I never wanted a dog, but now I'm so glad I have one. About two years ago, my wife, Cathy, got a little dog with a face only a mother could love. We named her Gertie.
Gertie is the kind of dog that has to grow on you. So I dicided that the dog would be trained. This didn't quite go as planned. At 15 weeks old, she was nearly made to leave the Petsmart Training School. She spent every night lying in our bed-snoring (打鼾)so loudly that I hardly got a good night's sleep.
Then, about six months after she arrived, I felt that something in my heart was taking place, and I was unable to stop it. My behaviour(行為方式)began to change. I began to smile at people when passing them in a street. I returned(招手)from neighbours. I started calling my kids, and to my surprise, they started calling me. I even tried to speak to my grandchildren over the phone once. I even was glad to listen to laughter from a 10-month-old granddaughter. The point is that I was changing.
My wife and I both agree that it is Gertie who has changed my behaviour. Gertie is now nearly two years old and almost fully grown.I have come to like the pet little by little, though she is my wife's dog

    3. C.
It wasn't necessary to be trained

Jack is the name of a game. It is quite popular with children. To play jacks, you will need a small ball and ten small metal objects (物體) called jacks.
The rules for this game are quite easy. To begin with, put the ten jacks on the floor or ground in front of you. Toss the ball high, pick up one jack and then catch the ball. Keep the jack in your hand and go on to pick up the other jack one at a time. You lose your turn if you do not catch the ball, or if you do not pick up a jack, or if you drop (掉) any of the jacks from your hand.
When you finish all the ten jacks, you now try to do the same thing again but with two jacks at one time. This is more difficult, of course. You lose your turn if you make any of the above three mistakes (錯誤) or if you do not pick up two jacks each time

Very few people enjoy exams. I don’t, either. And although I tell myself not to worry about them, I always do! So I’m not surprised that my students worry about them, too, even though they usually don’t need to. Because they are afraid of failing. However, since it is hard not to worry at all, we all must try not to worry too much. Why? Because worrying makes exams worse! How to do this?
Ask the teacher about how to revise and about exam skills—how to work when you are in the exam. Good students don’t wait until the week before an exam. They study all through the year. It is not possible to learn everything at the last minute. So don’t leave it till then.
If you start planning and working for each exam early and you make sure that you understand what you’re studying, then, when it is over, you’ll be able to say, “What a good exam that was!”
Take a short rest during your time of work and revision. If your mind is tired, it won’t remember well. Work at the time when you know you’ll work at your best.
If you’re studying in the evening, don’t go straight to bed afterwards. Your mind will still be “going round and round”—thinking too much. Do something else, maybe walk or get exercise. Choose something that will relax you, and make you think of other things.
If you feel bad, talk to someone about your worries. But don’t be too relaxed! Some stress over exams makes you work hard for them

When I was a child I never said, "When I grow up, I want to be a CEO," but here I am. When I look back on my career, I realize the road to becoming a CEO isn't a straight, clear path. In fact, no two paths are the same. But whether you want to be a boss one day or not, there's a lot to learn from how leaders rise to the top of successful companies.
As this series of stories shows, the paths to becoming a CEO may be different, but the people in that position(位置) share the qualities of commitment(義務), work ethic(道德) and a strong desire for building something new. And every CEO take risks along the way—putting your life savings on the line to start a software company or leaving a big business to be one of the first employees at a startup.
I grew up in Minnesota, and learned how to be an entrepreneur(企業(yè)家)from my father, who has run a small business for almost 30 years. I went to Georgetown University and tried a lot of business activities in college with success. And I always had a dream job pattern(模式): to walk to work, work for myself and build something for consumers(顧客).
I'm only 29, so it's been a quick ride to CEO. Out of college, I worked for AOL as a product manager, then moved to Revolution Health and ran the consumer product team. In mid-2007 I left Revolution Health and started LivingSocial with several other workmates, where I became a CEO.
Career advice: Don't figure out where you want to work, or even what industry you'd like to work at. Figure out what makes you do so. What gives you a really big rush? Answer why you like things, not what you like doing. . . and then apply it to your work life. Also, just because you're graduating, don't stop learning. Read more books than you did in college. If you do, and they're not, you're really well-positioned to succeed in whatever you do

Some people like to get up early, but some do not. In fact, it is really good for us to get up early every day. Maybe those who don’t like getting up early will not believe this, but it is true. Scientists made a survey(調查) in about one thousand people, and then they found that early rising people had less disease(疾病) than late rising people, and early rising people also look healthier than late rising people, and so on.
So we may know early rising is helpful in more than one way. Firstly, it helps to keep us healthy. We all need fresh(新鮮的) air. And air is the freshest early in the morning. Besides(此外), it is useful to do morning exercises.
Secondly, early rising helps us in our studies. In the morning we learn more quickly and find it easier to understand what we learn.
Thirdly, early rising can give us a plan of our work for the day. We cannot work well without a good plan.
Fourthly, early rising gives us enough time to get ready for our work, such as to wash our hands and faces and eat our breakfast.
Late risers may find it difficult to form(形成) the habit(習慣) of early rising. They have to make an effort(努力) to do so. As the English proverb(諺語) says, “Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise.”
