【題目】 My First Marathon (馬拉松)

A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was hurt and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I decided to go ahead.

I remember back to my 7th year in school. After my first PE class, the teacher told me that I was "not athletic (運動型的)". The idea that I was "not athletic" stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a fight against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the fight against my own body and mind. A test of wills!

The night before my marathon, I dreamed that I couldn't even find the finish line.

I woke up, being helpless and nervous but ready to prove something to myself. Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe lace became untied. So I stopped to tie it. Not the start I wanted! I had been left behind others at the beginning.

At mile 3, I passed a sign: "GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!"

By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once-hurt-ankle hurt badly, but I still stayed the course, walking a bit and then running again.

As I came near to mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a. m. or questioned my expenses on running.

I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the person who came in first place had. I can now call myself a "marathon winner".

1What happened to the writer a month before his marathon?

A.He hurt his knees.B.He got hurt in one ankle.

C.He wanted to give up.D.He went back to his school.

2According to the PE teacher in the 7th year in school, the writer________.

A.didn't train hardB.could finish the marathon

C.wasn't good at sportsD.would get support from many fans

3What does the story mainly tell us?

A.One is never too old to learn.

B.Failure is the mother of success.

C.A man can make success with the help of family.

D.A winner is the one with great effort and a strong will.

【題目】

A woman was at the airport waiting for her flight to start boarding. She still had a lot of time, so she went to a shop and bought a book to read. While she was in the shop, she decided to buy a bag of cookies as well.

She arrived at her gate, sat down and started reading her book. She read her book so attentively that she didn’t notice what was going on around her. But she did see that a man had sat down next to her and taken one of her cookies out of the bag.

She pretended not to notice, as she didn’t want to make a scene (當眾大吵). But then the man took more. He kept eating the cookies until there was just one left. The man took the last cookie and broke it in half. He tapped the woman on the shoulder and held out one half to her.

The woman could not believe how much nerve this man had to steal all of her cookies and then offer half a cookie in return. She angrily grabbed (奪取) the half-cookie out of his hand and ate it without any words.

Finally, it was time for her to board. As she went to the gate, she reached into her purse. Suddenly, she realized that her bag of cookies was still in her purse. The man had eaten his own cookies the whole time and simply wanted to share the last one with her. The woman’s face turned red with shame. Therefore, she quickly caught up with him and said, “ 93 .”

When we’re not paying attention to the world around us, it can be easy to misunderstand what’s happening or even become angry with others. It is better to keep our eyes open and think about every possibility when trying to understand a particular situation.

1Did the woman arrive at the airport so early?

2Why couldn’t the woman notice what happened around her at all?

3What did the man do with the last cookie?

4How did the woman feel when she was offered the half-cookie?

5When did the woman realize her mistake?

6What did the woman probably say to the man? Please fill in the blank in paragraph 5 with at least TWO sentences.

【題目】 Our Great Ocean Road Adventure

By Donna Waverley

My family and I recently went to Australia, to see my grandparents. But before we visited them, we went sightseeing along the Great Ocean Road, on the Australian coast.

Dad had planned to drive, but even though he was used to driving miles without getting exhausted, he then read on the website that the road wouldn’t be an easy drive. Anyway, we thought he deserved to enjoy the fantastic views too, which he couldn’t do as our driver. So instead, we booked discount bus tickets and off we went.

Our first stop was where wild kangaroo lived – and Dad and I were taking a walk when a big one appeared! For a moment, it seemed to consider coming towards us, which made me a little nervous – but then it went off along the road and into the bushes.

That wasn’t the only wildlife we saw. I thought it unlikely we’d see famous Koala bears during our short visit. In fact, at our next stop, we saw roughly six million in that area! Sadly, some gum trees they were in had very few leaves left, which people told us was because of the Koalas, although I’d read that lack of water is indeed the problem.

Dad had booked a campsite for the night, with ready-made tents – for an adventure! I wasn’t sure about that, but they were really luxury tents, within walking distance of some famous rocks and other places we hoped to visit. However, Dad also said the sounds of wild creatures would help us sleep. That sounded worrying – until the “wild creatures” turned out to be frogs! So I was embarrassed by my fears – and kept awake by the frogs! But we had fun making meals together – we’d brought food, as we knew there’d be nowhere to eat.

In fact, this whole trip was fantastic!

1The passage is mainly about Donna’s visit to his grandparents, isn’t it?

2Why did Donna’s Dad decide not to drive the Great Ocean Road himself?

3How was Donna when she saw a big kangaroo along the route?

4What has caused the gum trees to be in such a bad state?

5Where did Donna’s family spend the night?

6What did Donna like and dislike about the place where they stayed?

Critical thinking isn't about thinking more or thinking harder, but about thinking better. Training your critical thinking skills can open up a door to a better world. But the journey of being a person with critical thinking is difficult. It requires a lot of hard work and practice.

Train your questioning skills.

Asking questions is perhaps the key act of critical thinking. If you don't know what questions to ask, or don't ask the questions in the first place, you may as well not get the answer. Finding the answer is what critical thinking is all about.

Think several steps ahead.

Don't just think one or two steps ahead. Think several. Imagine you're a chess grandmaster who's fighting with someone with the ability to think several steps ahead. You have to match intelligence with him. Once the problem you are working on may begin, use your imagination to guess what the possible futures will be.

Spare at least 30 minutes a day to improve your brain function.

Spend 30 minutes in your busy day making your brain more powerful. There are a few ways that you can do this:

●Try to be active in finding the solution to a problem a day. It could be a theoretical or a personal one.

●Find the time to exercise regularly. 30minutes of exercise— as little as a walk around the neighborhood——can help improve brain function.

●Eat the right kinds of foods. Avocados, blueberries, wild salmon, nuts and seeds, as well as brown rice play an important role in keeping your brain healthy.

As long as you keep practicing, you can improve your critical thinking a lot.

Critical Thinking

It is not 1 to be a person with critical thinking.

Ways to Improve Your Critical Thinking

You may get the answer2 you know what questions to ask.

3 the possible futures once the problem may begin.
