【題目】 In many businesses, computers have largely replaced paperwork, because they are fast, flexible, and do not make mistakes. As one banker said, “Unlike humanscomputers never have a bad day.” And they are honest. Many banks advertise that their transactions are untouched by human hands “and therefore safe from human temptation.” Clearly, computers have no reason to steal money. But they also have noconscience, and the growing number of computer crimes shows they can be used to steal.

Computer criminals don’t use guns. And even if they are caught, it is hard to punish them because there are no witness and often no evidence. A computer cannot remember who used it; it simply does what it is told. The head teller at a New York City bank used a computer to steal more than one and a half billion dollars in just four years. No one noticed this theft because he moved the money from one account to another. Each time a customer he had robbed questioned the balance in his account, the teller claimed a computer error, then replaced the missing money from someone else’s account. This man was caught only because he was a gambler. When the police broke up an illegal gambling operation, his name was in the records.

Some employees use the computer’s power to get revenge on employers they consider unfair. Recently, a large insurance company fired its computer-tape librarian for reasons that involved her personal rather her professional life. She was giventhirty day’s notice. Inthose thirty days, she erased all the company’s computerized records.

Most computer criminals have been minor employees. Now police wonder if this is “the tip of the iceberg.” As one official says, “I have a feeling that there is more crime out there than we are catching. What we are seeing now is also poorly done. I wonder what the real experts are doing---- the one who really knows how a computer works.”

Money-saving Tips for Students

One problem that most university students understand is not having enough money but to save it. Here are some money-saving tips for students we think will help.

Tip 1: 1. Write down what you spend money on, and when you spend it. Also, write down the money you get each month. Doing this will help you make better decisions about buying things.

Tip 2: 2. But what's even better is that you can get a job in a restaurant. Some restaurants give food to their workers, so you won’t need to worry about paying for meals.

Tip 3: 3. When you buy them from another student, you won’t even have to pay tax (). Many students sell lots of other things when they leave. Make sure to look around for lists of used things for sale at your university, and shop at secondhand stores if you can.

Tip 4: 4. You can save money by eating at home with family or by eating breakfast, lunch, or dinner with your roommates and share the cost.

Tip 5: 5. This can save you 30 percent or more. Driving cars or taking the taxi can be expensive, so if you live in school, leave the car at your parents’ home.

A. Getting a job is one of the best ways to make money.

B. Buy secondhand textbooks whenever you can.

C. Spend less money on transportation if you buy a bus or train pass.

D. Eating in restaurants can be expensive.

【題目】閱讀下列短文,根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容完成表格,每空限填一詞。

Now telephone, television, radio and the Internet all help people communicate with each other. As a result, ideas and news of events spread quickly all over the world. For example, within seconds, people can know who wins the vote in another country. An international football match comes into the homes of everyone with a TV set. When an earthquake or a flood happens in some places, news of these disasters can bring help from distant countries within hours. Help is on the way. Because of modern technology like the satellites (人造衛(wèi)星) that travel around the world, information travels fast.

How has this speed of communication changed the world? To many people, the world has become smaller. Of course this does not mean that the world is really becoming smaller. It means that the world seems smaller. Two hundred years ago, communication between two countries took a long time. In the 17th and 18th centuries, it took six weeks for news from Europe to reach America. This time difference influenced people’s actions. For example, a fight, or a war in 1812 between England and the United States could have been avoided (避免). A peace agreement had already been signed (簽署). Peace was made in England, but the news of peace took six weeks to reach America. During these six weeks, the large and serious War of New Orleans was fought. Many people lost their lives after the peace agreement had been signed. In the past, communication took much more time than it does now.

With the help of modern technology, it’s much easier to get more information within a short time. Our lives are becoming faster and faster.

【題目】 Many young people tell me that they want to be writers. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there is a big difference between being a writer and writing. In most cases these people are dreaming of wealth and being famous, not the long hours alone at the typewriter.

When I became a writer, I had no future. What I had was a friend called George. He found me a home. It was cold and had no bathroom. I could only afford a used typewriter. A year later, however, I still hadn’t received a break and began to doubt myself. But I knew I wanted to write. I would keep putting my dream to the test—even though it meant living with fear of failure. This is the shadow land ( 陰影) of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there. Then one day I got a call from a friend who asked me to be an assistant for $6,000 a year. As the dollars were dancing in my head, something brought me to my sense. “Thanks, but no,” I heard myself saying. After that, I walked around my little room and started to feel like a fool. I felt a little low.

Later, I gradually began to sell my articles. It was after 17 years of being a writer that Roots was published. At once I had the kind of success that few writers ever experienced. The shadows had turned into great sunlight. Before that, it was a long and slow climb out of the shadows.
