The idea of daylight (日光) saving time started with an American named Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790).
He explained how a lot of the money spent on candles used for light (This was before electricity電) could be
saved if everyone woke up earlier and went to bed earlier.
Even though Franklin's idea had a clear meaning, most people didn't want to get up earlier than they had
to. Who would?
An Englishman named William Willet didn't come up with a way to "make" the sun set (落下) later until
1907. His idea was to turn clocks forward (向前) by 20 minutes on each of the four Sundays in April, for a
total (總計) of 80 minutes.
William's idea was laughed at, at first. But when World War I started in 1914, many countries decided
they had to save energy (能源) for the war.
Daylight saving time has other uses. The more time you spend outside playing, the less time you are
spending in front of the computer or the TV. These things also use energy.
Also, daylight saving time sometimes causes problems. For example, China used it in 1986 —but stopped
it in 1991. That was because the temperatures are quite different from North to South and time from East to
West.
If the people from northwest part of China use daylight saving time, sometimes they have to get up to
work when it is not very bright outside. That will cause some trouble for them.
Still, most parts of the world do have daylight saving time, and most people look forward to the extra
(額外的) hour of evening light.
1. Did the idea of daylight saving time start with an American named Benjamin Franklin?

2. In which year was the idea of daylight saving time put in use?

New rules and behavior standards (行為規(guī)范) for middle school students came out in March. The Middle
School is going to use a new way to decide who the top students are. The best students won't only have high
marks. They should not dye (染) their hair, smoke or drink because they are students. The following are some
of the new rules.
Have you ever copied someone else's work in an exam? Don't do that again! That's not something an
honest student should do.
Do more at school. Good students love animals and care for other people. April is Bird-loving Month in
China. Is your school doing anything to celebrate it? You should join! And you can learn more about animals
and how to protect them. Be friendly to the people around you. Try to think of others, not only yourself.
Be open to new ideas. Do you think people can live on the moon? Maybe you'll find another earth
someday. Don't look down on new ideas. Everyone's ideas are important. You should welcome them, because
new ideas make life better for everyone.
Protect yourself. Has someone ever taken money from one of your classmates? Don't let it happen to
you. If you have to go home late, you should let your parents know.

                                                                   Birds Journeys

The wish that shows birds to begin their journeys, and the highly exact feeling of direction shown by
traveling birds, stay among the most puzzling mysteries of science. The Arctic tern and the golden plover are
two examples of these unusual birds.
In the north during the springtime, traveling birds return to the Arctic (北極) from southern areas.
The longest journey is made by the unbelievable Arctic tern. This amazing bird is no larger than a crow (a
kind of bird) , but its body surface (outside) is more updated. The tern is called the long-distance champion
of the bird world, often traveling 23,000 miles a year between West Africa and the Arctic. Such journeys
take weeks, with stops for food and rest.

There are no rests, however, for the golden plover, a non-stop flyer among Arctic birds. The plover's
journey is like that of a land plane over water, since the plover cannot land on the water to rest. Without
stopping, the golden plover flies 2,000 miles from Hawaii to Alaska or from South America to Nova Scotia
and northern Canada. This little bird (only eleven inches) is fat and strong when traveling north, but is thin
and weak when it arrives after fighting ocean winds for sixty or more hours.
1. Look at the first paragraph. What does the underlined word "mysteries"mean?
[     ]
A. 秘密
B. 神秘
C. 機(jī)密
D. 隱秘
2. What do the tern and the plover have in common?
[     ]
A. Their bodies are updated.
B. Their bodies are fat and strong.
C. They travel great distances.
D. They travel the same amount of time.
3. From the second paragraph, we get to know that the tern _______.
[     ]
A. is as big as a crow
B. is an Arctic bird
C. travels a long distance
D. travels to another land
4. After traveling north, why does the golden plover become thin?
[     ]
A. It stops once for food.
B. It can fly better and faster.
C. It is no bigger than a crow.
D. It has to fly against the ocean wind.

                                                             How Long Can People Live?
She took up skating at age 85, made her first movie appearance at age 114, and held a concert in the
neighborhood on her 121st birthday.
When it comes to long life, Jeanne Calment is the world's recordholder. She lived to the ripe old age
of 122. So is 122 the upper limit to the human life span (壽命)? If scientists come up with some sort of pill
or diet that would slow aging, could we possibly make it to 150-or beyond?
Researchers don't entirely agree on the answers. "Calment lived to 122, so it wouldn't surprise me if
someone alive today reaches 130 or 135," says Jerry Shay at the University of Texas.
Steve Austad at the University of Texas agrees. "People can live much longer than we think," he says.
"Experts used to say that humans couldn't live past 110. When Calment blew past that age, they raised the
number to 120. So why can't we go higher?"
The trouble with guessing how old people can live to be is that it's all just guessing. "Anyone can make
up a number," says Rich Miller at the University of Michigan. "Usually the scientist who picks the highest
number gets his name in Time magazine."
Won't new anti - aging techniques keep us alive for centuries? Any cure, says Miller, for aging would
probably keep most of us kicking until about 120. Researchers are working on treatments that lengthen the
life span of mice by 50 percent at most. So, if the average human life span is about 80 year, says Miller,
"adding another 50 percent would get you to 120."
So what can we conclude from this little disagreement among the researchers? That life span is flexible
(有彈性的), but there is a limit, says George Martin of the University of Washington. "We can get flies to
live 50 percent longer," he says. "But a fly's never going to live 150 years." Of course, if you became a new
species (物種), one that ages at a lower speed, that would be a different story, he adds.
Does Martin really believe that humans could evolve (進(jìn)化) their way to longer life? "It's pretty cool to
think about," he says with a smile.

