1根據下句話If the thing passes the really-wanting-it test, try to wait for some time to see how strong the desire可知,如果你真的想要那個東西,試著先等一等,看到你想要的欲望還是否那么強烈。由此可知這個問題應該是C,意為“一周之后你仍然想要嗎?”

【題目】We all know that lying (說謊) is wrong. But do you know that it is bad for both your physical and mental health? A recent study shows that telling fewer lies helps people physically and mentally.

“For ten weeks, 110 people aged from 18 to 71 were tested to see the relationship between the number of lies they told and their health,” said Anita Kelly, a professor at the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. “When they lied more, their health declined,” said Kelly.

Researchers divided the people into two groups. Group A was told to avoid telling any lie for any reason to anyone. They may omit (忽略) the truth, refuse to answer questions, and keep secrets, but they can’t say anything that they know are not true. Group B was not told anything like this.

Over the study period, when people in Group A told fewer lies in a week than they did in other weeks, they experienced fewer health problems such as sore throats and headaches. Professor Linda Stroh said, “When you find that you don’t lie, you have less stress (壓力).” The results of past research show that each American tells about 11 lies a week. In both groups, when people lied less during a week, they reported better physical and mental health during that period.

“It’s certainly a good thing to have people be more honest,” said Robert Feldman of the University of Massachusetts. “It may improve our mental health, but I don’t think it can improve our physical health.”

【題目】 When your pen is broken, you think that’s the end of its life. You throw it away. It then joins tons of other garbage that is becoming a big problem in cities.

Each day, about 10,000 tons of waste is produced in Guangzhou, and 17,000 tons of household waste is produced in Beijing. In other countries, the case is similar. “If you’re like most of us, most Americans, you’re making seven pounds (3.17kg) of trash a day,” US writer Edward Humes told CNN. So, an American makes 102 tons of trash in a lifetime.

If you simply throw away that broken pen, it goes to a landfill(垃圾填埋場) and is buried together with many other trash. To prevent polluting the groundwater, workers cover the trash with soil and keep it dry. And your pen will stay there for a long, long time, without having further use. But it could have a better destination: the recycling bin.

Have you ever noticed the different colors of trash bins in the street? Many cities in China have been running a waste-sorting campaign. They divide trash into “recyclable waste” and “unrecyclable waste”. So in Yiwu there are many “Little Yellow Dog” appearing all around the city, even in our campus.

Recycling waste can save energy, reduce greenhouse gas, and keep space free for the unrecyclable trash. Take your pen as an example. At the recycling factory, its metal parts could be taken out and reused to make other things.

But recycling is not enough, experts say. Making less waste in the first place is the way forward. “The best thing to do is just to keep using your stuff for as long as you can,” US writer Adam Minter told Time Out magazine.

1How much trash does each American make every year on average?

2According to the story, how should we deal with broken pens?

A. Throw them away.B. Bury them in a landfill.

C. Put them into a recycling bin.D. Give them to our friend.

3Waste should be recycled because this can ___.

a. save energy b. produce greenhouse gas c. save landfill space d. save water

A. abB. bcC. ad D. ac

4What is the best way to reduce waste?

A. Recycle different kinds of waste.

B. Keep using your things as long as you can.

C. Keep waste inside your house.

D. Tell people about the importance of recycling.
