【題目】 Many young people tell me that they want to be writers. I always encourage such people, but I also explain that there is a big difference between being a writer and writing. In most cases these people are dreaming of wealth and being famous, not the long hours alone at the typewriter.

When I became a writer, I had no future. What I had was a friend called George. He found me a home. It was cold and had no bathroom. I could only afford a used typewriter. A year later, however, I still hadn’t received a break and began to doubt myself. But I knew I wanted to write. I would keep putting my dream to the test—even though it meant living with fear of failure. This is the shadow land ( 陰影) of hope, and anyone with a dream must learn to live there. Then one day I got a call from a friend who asked me to be an assistant for $6,000 a year. As the dollars were dancing in my head, something brought me to my sense. “Thanks, but no,” I heard myself saying. After that, I walked around my little room and started to feel like a fool. I felt a little low.

Later, I gradually began to sell my articles. It was after 17 years of being a writer that Roots was published. At once I had the kind of success that few writers ever experienced. The shadows had turned into great sunlight. Before that, it was a long and slow climb out of the shadows.

【題目】 In many businesses, computers have largely replaced paperwork, because they are fast, flexible, and do not make mistakes. As one banker said, “Unlike humans, computers never have a bad day.” And they are honest. Many banks advertise that their transactions are untouched by human hands “and therefore safe from human temptation.” Clearly, computers have no reason to steal money. But they also have noconscience, and the growing number of computer crimes shows they can be used to steal.

Computer criminals don’t use guns. And even if they are caught, it is hard to punish them because there are no witness and often no evidence. A computer cannot remember who used it; it simply does what it is told. The head teller at a New York City bank used a computer to steal more than one and a half billion dollars in just four years. No one noticed this theft because he moved the money from one account to another. Each time a customer he had robbed questioned the balance in his account, the teller claimed a computer error, then replaced the missing money from someone else’s account. This man was caught only because he was a gambler. When the police broke up an illegal gambling operation, his name was in the records.

Some employees use the computer’s power to get revenge on employers they consider unfair. Recently, a large insurance company fired its computer-tape librarian for reasons that involved her personal rather her professional life. She was giventhirty day’s notice. Inthose thirty days, she erased all the company’s computerized records.

Most computer criminals have been minor employees. Now police wonder if this is “the tip of the iceberg.” As one official says, “I have a feeling that there is more crime out there than we are catching. What we are seeing now is also poorly done. I wonder what the real experts are doing---- the one who really knows how a computer works.”

【題目】 When throwing away rubbish, do you know which bin it should go in? Have you ever noticed the differently-colored rubbish bins on the street? Some of you might not be able to answer the questions. However, it's actually quite important to know how to sort your rubbish. Not knowing how to sort rubbish can make it harder to save energy and protect the environment. If you don't sort your rubbish, all of it will be buried () together. It can take up large areas of ground that could have been used for planting trees. Shanghai is the first city to put rubbish-sorting into practice in China.

Shanghai government has asked all the people who live there to sort rubbish into four groups: wet, recyclable (可回收的), harmful and dry. "Wet" rubbish is also known as "household" rubbish. It is what people produce every day after they eat or drink. "It is the thing you don't want but pigs can eat", Guangzhou Daily explained. Paper, metal, glass and other things that can be reused are recyclable rubbish.

Harmful rubbish includes things like medicine, batteries and so on. Finally, any rubbish that is not wet, recyclable or harmful will go in the dry rubbish bin. 【題目】 My husband, my four-month-old daughter and I set out on a five day driving journey from California to Washington. We had to stop frequently because our little child needed to stretch from the car seat.

One of our stops, once we crossed the Oregon border, was at a Black Bear Diner. Walking towards the front door we noticed a gentleman standing at one side. He was clearly untidy, without shoes and wearing worn clothing. We passed right by him and opened the restaurant door. Then something told me to go back.

Holding my daughter, I turned around and said to the gentleman, "Sir. Are yon hungry?" He said, "Yes." I then asked, "May we buy you something to eat?" He responded with, “Sure, I can order something myself."

My husband opened the door and the gentleman went straight to the counter. I told him to order whatever he wanted. The manager of the restaurant came over quite quickly and looked frightened. I spoke before he had an opportunity to. “This gentleman will have lunch with us today,” I said. “Please add his order to our bill.” The manager said with a frown(皺眉), “Okay.” We turned to our table and the gentleman said loudly and quickly, " Thank You!" We were seated and upon completing our meal we were handed our bill. I asked my husband what the gentleman had ordered, one fresh orange juice, one coffee, one breakfast combination with a side of hash browns.
