On a hot summer day, ice-cold watermelon serves up a delicious treat. Sure, the rosy flesh (果肉) quenches your
thirst
(解渴). But now there are more reasons than ever for people to reach for a slice of watermelon.
Meet Dr. Alison Edwards. She is a scientist at the Agricultural Research Service. Scientists are people who come
up with new ideas called theories (理論). They usually do scientific research to test their new theories. That's how
they find out if a new idea is a good one, or if the new idea will bring an even better idea.
At her lab, Dr. Edwards recently learned more about the secrets of why watermelon is good for you!
Dr. Edwards has known for a long time that watermelon has vitamin C. But recently she learned that watermelon
also has lycopene (番茄紅素). It is something that gives tomatoes and watermelon their rosy red color.
What's so special about the lycopene in watermelon?
Dr. Edwards says that watermelon and tomatoes both have lots of lycopene. It seems that your body can use the
lycopene from   watermelon more easily than the lycopene from raw (生 的) tomatoes.   In fact,    the lycopene from
tomatoes is more easily absorbed (吸收) inside your body once they have been cooked.

                                                    How I study English
I often hear some students say English is difficult, and it gives them a headache. So they can't learn it
well. But English is very easy for me. I'm good at it. I'm very glad to tell you something about how I study
English.
First, I think an interest (愛好) in English is very important. When I was in Grade One, we had a new
subject - English. It was fresh for me . I was interested in it, so I worked hard at it. Soon we had an
English exam and I got a very good mark. How happy I was! After that, I learned English harder and
harder. Our English teacher often teaches us English songs, the songs sound nice. I often think how
interesting English is!
Second, I think English is a foreign language. I should learn it well in the following ways: Listen to the
teacher carefully, speak bravely, read aloud and have a good vocabulary (詞匯). Then practice again and
again, never be tired. And I also have a good habit: Asking whenever (不論何時) I have a question, I
must make it clear by asking our English teacher. How happy I am when I understand!
Besides this, I often read English stories, jokes and easy novels. From these I know English is not only
interesting, but also useful. They help me understand a lot of things. So to do more reading is an important
way to learn English well.
And I also do some exercises from our class magazines, and I often write English diaries. English has
become a close friend of mine.
Now I have learned English for more than two years. I always keep the first position in our school.
From these words, I hope every student can learn English well.

What is blood? Blood is a thick, red fluid which carries oxygen, water and

If you lose a lot of blood, you need new blood. You can receive new blood
from other people. This is called a blood transfusion (輸送).
People can donate (捐獻(xiàn)) blood at a Red Cross Blood Bank. People who
give blood are called blood donors (捐獻(xiàn)者). Some people sell their blood but
many others donate it.
Donating blood doesn’t hurt you and it doesn’t take long. First a nurse take a

blood pressure (血壓). After that the nurse puts a needle into a vein in your arm.
The needle is attached to a tube. The blood flows through the tube into a plastic
bag. After about 10 minutes, when the bag is full, the nurse takes the needle out of
your arm. You stay on the bed and rest for a few minutes. Finally you go into

We often see planes speed up on the runway and take off at the airport. Can this happen on the water?
Aircraft carriers (航空母艦) make it possible. An aircraft carrier is a type of ship that planes can fly from-and
land on-like an airport on the sea.
On the foggy mo/'ning of August 10, China's first aircraft carrier began its trial run at Dalian Port in
Liaoning and returned four days later.
The carrier was at first called the Varyag ("瓦格良"號). It was built in the former Sovriet Union (前蘇聯(lián)).
However, the Soviets failed to complete the ship. China bought the Varyag in 1998 from Ukraine (烏克蘭) after
the former Soviet Union collapsed (解體).
After the first sea trial, China will go on refitting (改裝) the ship and doing test work. Building an aircraft
carrier is hard work. There is still a lot to do, such as training pilots.
Many people remember the aircraft carriers of World War II, a war in which big ships played an important
role. The Japanese attacked the US Navy at Pearl Harbor (珍珠港) in 1941 by surprise with the help of an
aircraft carrier. The Japanese also lost the Battle of Midway (中途島之戰(zhàn)) with the US in 1942 because their
carriers were hit.
Only nine other countries in the world have aircraft carriers. Some countries consider a Chinese aircraft
carrier a threat. But China's Defense Ministry (國防部) spokesman Geng Yansheng said: "China always sticks
to the road of peaceful development. The aircraft carrier is for protecting national security (安全) and doing
more for world peace."
