Hundreds of years ago, news was carried from place to place by people on foot or by horse. It took
days, weeks and sometimes months for people to receive news. Now it is possible to send words and
pictures around the world in seconds. Billions of people learn about news stories of their own country
and all over the world every day, either by watching TV or reading newspapers.
Newspapers have been an important part of everyday life since (自從) the 18th century (世紀(jì)).
Many countries have hundreds of different newspapers. How do newspaper editors decide which news
stories to print? Why do they print some stories and not others? What makes a good newspaper story?
Firstly, it is important to report new stories. TV stations can report news much faster than newspapers. Yet, newspapers give more about the same story. They may also look at the story in another way, or
they may print completely (完全地) different stories to those on TV.
Secondly, a news story has to be interesting and unusual. People don't want to read stories about
everyday life As a result (結(jié)果), many stories are about some kind of danger and seem(似乎) to be
"bad" news. For example, newspapers never print stories about planes landing safely, instead they print
stories about plane accidents (事故).
Another factor (因素) is also very important in many news stories. Many people are interested in news
in foreign countries, but more prefer(更喜歡) to read stories about people, places and events (事件) in
their own country. So the stories on the front page in Chinese newspapers are usually very different from
the ones in British, French and American newspapers.
1. According (根據(jù)) the passage, how do people learn about news stories in the world now?
A. They carry news stories and tell others from place to place oh foot or by horse.
B. They tell each other what they have seen with their eyes.
C. They watch TV or read newspapers.
D. They listen to the radio every day.
2.  The difference (區(qū)別) between newspaper stories and TV news reports is that _____.
A. people can learn more about the same news story from a newspaper
B. people can read the news story more quickly in a newspaper
C. people can read news stories in other countries
D. people can read news stories about their own country
3. To make a good newspaper story, how many factors does the passage talk about?
A. Two.
B. Three.
C. Five.
D. Six.
4. According to the passage, which of the following can you most possibly watch on TV?
A. You often play football with your friends after school.
B. Your teacher has got a cold.
C. A tiger in the city zoo has run out and hasn't been caught.
D. The bike in the front of your house is lost.
5. Which of the following is Not True of this passage?
A. News stories on the front page of every country are always the same.
B. People like to read interesting and unusual news.
C. Not only TV but also newspapers can help people to learn what is happening around the world.
D. Newspapers have been an important part of everyday life for more than three hundred years.

What do you think of the most important inventions in the world? The TV? The printing? The
telephone? Or the computer? A report shows that they are not the only important inventions. Here are
three other important inventions.
One of the simplest inventions is the toilet. Before toilets, waste ran into rivers from people's houses.
Illnesses were common in big cities, and it was often difficult to find clean drinking water.
Animal food is another important invention. Before the invention, most animals were killed every
autumn because there was not enough food for them in winter. After hay became a kind of common
animal food, animals could live through the long winter.
The third great invention is glasses. Glasses help people read, write and do "close work" after the age
of forty-five. Without glasses, the world would be difficult for the people above forty-five.

In the past, man did not have to think about the protection of his environment. There were not many
people on earth, and natural resources (資源) seemed to be unlimited (無限的).
Today, things are different. The world has become too crowded (擁擠的). We are using up our
natural resources too quickly, and at the same time we are polluting our environment with dangerous
chemicals. If we continue like this, human life on earth will not survive.
Everyone realizes today that if too many fish are taken from the sea, there will soon be none left. Yet,
with modern fishing methods (方法), more and more fish are caught. We know that if too many trees are
cut down, forests will disappear and nothing will grow on the land.
We realize that if rivers are polluted with waste products from factories, we will die. However, in most
countries, waste products are still put into rivers or into the sea, and there are few laws to stop this.
We know, too, that if the population (人口) of the world continues to rise at the present rate, in a few
years, there will not be enough food.
What can we do to solve these problems?
If we eat more vegetables and less meat, we will easily get more food. Land that is used to grow crops
can feed five times more people that land where animals are kept.
The world population will not rise so quickly if people use modern methods of birth control.
Finally, if we educate people to think about the problems, we shall have a better and cleaner living
place in the future.
The importance of protecting the environment
Problems 1. More fish being caught.
2. More __1__ being cut down.
3. More waste products being put into rivers.
4. More __2__ being born.
Causes The world is becoming too __3__.
Modern methods make the situation worse.
Result We human beings (人類) will not survive on the earth.
Solutions 1. Eat more vegetables and less meat so that more food will be
    available (可以獲得的) for everyone.
2. Use modern methods of __4__ control so that the population
    will not grow too fast.
3. Educate people so that the __5__ will be better and cleaner.
