【題目】 Stephen Hawking was born in Oxford, England on 8th January, 1942. He went to school in St Albans — a small city near London. Although he did well, he was never top of his class. After leaving school, Hawking went first to Oxford University where he studied physics, then he went to Cambridge University where he studied cosmology. As he himself admits(承認(rèn)), he didnt work hard. He was a very lazy student, and did very little work. However, he still got good marks.

It was at the age of 20 that Hawking first noticed something was wrong with him. He started to bump (撞上)into things. When he visited his family at Christmas time, his mother was so worried that she made him see a doctor. Hawking was sent to hospital for tests. Finally, the result came back. Hawking had motor neural disease, an incurable illness which would make him unable to speak, breathe or move without the help of a machine. Doctors said they had no way to help him. He would die before he was 23.

At first, Hawking became very sad. After a while, though, he began to see his life in a different way. As he later write, “Before my illness was diagnosed(診斷), I had been very bored with life. There had not seemed to be anything worth doing. But shortly after I came out of hospital, I suddenly realized that there were a lot of worthwhile things I could do.” Hawking married, found a job at Cambridge University, and had three children. He also went on to do some of the most important scientific research.

Today, Hawking still works at Cambridge University as a professor. He strongly believes that his story shows that nobody, however bad their situation(處境) is, should lose hope. “Life is not fair,” he once said. “You just have to do the best you can in your own situation.”

Pigs are fat. They eat a lot. But they are useful to us. We get more than just pork from pigs. We can use their skin to make shoes. We can use their hair to make brushes. Pigs also provide us with materials for medicine.

People sometimes say: "You are as stupid as a pig.” But pigs are not stupid. In fact, pigs are one of the 10 smartest animals. They have a good memory and can tell different shapes apart. Many experts think pigs are easier to train than dogs or cats. In France, people teach pigs to find truffles which are a kind of plant with special smell. With their good sense of smell, pigs can find truffles even faster than dogs.

When you see pigs, they usually in dirty water or mud. That's because pigs have no sweat glands (汗腺). On hot days, they have to cool themselves in water or mud. This keeps insects off of them as well. Mud can also protect their skin from sunburns.

The wrong opinions about pigs often make us dislike the animal. For example, if someone eats a lot, we say that they have "pigged out". If someone's room is very messy, we might say his or her room looks like a place where pigs live.

But people in ancient China really liked pigs. People thought the pig's big head was a symbol of good luck. If someone had a round and chubby(胖乎乎的)face, he or she was thought to be blessed(有福氣的).People also believed the animal stood for wealth. Piggy banks, a symbol of this.
