These three things are spelling, pronunciation and meanings.
First, a dictionary will tell you the spelling of a word. If you are not sure about the spelling of a word,
you can try to find the correct spelling in a dictionary. Words are listed in a alphabetical order-a,b,c and
so on. For example, on a dictionary page the word "poor" p,o,o,r - comes before "poverty" - p,o,v,e,r,t,y
   - and the word "proverty" comes before the word "power" - p,o,w,e,r. The words are always given in
  alphabetical order.
The second thing, a dictionary will tell you pronunciation. Most dictionary give phonetic, or sound,
alphabet. The phonetic spelling will tell you how a word is pronounced. There are a few different
phonetic alphabets. Many dictionaries use the International Phonetic Alphabet to show pronunciation.
The third thing, a dictionary will tell you the meanings of the words. You can look up a word and find
out what it means. Many words have more than one meaning, and a good dictionary will tell you all of the word's meanings. For example, in English the common word "get" has over 20 different meanings.
1. In the passage, which of the following is among the three important things?
A. How to write a word well.
B. How to use a word.

Now satellites are helping to forecast (預(yù)報(bào)) the weather. They are in space, and they can reach any
part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere (大氣), because this is where the weather
forms (形成). They send these pictures to the weather stations. So meteorologists (氣象學(xué)家) can see the
weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change.
Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive
new pictures, the meteorologists compare them with earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the clouds have
changed during the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In
their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this.
So the weather satellites are a great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the
scientists could forecast the weather for about 24or 48 hours. Now they can make good forecasts for three
or five days. Soon, perhaps, they may be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead (提前).
1. Satellites travel ____.
[     ]
A. in space
B. above space
C. above the ground
D. in the atmosphere
2. Why do we use the weather satellites to take pictures of the atmosphere?Because ____.
[     ]
A. clouds form there
B. the weather forms there
C. the weather satellites can do it easily
D. the pictures can forecast the weather
3. Meteorologists forecast the weather ____.
[     ]
A. without studying satellite pictures
B. before they receive satellite pictures
C. when they have received satellite pictures
D. after they have compared the new satellite pictures with the earlier ones
4. Maybe we'll soon be able to forecast the weather for _____.

A. one day
B. two days

The idea of daylight saving time started with an American named Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790). He
explained how a lot of the money spent on candles used for light (this was before electricity) could be saved
if everyone woke up earlier and went to bed earlier.
Even though Franklin's idea had a clear meaning, most people didn't want to get up earlier than they had
to. Who would?
It was not until 1907 that an Englishman named William Willet came up with a way to "make" the sun set
later. His idea was to turn clocks forward by 20 minutes on each of the four Sundays in April, for a total of
80 minutes.
William's idea was laughed at, at first. But when World War I started in 1914. Many countries decided they
had to save energy for the war.
Daylight saving time has other uses. The more time you spend outside playing, the less time you are spending
in front of the computer or the TV. These things also use energy.
Also, daylight saving time sometimes causes problems. For example, China used it in 1986-but stopped it in
1991. That was because me temperatures are quite different from North to South and time from East to West.
If the people from northwest part of China use daylight saving time. sometimes they have to get up to work
when it is not very bright outside. That will cause some trouble for them.
Still, most parts of the world do have daylight saving time, and most people look forward to the extra hour
of evening light.
1. Why did Franklin give the idea of daylight saving time?
A. To save the money.
B. To save time.
C. To wake up earlier.
D. To go to bed earlier.
2. In what year was the idea of daylight saving time put in use?
A. In 1907.
B. In 1914.
C. In 1986.
D. In 1991.
3. If it is 6:00 now, which is Willet's idea time?
A. 5:40.
B. 6:20.
C. 6:40.
D. 7:20.
4. Why is daylight saving time not used in China now? Because _____.
A. people wouldn't like to get up earlier
B. the temperatures are quite different
C. the country is large
D. the time is quite different