1. What does the story of Jeanne Calment prove (證明) to us?
[     ]
A. People can live to 122.
B. Old people are creative.
C. Women are sporty at 85.
D. Women live longer than men.
2. According to Steve Austad at the University of Texas, _______.
[     ]
A. the average human life span could be 110
B. scientists cannot find ways to slow aging
C. few people can expect to live to over 150
D. researchers are not sure how long people can live
3. What can we infer (推斷) from the last three paragraphs?
[     ]
A. Most of us could be good at sports even at 120.
B. The average human life span cannot be doubled.
C. Scientists believe mice are aging at a slower speed than before.
D. New techniques could be used to change flies into a new species.

There have been many great inventions, things that changed the way we live. The first great invention
was one that is still very important today -the wheel. This made it easier to carry heavy things and to travel
a long distance.
For hundreds of years after that there were few inventions that had as much effect (作用) as the wheel.
Then in the early 1800's the word started to change. There was little unknown land left in the world. People
didn't have to explore much anymore. They began to work hard to make life better.
In the second half of the 19th century many great inventions were made. Among them were the camera,
the electric light and the radio. These all became a big part of our life today.
The first part of the 20th century saw more great inventions. The helicopter (直升飛機(jī)) in 1909. Sound
movies in 1926. The computer in 1928. And jet planes in 1930. This was also a time when a new material was
first made. Nylon came out in 1935. It changed the kind of clothes people wear.
The middle part of the 20th century brought new methods (方法) to help people get over diseases. They
worked very well. They made people healthier and let them live long lives. By the 1960's more people could
expect to live to be at least 60.
By this time most people had a very good life. Of course new inventions continued to be made. But man
now had a wish to explore again. The world is known to man but the stars are not yet. Man began looking for
ways to go into space. Russia made the first step. Then the United States took a step. since then other countries,
including China and Japan, have made their steps into space.
In 1969 man took his biggest step away from earth. American first walked on the moon. This is certainly

Imagine you receive an e-mail that looks something like this: ARE YOU GOING TO CLASS TODAY?
How does reading this message make you feel? Why did the sender use all capital letters? Was he or she
angry, or did that person just forget to turn off the 'Caps Lock' on the computer? The fact is, this e-mail
'sounds' like the writer is shouting because using all capital letters in an e-mail is usually the way that people
shout online.
Knowing when and when not to use capital letters is just one example of online etiquette (規(guī)矩) often
called netiquette. Virginia Shea's book, Netiquette, lists a basic set of dos and don'ts for communicating
(交流) rightly with others online. Following are some of her suggestions.
First, always remember that you are sending messages to a real person, not just to a computer. Don't
type anything that you wouldn't say to someone's face. Also, remember that the person who receives your
message cannot hear the tone of your voice, or see the expression on your face, so make sure your meaning
is clear.
Don't do anything online that you wouldn't do in real life. Don't take anything without paying for it,
unless it's free. Don't use information that someone else has written, and say it's yours. Don't read other
people's e-mail-you wouldn't open your next-door neighbor's mailbox and open their mail, right? Do share
your knowledge of the Internet with others. It's a big place with lots of information, and there are many new
things to discover.
Remember that people think about you by your words as well as your actions, so do try to write well.
Good writing skills, as well as correct grammar and spelling, do matter. Send polite, well-written e-mail
messages to others. If you're uncertain about how to spell a word or which phrase to use, look it up. There
are lots of helpful books and websites.
It's okay to express your opinions online in forums like chat rooms or message boards, for example
"MSN" or "QQ", but don't start arguments with people. 'Flame wars' (網(wǎng)上論爭) in online discussions can
be interesting to read, but are often unfair (不公平) to other members of the group. Express your ideas, but
remember that fighting (打架) on or offline is just not right.
When you're online, just as in 'real' life, try to respect other people's space, privacy, and feelings.
Remember, you're not the only one traveling on this highway!
1. Using all capital letters in an e-mail means _______.
[     ]
A. shouting
B. laughing
C. pardoning
D. talking
2. Make sure your meaning in e-mails is clear because _______.
[     ]
A. the receiver can't see you or hear you
B. the e-mails are usually very short
C. it is easy to cause "flame wars"
D. e-mails are difficult to understand

3. From the last paragraph, we know that _______.

[     ]
A. besides us, there are many other people traveling on a highway
B. when we are online, we should think of other people and leave them enough time and room alone
C. we should follow the traffic rules when we are traveling on a highway
D. If we are online, we are in a real life
4. What is the best title for the passage?

