in her change purse earlier until the following morning. She and her husband, Bill Krejci, rushed to see if they could find Billy. The homeless man was not only in the same place, he also immediately returned the ring. Sugar—free beets(甜菜)that still taste sweet, tastier tomatoes and brighter-colored fruits and vegetables that stay ripe(熟的)longer are all foods that are being grown now. How can they
carry traits, such as being tastier, brighter, and riper? They are genetically engineered.
Genetic engineering(基因工程)is like making a change in a recipe. For example, when you make cakes, you mix together all of the usual ingredients. If you add an extra ingredient, like salt, the cakes will taste differently.
Genes are ingredients in the recipe for life. They carry the traits of living things. Your genes dictate what color hair and eyes you’ll have, how tall you’ll be, as well as many other traits. Genes carry traits for plants, too. By adding genes to a plant, you can sometimes create new traits. For example, adding a certain gene to a potato plant can make the potato plant distasteful to bugs(蟲(chóng)子). This makes some farmers happy because they don’t have to use chemicals to keep bugs away from their plants.
It sounds great, but some people are opposed to the idea of food that is genetically engineered. Ronnie Cummins, from the Campaign for Food Safety, is against it. He says that one of the major concerns is allergies(過(guò)敏). Supermarkets don’t always label foods that are genetically engineered. A customer could unknowingly buy food that has an added gene from another plant that he or she is allergic to. It could be dangerous.
Gary Burton from Monsanto, a seed(種子)company that engineers food, disagrees. He says his company tests for allergies. Burton believes that genetic engineering is a valuable tool for making better food. The technology can help farmers use less insecticide(殺蟲(chóng)劑)and grow healthier crops. Burton thinks there are many advantages.
But Cummins says that we just don’t know what will happen in the future if we keep adding genes to foods. We could mistakenly create a monster.
People have different opinions about genetic engineering. One side supports it and thinks it will only help us. The other side is opposed to playing with nature and fears health risks. Which side do you think is right?

  1. 1.

What could be a good thing about food that is genetically engineered?

    1. A.
      It’s more expensive
    2. B.
      It could taste different
    3. C.
      It requires less insecticide
    4. D.
It’s not labeled in the supermarket
  2. 2.

In general, who does not support the idea of genetic food?

    1. A.
      People from seed companies
    2. B.
      Farmers who use engineered seeds
    3. C.
People from the Campaign for Food Safety
    4. D.
Scientists who create genetically engineered food
  3. 3.

    It can be inferred that

    1. A.
growing genetic foods will make farmers richer
    2. B.
people will eat more genetic foods in the future
    3. C.
using fewer chemicals could make the food tastier
    4. D.
there could be unknown dangers about genetic foods
  4. 4.

What is the best title of this passage?

    1. A.
      Future Farming
