On October 31st, 2009, Chinese famous scientist Qian Xuesen, died in Beijing when he was 98 years old. He is famous as "the country’s father of space technology and king of rocketry". 
    Qian was born in 1911 in Hangzhou.He left for the United States after winning a scholarship to graduate school in 1936.He studied at the Massachusetts Institute(學(xué)院) of Technology and later at the California
Institute of Technology.
     Qian began his career in the US and was regarded as one of the brightest minds in the new field of
aeronautics{航空學(xué)) before returning to China in 1955.
     After he returned, Qian set up the first missile (導(dǎo)彈) and rocket research institute of China.The institute later helped start Chinese space program. He led the development of China's first nuclear-armed ballistic
missile and worked on its first satellite.
     He retired in the year before Chinese manned space program was launched in 1992. But his research
formed the basis for the Long March CZ -2F rocket that carried astronaut Yang Liwei into orbit in 2003.
In August, 2009,Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao visited Qian and praised him for devoting his life to Chinese defense technologies. Qian told him, "I'm trying to live to be 100 years old"

　　Thomas Stevens was born at Great Berkhamstead, Hertfordshire, England,
on December 24,1854. In 1871 he went to the USA.He left Oakland, California
in 1884 on a Columbia Standard and became the first person to ride a bicycle

     Jackie Heinricher's love with bamboo started in her backyard. "As a child, I remember playing among the
golden bamboo my dad had planted, and when it was windy, the bamboos sounded musical. It was my
favorite place."
     A biologist (生物學(xué)家) by training, Heinricher, 47, planned to work in a company in Seattle, where she
lived with her husband, but she found it too boring. Her garden gave her the idea for a business. She would
plant bamboo on their private farm. 
     Heinricher started Boo-shoot Garden in 1998. She realized early on what is just now beginning to appear
on the rest of the world. Bamboo is useful as well as earth-friendly. It can be used to make skate-boards,
buildings, fumiture, floors and even clothing. Bamboo takes in four times as much carbon dioxide (CO₂) as
hardwood trees and gives out 35% more oxygen (O₂).
     First she had to find a way to produce a lot of the plants.   It was a hard task since bamboo flowers create
seed (種子) only once every 50 to 100 years. And dividing a
bamboo plant too often kills it."People kept telling us we'd never succeed," says Heinricher. " Others had
worked on it for 27 years! I believed in what we were doing, though, so I just kept going."
     After a nine-year experiments, she found a way to grow millions of plants. The number of workers in her
company increased from 5 to 55. Now she is working on all kinds of bamboo and selling them all over the
world.   
     "We are at the wonderful moment," she says. "It takes me a lot of time to decide where to pay my
attention. Producing bamboo products? Selling plants to gardeners? Educating farmers about the economic
(經(jīng)濟的) and environmental value of bamboo forests? Or asking the govemment to line roads with bamboo?"
