【題目】

It was one of the honest days of the dry season. There was no rain for about a month. Cows stopped giving milk. On this day I saw a wonder.

I was making lunch when I saw my six-year-old son Billy walking very slowly to the woods. Minutes later, he ran to the house. Soon after that, I saw him walking to the woods again. This went on for an hour. Finally I walked out of the house quietly and followed him.

Billy cupped(窩成杯狀)both hands in front of him as he walked, careful not to drop the water he carried. Then I saw an amazing sight. Several large deer stood in front of him. Billy walked right up to them. I saw a tiny baby deer lying on the ground. It was dying of thirst, and it lifted its head to drink the water in my boy's hands.

When the water was gone, Billy ran back to the house. I followed him to the tap. Billy turned it on and let the water slowly fill up his "cup". When he stood up and turned, I was there in front of him. His eyes were filled with tears. "I'm not wasting water, Mum," he said. I joined him with a bottle of water from the kitchen. I let him walk to the baby deer alone while I stood meters away. As tears rolled down my face, they were suddenly joined by other drops… and more drops... as if the sky itself was crying.

【題目】 When your pen is broken, the battery in your toy runs out, or you have some leftover food. What do you do with these things? You will probably throw them all into one bin. But actually, all of these pieces of trash need to be sorted separately. In recent years, some Chinese cities have been working hard on it.

Shanghai has worked with Alipay to create a“ green account(綠色賬戶)”service for people. Account holders get points by correctly sorting their garbage. Through the Alipay app, they can exchange the points for milk, phone cards and other products. The city is asking all of its people to sort their garbage into four groups: wet, recyclable, harmful and dry.

Wet waste is also known as household waste. “They are things you don’t want but that pigs can eat,” Guangzhou Daily explained.

Paper, metal, glass and other things that can be reused are recyclable waste.

Harmful waste includes things like medicine batteries and fluorescent bulbs(熒光燈泡).

Finally, any waste that’s not wet, recyclable or harmful will go in the “dry waste” bin.

Many other Chinese cities are also using this method to sort their garbage. For example, Shenzhen has been sorting its garbage into the same four groups since 2012. Students there also receive waste-sorting guidebooks that they must study.

China is improving its waste-sorting efforts. There is still a long way to go. But it’s never too late to learn how to sort your trash properly and protect the environment.

If you don’t sort your garbage, all of it will go to a landfill and be buried together. These landfills can take up large areas of ground that could have been used for planting trees or crops. The electronic waste you throw away, such as batteries, can pollute the soil and groundwater. Other pieces of garbage, like the metal part of a pen, can be used to make other things if they are properly recycled.

A.B.C.D.

3What does the underlined word “l(fā)andfill” mean?

A.里程碑B.地下水C.填埋場D.風(fēng)景區(qū)

4What do we know about garbage sorting in China?

A.It started its garbage sorting system in 2012.

B.There is still a lot of work to be done in this area.

C.Landfills are a great method of dealing with garbage.

D.Students have to take waste-sorting classes in school.

5What is the main idea of the last paragraph?

A.Where we can deal with our waste.

B.Why we should sort our garbage properly.

【題目】

What do you do if you are in trouble on a lonely island? Surely you need to find a way to get in touch with the outside world. Your best chance of doing this is to draw the attention of a passing plane.

Body signals

Pilots from different countries understand body signals if they have the correct training. When you wave your arms up and down in a straight line, it means “yes”. When you point downwards and swing your arm from side to side, it means “no”. If you want the pilot to know that it’s safe to land, push your hands in front of you and bend your knees. If you want to say it’s not safe to land, put your arms in the air and move them to one side.

Smoke signals

The smoke from a fire can be seen from far away, so it’s a good way to draw attention. If the weather is dry, it isn’t hard to start a fire. Remember, however, the fires can be very dangerous if they get out of control. Never light a fire unless you are sure that it can’t spread. If the ground is dark, light smoke can be seen more easily. Green grass and leaves produce light smoke.

Ground-to-air signals

It’s a good idea to build some signals, too. Use large pieces of wood to make the symbols. If you can’t find any wood, use earth. Some useful symbols are

F “I need food and water.”

II “I need medicine.”

I “I am badly hurt.”

X “I am unable to move from here.”

Pilots’ replies

If the pilot lowers the plane’s wings from side to side, this means “message received and understood”. (At night, the pilot flashes the plane’s green lights.) If the pilot flies the plane in a clockwise (順時針方向的) circle, this means “message received but not understood”. (At night, the pilot flashes the plane’s red lights.)

However, there is no signal which means “message not received”

1Which picture means “it’s safe to land”

A.B.C.D.

2What can you use to build Ground-to-air signals on a lonely island?

A.Wood or earth.B.Grass and leaves.C.Wood and leaves.D.Sand or grass.

3What is the passage mainly about?

A.The explanation of body signals on an island.

B.The importance of making signals on an island.

C.Ways of living on a lonely island.

D.Ways of sending out signals on a lonely island.
