How important is keeping healthy to you? A group of young people got together to discuss this
question. Here's part of their discussion.
PETER: I'd like to stay healthy, but to be honest, I only eat food that tastes good. And if food tastes
good, it's usually bad for you, isn't it? Cola tastes better than water, for example.
TONY: Well, food that is bad for you can taste good! But I prefer not to eat much food that is fried,
like, er, French fries. Do you eat fast food, Laura?
LAURA: Do I eat fast food? Never! I love to eat food that is healthy. I want to take care of my health,
so I eat mainly fruit and vegetables. Oh! And I stay away from sugar, you do too, don't you?
TONY: Hm, yes. And I think most people are in agreement that fruit and vegetables are good for health.
But, um, I would say that fast food itself isn't always bad for you, but too much of it is not good.
LAURA: Actually, did you know that it's been found in laboratory testing that some types of oil are really
bad for us? So I don't eat anything that's been cooked in oil. Also, did you know that some foods might
cause cancer? Like burnt barbecued meat. I've heard eating burnt food like this can increase (增加)the
risk of cancer.
PETER: Really! But I love to eat meat that's well cooked, even if it is a little burnt. It's delicious, and
meat isn't really dangerous, is it?
LAURA: Oh! Yes, it is! I never eat meat. It's not at all good for our health. If I were you, I'd eat nuts
instead.
TONY: Well, I agree it's good to eat lots of fruit and vegetables, but I think it's also fine to eat some
meat or fish. People who eat a balanced diet should be healthier than those who only eat biscuits and
hamburgers, shouldn't they? I prefer to only eat food that I like, but isn't it important to eat food that's
healthy, even if you don't like it? The main thing is to have a good balance.
Peter
Peter likes to eat   1   because he thinks it's   2  , and he doesn't mind

Tony

If the only sports you do are dancing your fingers across your keyboard, you could be in serious danger
of more than just becoming fat!
Do you feel sleepy, like something is weighing down on your head? Do you feel forgetful? Do you
sometimes feel uncomfortable up and down your neck and lower back, and you can't explain why? Do you get
sick often? It could be radiation (輻射) from your computer causing it. If you spend three hours or more a day
in front of a computer, (and at this point, who doesn't?) you are more easily harmed by these hazards (危害).
We have got so used to using computers that we don't often think of them as dangerous sources (來源)
of harmful (有害的) radiation
. A safe amount radiation is 25 V/m (Volts/meter). Do you want to guess how
much our personal computers give off?
      ★ Keyboard: 1000 V/m        ★ Mouse: 450V/m       ★ Monitor: 218 V/m
      ★ CPU: 170V/m                  ★ Notebook computers: 2, 500 V/m
Ways to Protect Yourself from Harmful Computer Radiation:
      1. Decorate your desk with cactus (仙人掌) plants, they take in radiation.
      2. Drink two to three cups of green tea a day and eat an orange daily. The vitamins in tea leaves and
oranges protect us from radiation and keep our eyes healthy as well.
      3. Use a screen filter (過濾器) for your monitor.
      4. Avoid having metal objects nearby on your desk.
      5. Put the back of the computer to the wall. Most of the radiation comes off the back.

put your photo on your Internet page.

We do some strange things when we don't like the way our life is going. Too often we blame (埋怨)
someone else.
"I wish my parents were more understanding."
"I have such a bad Chemistry teacher!"
"My friends are so boring and self-centered. They make my life worse and worse."
     Blame! Blame! Blame!
It seems natural to sing this self-pitying song, but the truth is, if you don't like your life, you should do
something about it. No one else knows exactly how you feel or what you need. No one can read your
mind correctly. You are the only one with the power (能力) to change your life, and if you want it to be
different, you can change what you're doing. This means asking "What do I need? What do I want to do?"
instead of trying to meet others' needs. For example, try to decide how you want to spend your evening
instead of asking somebody else for advice. We teach other people how we want to be treated. If you
don't think of our own needs, no one else will either.
When you're in trouble, don't give away your power to decide how you feel about yourself. Choose
how you want to think and act. Other people can't make you unhappy or angry. They only act in their
own way and then it's up to you to decide how you will respond (回應(yīng)). For example, your friends go
out to lunch without you. You feel angry. How are you going to act? You may blame your friends …
"They are not kind. Who needs them anyway?" or you may tell your friends how you feel, listen to their
explanation (解釋), and let them know you'd like to be invited next time.
When you decide everything in your own way, you're getting hold of your own life and shaping it
according to your tastes and feelings. You can choose to be happy, to make friends and to build an
interesting life. When you blame others for what is or isn't happening in your life, you have stopped
growing or learning.
One of the most important rules is that you can never change another person by your direct action. The
only person you have the right and power to change is yourself. Once you change, the other person then
has something different to respond to and change is possible. If you want change in your life, begin with
yourself … put love into your power to take action.
1. What should we do if we don't like our life?
A. Sing that self-pitying song.
B. Read our minds correctly.
C. Change what we're doing.
D. Tell others what we want.
2. If the writer's friends have dinner together without him, he may _____.
A. forget it and be still friendly with them
B. talk to them and try to find out why
C. do the same thing to them in return
D. ask somebody else to talk to them
3. What's the writer's idea about how to change others?
A. He thinks it's impossible to change others.
B. He believes our love can change everything.
C. He chooses to talk with others directly.
D. He prefers to change ourselves first instead.
4. How many points of view (觀點(diǎn)) are mentioned in the passage?
A. Three.
B. Four.
C. Five.
D. Six.

Animals seem to have the sense to eat when they are hungry and they do not eat more than their bodies
need. It has been shown that rats will, when given a choice over a period of time, prefer water with
vitamins to water without vitamins even there is no difference in taste or smell between the two water
bottles. When a fragrant flavor (香味) was added to the vitamin-enriched water, the rats did seem to
develop a taste for it and kept drinking it, even after the vitamins were switched to the clear water. In time,
however, they broke the habit and went back to where the necessary vitamins were.
In a classic experiment, babies of 6 to 12 months old were placed in a cafeteria feeding arrangement,
with a wide selection of baby food before them. They were given whatever they pointed to or appeared
interested in. We are told that at first they showed some unusual eating patterns (方式), but over a period
of time they managed to select well-balanced diet.
So, in selecting food, rats and babies do seem to know and act on what's best for them. Apparently,
there is a kind of "body wisdom", which humans soon lose. Most of us do not eat as wisely as we could. Many of our food preferences are culturally determined and influenced by long established habits. Some
people eat foxes, dogs and blackbirds, while we eat cows and pigs. So what people eat and how much
they eat seems to be greatly influenced by what is going on around them.
1. As far as their eating habits are concerned, babies and rats are similar in that both _____.
A. have the natural abilities to choose a balanced diet
B. develop a taste for the same kinds of flavors
C. have the same eating patterns
D. prefer flavored food and drink
2. In the experiment on rats, a fragrant flavor was added to the water to _____.
A. prove that vitamins are tasteless
B. find out rats preference in flavor
C. encourage rats to drink vitamin-enriched water
D. test whether rats know which drink is good for them
3. According to the passage, adults eating habits differ from those of babies because _____.
A. adults have more choices of food than babies in eating patterns
B. adults usually cannot resist the temptation of various delicious food
C. adults' eating habits are closely related to the social and culture customs
D. adults know better than babies what kinds of food are good for their health