A. The Information Highway
B. How to Write a Good E-mail
C. Netiquette-Internet Dos and Don'ts
D. Don't Use Capital Letters In E-mails

For most students, the time of exams is very stressful and difficult. Some people find exam time so bad
that they become ill, because they are afraid of failing; they are afraid of letting their parents and families down.
If exams are really making you ill or worried, don't hide your feelings. Talk to someone about it. If one person
doesn't help you, ask someone else.
How to get through exams? Here are some top tips by educational psychologists (教育心理學(xué)家):
Ask a teacher or tutor about how to revise, and exam skills-how to work when you are in an exam.
Take short rests during your time of work and revision. If your mind is tired, it will not remember well.
Plan your work: revise at times when you know you will work at your best.
Get enough sleep, and eat healthy food.
If you feel ill, talk to someone about your worries. But don't be too relaxed! Some stress over exams makes you work hard for them.
If it upsets (沮喪) you to talk to your friends about an exam when it is finished, don't do it! In fact, don't
even think about the exam you have finished. What is done is done. You cannot change what you have written!
To this advice, we would add:
If you are studying in the evening, don't go straight to bed afterwards. Your mind will still be "going round
and round"-thinking too much. Do something else, maybe walk or get exercise. Choose something that will relax
you, and make you think of other things.

Leaves are nature's food factories. Plants take water from the ground through their roots. They take a gas
called carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air. Plants use sunlight to turn water and CO2 into glucose. Glucose is a
kind of sugar. Plants are glucose as food for energy to grow. The way plants turn water and CO2 into glucose
is called photosynthesis. That means "putting together with light". A chemical called chlorophyll helps make
photosynthesis happen. Chlorophyll is green. It gives plants their green colour.
As summer ends and autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter. This is how the trees "know" to
begin getting ready for winter.
During winter, there is now enough light or water for photosynthesis. The trees will rest, and live on the
food they have stored during the summer. They begin to close their food-making factories. The green
chlorophyll disappears from the leaves. Then, we begin to see yellow and orange colours. A few of these colors
stay in the leaves all the time. We just can't see them in the summer, because they are covered up by the green
chlorophyll.
Red and purple colors we see in leaves are made mostly in the autumn. In some trees, like maples (楓樹),
glucose is stored in the leaves after photosynthesis stops. Sunlight and the cool nights of autumn turn this
glucose into red. The brown color of trees like oaks (橡樹) is made from wastes left in the leaves.

                                                                   Puppy People
Imagine taking a lovely puppy into your family. You love and train it through its first year, knowing
that at the end of the year, you'll have to give it up. That's just what puppy raisers do. Puppy raisers raise
guide dogs for blind and very weak people.
When a potential guide dog puppy is about eight weeks old, it goes to live with a family, sleeping inside
the house as a member of the family. It's fine if the family has lots of children or other pets, since a guide
dog needs to learn how to behave no matter who or what else is around.
The puppy raiser's duty is not to turn the puppy into a guide dog, but to make the dog a well-behaved
family member. That means someone must spend special time with the puppy, playing with it and training it.
Guide dogs take blind people into a complex world. There are many interesting things that could keep
the dog from working. The puppy raiser helps the puppy become socialized, or well-behaved in groups, by
giving it the chances to experience lots of new environments and praising it when it stays quiet. Visits to the
park, shopping centre, and bus stop are all very helpful field trips for the puppy. Since guide dogs may have
to travel in cars, buses, planes and boats, puppy raisers try to give their puppies useful experiences of this
nature too. Many puppy raisers even take their puppies to work with them.
Although the puppy raiser is not responsible for training the puppy to be a guide dog, the puppy can
be taught orders which can be easily understood. Everyday training classes teach the dog such easy orders
as "Sit," "Down," and "Stay." The one order the puppy is not taught is "Heel," because a guide dog stands in
front of the trainer, not at the trainer's side.
Dogs love to eat, but it is important for future guide dogs to learn to eat only from their own bowls.
They can be easily attracted by smells of food and something they can see while they are working, so there
can be no asking for food at the table and no things from strangers.
When the dog is between a year and eighteen months old, the puppy raiser's job is over. The dog is
now ready to do its real work. The family members have given their time and care to the dog. When their
work is done, they always feel sad to give up the dog they have loved so much.
They can do it only because they know someone else needs the dog more than they do.
