Like many other animals, swallows will fly south when the days turn cold and the leaves from trees
begin to fall. They travel many miles to find a warmer winter. This type of travel is called migration (遷徙).
Birds are animals that like to migrate a lot when it is cold. About 600 out of 9,000 kinds of birds do it.
They leave in autumn and come back during the warm spring months.
Many birds don't like the cold. They need food, but plants die and insects (昆蟲) hide in winter. So,
they'll only come home the next year, when there will be plenty of food for them to eat.
But the trip is often hard and not safe. Many birds fly in groups and make noises. Cranes (鶴) fly in
groups like the letter V, or in a row. Others travel in pairs or alone.
Some can travel a very long way. They fly between lands. For example, the Arctic tern (北極燕鷗)
can travel 20,100 kilometres. They build a home near the North Pole (北極), go to the Antarctic (南極洲)
in autumn, and then come back in spring.

During the cold winter days you may find it hard to wake up in the morning. It's warm and cozy

In winter, many animals like to sleep, too. But their sleeps can be very long and deep. This kind of
sleep is called hibernation (冬眠). During this kind of sleep, their temperatures go down, and hearts beat
(跳動(dòng)) slowly. They take very small breaths.
Animals can hibernate for part or all of the winter. It's hard for them to find things to eat. When they
go to sleep, they don't need much food.
Bears, hedgehogs (刺猬) and chipmunks (花栗鼠) go to sleep in their homes. Frogs and snakes
hibernate, too. Frogs move into the earth under water to keep themselves warm.
Before they go to sleep, they eat a lot to get fat (脂肪). Some also keep food in their homes to eat later.
Bears are the biggest animals that hibernate. They often sleep in caves (山洞).
Bears must eat a lot of things like nuts before going to sleep for a long time. They eat as much as 300
apples (that's the same as 60 hamburgers) each day for many weeks. They can eat for 20 hours in a day!
Bears can go into a very deep sleep. It can last from three months to half a year. During that time they
do not eat, drink or go to the toilet. A mother bear can give birth to babies during her hibernation.

Rivers are one of our most important natural resources (自然資源). Many of the world's great cities
are located on rivers, and almost every country has at least one river flowing through. That plays an
important part in the lives of its people.
Since the beginning of history, people have used rivers for transportation. The longest one in the
United States is the Mississippi. The lifeline of Egypt is Nile. To the people of India, the Ganges is great,
but it is also important for transportation; ships can travel along it for a thousand miles. Other great rivers
are the Congo in Africa and the Mekong in Southeast Asia. The greatest of all for navigation (航海),
however, is the Amazon in Brazil. It is so wide and so deep that large ships can go about two thousand
miles upon it.
Besides transportation, rivers give food to eat, water to drink, water for crops, and chances for fun
and recreation for the people who live along their banks. In order to increase the supply of water for crops,
engineers sometimes build a dam (大壩) across a river and let a lake form behind the dam. Then people
can use the water not only to irrigate (灌溉) their fields but also to make electricity for their homes and
industries. However, large cities and industries that are located upon rivers often make problems. As the
cities grow in size and industries increase in number, the water in the rivers becomes polluted with
chemicals and other materials. People are learning the importance, however, of doing more to keep their
rivers clean if they want to enjoy the benefits (利益) of this natural resource.

Now satellites are helping to forecast the weather. They are in space, and they can reach any part of
the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere (大氣), because this is where the weather forms
(形成). They send these pictures to the weather stations. So meteorologists (氣象學(xué)家) can see the
weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will
change.
Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they
receive new pictures, the meteorologists compare them with earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the
clouds have changed during the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon
change, too. In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this.
So the weather satellites are a great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the
scientists could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours. Now they can make good forecasts for
three or five days. Soon, perhaps, they may be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead.
1. Satellites travel ______.
[     ]
A. in space
B. in the atmosphere
C. above the ground
D. above space

Like all insects, ants (螞蟻) have six legs. Each leg has three joints (關(guān)節(jié)). The legs of an ant are very
strong so they can run very quickly. If a man could run as fast for his size as an ant can, he could run as
fast as a horse. Ants can lift 20 times their own body weight.
The life of an ant is usually 45-60 days. Ants use their antennae (觸角) not only for touch, but also for
smell. The head of an ant has a pair of large, strong jaws (顎). The jaws open and shut sideways like a pair
of scissors (剪刀). Grown-up ants cannot eat hard food. Instead they have the juice that they get from pieces
of food. They throw away the dry part that is left over. An ant has two eyes. Each eye is made up of many
smaller eyes. They are called compound eyes. An ant has two stomachs. One stomach holds the food for
itself and the other is for food to be given to other ants. Like all insects, the outside of their body is hard.
Each ant group has at least one or more queens (蟻后). The job of a queen is to lay eggs and worker ants
look after them.
Worker ants look after the young, protect the nest (巢) from unwanted visitors and look for food. At
night worker ants move the eggs and baby ants deep into the nest to protect them from the cold. During the
daytime, worker ants move the eggs and babies to the top of the nest so that they can be warmer. Each
group of ants has its own smell. In this way, visitors can be made out at once. If a worker ant has found
where the food is, it leaves a special smell so that the other ants in the group can find the food. Ants are
clean and tidy insects. Some worker ants are given the job of taking the waste from the nest and putting it
outside in a special rubbish dump.

It is said that all the dreams serve a purpose (目的). While there is no agreement among scientists about
why we dream, there are many ideas about the different kinds of dreams we have.
One common kind of dream is the repeating dream, in which the same story is repeated again and again,
often for many months or even years. Some believe these are a sign people have a problem in their life
and once that problem is gone then the dream will stop. Others think they are a way to help people
remember something very important.
Another well-known kind of dream is the nightmare. The pictures and stories in such dreams make
people very afraid and dreamers usually remember them far more clearly than normal dreams. The cause
of such dreams may be seeing something frightening such as a car accident or some dead snakes. Others
think such dreams may be trying to make a person pay attention to something that is dangerous in their life.
Daydreams happen during wake-time when we forget where we are or what we are doing and find
ourselves in a made-up story or unreal word. We often daydream when we are doing something that is
not interesting or exciting. They help us think about our future.
Lucid (清醒的) dreams are the most fun. These happen when dreamers suddenly understand that they
are dreaming. Instead of waking up, they stay in the dream and are able to control what happens in the
dream as if they are making a movie.
