【題目】“Joe, did you book your ticket yet?” I asked. “No. I changed my mind. I’m not going to go.”“What? You aren’t going to Australia? We’ve been planning this vacation for months!”“Yeah, I don’t feel like it. We’ll go some other time.”

Over the coming weeks, I tried to get my friend to reconsider, but failed. Our trip to Australia was off. And none of my friends wanted to replace him. If I wanted to travel, it would have to be on my own.

It’s taught me that if I wait for others, I’ll never go anywhere. But there are places I want to visit, people to see, experiences to have, and food to try—and only so much time to achieve it all. So I refuse to wait. I won’t let others keep me from realizing my dreams. It can be scary travelling alone, especially then you’ve never done it before. But, to me, growing old without experiencing everything you want from life is more frightening.

If you’re been putting off a trip because you’re waiting for someone to go with—stop. Just go. Don’t let others hold you back from your dreams. Trust me, along the way you’ll make plenty of friends. More than that, travelling alone gives you real freedom. You wake up and it’s just you—what you want, where you want, when you want. In that freedom and great space of possibility, you meet yourself.

It’s sink or swim and you have to learn how to survive—who to trust, how to make friends, how to find your way around alone. That’s the greatest reward(獎賞) of travelling alone. Each time you go away, you learn to become a little more independent and confident.

Travelling alone is not for everyone. Some people return home soon after starting off, some cry for weeks before accepting it, and others just accept it right away. But you’ll never learn that if you don’t travel once by yourself. Whether a weekend away, a two-week vacation, or a trip around the world, try it at least once.

【題目】We are all busy talking about and using the Internet, but how many of us know the history of the Internet?

Many people are surprised when they find that the Internet was set up in the 1960s. At that time, computers were large and expensive. Computer networks (網(wǎng)絡(luò)) didn’t work well. If one computer in the network broke down, then the whole network stopped. So a new network system (系統(tǒng)) had to be set up. It should be good enough to be used by many different computers. If part of the network was not working, information could be sent through another part. In this way computer network system would keep on working all the time.

At first the Internet was only used by the government, but in the early 1970s, universities, hospitals and banks were allowed to use it, too. However, computers were still very expensive and the Internet was difficult to use. By the start of 1990s, computers became cheaper and easier to use. Scientists had also developed software that made “surfing” the Internet easier.

Today it is easy to get on-line and it is said that millions of people use the Internet every day. Sending e-mails is more and more popular among young people.

The Internet has now become one of the most important parts of people’s life.

1How long has the Internet been used?

A. For about 20 years.??? B. For about 30 years.??? C. For about 60 years.

【題目】From 2016, Children in Finland would not be taught cursive handwriting. Instead of learning this skill, schools would be given the choice to teach keyboard typing in its place. The change shows typing skills are now more related than handwriting, but experts say the move could do harm to a child’s brain development.

“Most people would agree that everyone should at least be able to pick up a pen or a pencil and write a message that others can read,”said Misty Adoniou, a lecturer.“But beyond legibility(易讀性), does it matter how you form your letters when you handwrite?”

She continued there was research connecting fluent(流暢的) handwriting with better written articles,“but the key isn’t the quality, form or style of the handwriting, but rather the automaticity(自動性) of the handwriting.”

Reports have also found that by the age of eight, children can already type faster than they can handwrite. But, as Misty Adoniou agreed, handwriting can play an important part in brain development.“Research shows that learning to write in cursive further improves students’ motor and visual(視覺的) skills, eye-to-handco ordination, hand and finger skills, and brain development. The physical act of handwriting also helps the memory of information and the flow(流動)of ideas.”

For example, in a recent study, researchers did brain scans on five-year-olds before and after receiving different letter-learning tasks. In children who practiced writing letters by hand, the neural(神經(jīng)的) activity was more improved and“aduit-like”than in those who had simply looked at letters.? “Technology can encourage and support plenty of child development and educational objectives, such as physical and health、”explained Dr.Leves, “And there is a body of research supporting the idea that children learn best when they’re having fun.”

But as Ms Adoniou concluded:“With so many things to do in a school day, it is hard to see why handwriting lessons continue. No matter how standardized we try to make handwriting, we all end up with our own style. Perhaps we’d do just all well to let children find their own style.”

1Ms Adoniou probably agrees that you will write articles better when _____.

A. you care less about your handwriting

B. you have a special style of handwriting

C. you improve the quality of handwriting

D. you have different forms of handwriting

2According to Ms Adoniou, cursive handwriting _____.

A. improves children’s eyesight

B. makes children’s hands strong

C. makes children have fewer ideas

D. helps children’s brains develop better

3What is the passage mainly about _____?

A. How to teach keyboard typing.

B. The reasons why students drop pens.

C. Some opinions on cursive handwriting.

D. How to improve your own writing style.

【題目】“Here is the shopping for Mr Green,”said Dad, handing me a big plastic bag. Dad owned a milk bar, and sometimes I helped out after school with deliveries(送貨). We had our regulars, but times were hard. Dad said it was the home deliveries that kept us in business-that, and the tea Dad imported(進口) from Fuzhou. Dad was well-known for his tea, and people came from miles around to buy it.

I loaded up my bicycle with Mr Green’s shopping. His order always included three packets of Dad’s tea. How Mr Green could drink that much tea each week was a mystery to me.

“See you later, Chen,”said Dad.

He always called me by my Chinese name.

Dad’s parents came from China in the 1950s. I had a yuan coin they brought with them. I cycled out into the sun, wishing I could drive-it would be so much quicker to make deliveries.

Dad always said the exercise was good for me. I knew he was right, but I’d already decided that when I left home, the first thing I would do was buy a car.

I loved anything to do with cars, and I’d decided I would be a mechanic, although I knew it wasn’t Dad had in mind for me. He’d already started saying to his friends, “When Chen goes to university...”If that happened, I would be the first person in my family to go, and it would be a great honor for my dad. But it wasn’t what I wanted. (改編于《新理念英語》九年級第1)??? (76-- 79 in no more than six words)
