Living in a foreign culture can be exciting, but it can also be confusing (令人迷惑的). A group of
Americans who taught English in other countries recently discussed their experiences. They decided that
miscommunications were always possible, even over something as simple as "yes" and "no".
On her first day in Micronesia, an island in the Pacific, Lisa thought people weren't paying any attention
to her. The day was hot. She went into a store and asked, "Do you have cold drinks?" The woman there
didn't say anything. Lisa repeated the question. Still the woman said nothing. She later learned that the
woman had answered her: She had raised her eyebrows (眉毛), which in Micronesia means "yes".
Jan remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria, a country in Europe. She went to a restaurant that
was known for its cabbage. She asked the waiter, "Do you have cabbage today?" He nodded his head. Jan
waited, but the cabbage never came. In that country, a nod means no.
Tom had a similar problem when he arrived in India. After explaining something in class, he asked his
students if they understood. They answered with many different nods and shakes of the head. He thought
some people had not understood, so he explained again. When he asked again, they did the same thing. He
soon found out that his students did understand. In India, people nod and shake their heads in different
ways depending on where they come from. You have to know where a person is from to understand
whether they mean "yes" or "no".

One day when some government officials were rebuilding a barn (谷倉), they found a mouse hole
in a comer and used smoke to make the mice inside come out. A while later they saw mice running out,
one after another. Then, everyone thought that all the mice had escaped. But just as they began to clean
up, they saw two mice squeezing (擠) out at the mouth of the hole. With some efforts (努力), the mice
finally got out. However, it was strange that after they came out of the hole, they did not run away at
once. Instead, one chased after the other near the mouth of the hole. It seemed that one was trying
to bite (咬) the tail of the other.
Everyone was confused, so they walked nearer to take a look. They realized that one of the mice
was blind and could not see anything, and the other was trying to allow the blind mouse to bite on his
tail so that he could pull the blind one with him to escape.
After seeing what happened, everyone said nothing and lost in thought. During the meal time, the
group of people sat down in a circle and started to chat about what happened to the two mice.
One serious American official said, "I think the relationship (關(guān)系) between those two mice was that of
king and guard." The others thought for a while and said, "That was why!"
A smart French said, "I think the relationship between those two mice was that of husband and wife."
Again the others thought for a while, and all felt it made sense.
A Japanese said, "I think the relationship between those two mice was that of mother and son."
Once again the others thought for a while, and felt this was more reasonable. So they expressed
agreement another time.
At that moment, one Chinese asked, "Why did those two mice have to have a certain relationship?
Suddenly, the group looked back at the Chinese and remained speechless. The American official,
the French and the Japanese who had spoken earlier all lowered their heads in shame, and did not
dare (敢) to answer.
In fact, the true love is not built on friendship, loyalty (忠貞), or blood relationship, Instead, it is
based on no relationship.

Last year, I was invited to attend a party for "Tuesday's Child", an organization that helps children with
the AIDS virus. I was asked to attend because I am on a TV show. I went there because I care.
At the party, they had all kinds of small rooms. I got into a special one. In this room, anyone could paint
a square. They gave everyone paints in bright, beautiful colours and asked the kids to paint something beautiful.
As I looked around at all the squares, I saw the pictures were all bright, except one.
The boy sitting next to me was painting a heart, but it was dark, empty, and lifeless. It lacked the bright
colours that other children used.
At first I thought maybe he took the only paint that was left and it just happened to be dark. But when I
asked him about it, he said his heart was that colour because his own heart felt dark. I asked him why and
he told me that he was very sick and his mother was very sick, too. He said that his sickness was not ever
going to get better and neither was his mother's. He looked straight into my eyes and said, "There is nothing
anyone can do to help."
I told him I was sorry that he was sick and I could certainly understand why he was so sad. I could even
understand why he had made his heart a dark colour. But I told him that it isn't true that there is nothing
anyone can do to help. Other people may not make him or his mother better but we can do things like giving
him or her hugs. Then I hugged him for a long time. I thought my own heart would burst with the love I felt
for this sweet little boy. After that, I asked him if he felt any better. He said he did, but he was still sick and
nothing would change that. I walked away feeling sad.
As I was getting ready to head home, I felt a tug on my jacket. I turned around and the little boy was
standing there with a smile on his face. He told me, "My heart is changing colours. It is getting brighter.
I think those hugs really work."
On my way home, I felt my own heart had changed to a brighter colour.
1. "Tuesday's Child" was _____.
