【題目】Dear Know,
I need some advice on how to make friends! I have just moved to a new city.I am 13.I don't know anybody here and I want to make some friends. What's the best way? Where can I meet people?
Yours,
Tony
Dear Tony,
There are lots of things you can do.First, you can ride your bike in your neighborhood and try to find some kids. When you find some, you can go up and talk to them. You should also let your parents know that you want to make friends because they can help you.Maybe you can ask your parents to take you to the library or some places where there are lots of kids. You could try joining an art class or a sports club. These are all great ways to meet people. You can try making friends at churches (教堂) too if you go to church on Sundays.Try to be active wherever you are, but just be yourself and don't try so hard.It takes time and patience (耐心).I hope you will find a best friend soon!
Yours,
Know

【題目】Do you believe that only boys do well in science? Does it seem to you that girls have better language skills than boys? In your opinion, are boys better at building things? If your answer to each of those questions is “Yes”, you are right, according to an article in Current Science. There are exceptions(例外), but here are the facts. Usually, boys score higher in tests about math, while girls do better in tests about words, spelling and memory. But these differences may not always be true. In the future, a person’s abilities may not be decided by gender.
Jerome Kagan, a scientist at Harvard University, is studying the watching ability of 10-month-old children recently. Baby boys and baby girls are watching a “show” while seated on their mothers’ laps. In Act I of the show, an orange-colored ball is lifted from a blue box and moved slowly. Then it is returned to the box. This is repeated six times. Act II is almost the same with Act I, except that the orange ball is smaller.
Baby boys do not seem to notice the difference in the size of the ball, but baby girls immediately become excited and begin to make noises.
It’s also known that baby girls usually talk at an earlier age than baby boys do. Scientists believe that the left side of the brain develops faster in girls than in boys. As a result, by the time they start to school, little girls have an advantage that boys don’t have, but what have the boys been doing in the years before starting school? They have been developing something called aggression. An aggressive person feels strong and independent. He is often the first one to start a fight. It is said that aggression is caused by hormones(荷爾蒙). Scientists believe that hormones are not the only reason. They say aggression in boys is also caused by mothers.

【題目】If you like unusual places, you should visit the Hebrides Islands. Not many people live on these islands in the northwest of Scotland. The winters are long, cold, and wet. It’s hard to make a living on the Hebrides, but for a visitor, these islands can be very special.
They’re not for everyone. Even summer days are cool and often windy. The water is too cold for swimming. There are only a few trees and green fields. Instead of fields, there are just rocks and small plants. The hills, too, are just piles(堆)of rocks. Sometimes the view(風景) looks like pictures of the moon.
But there is beauty in this place. From the beach you can often see all the ways to the rocky hills. From the hills you can see far out to other islands and the open ocean. The colors, too, are special. Blue is everywhere. It’s in the sky and in the ocean. In the spring there is also green in the hills. In the summer and winter the hills are more purple.
On these islands you can forget about the rest of the world. The evenings are quiet. The restaurants close early, and there isn’t any nightlife. Visitors stay at a guest house or a bed.
Do not come to the Hebrides for shopping. Come to walk in the clean and cool air, and enjoy the quiet beauty and the views.
