【題目】Finally Home

Last year, my parents moved to this town. I had to go to a new school and found no one to be friends with because I wasn’t interested in the topics most of my classmates liked.

“Maybe I’ll never have real friends,” I thought.

I closed my eyes and imagined playing my drums. Suddenly, I heard the sound of a guitar.

I followed the sound and found out that was a band. I recognized the guitar player at my first sight and so did he.

“Hey, you’re Cassie from my class!” his voice surprised me.

“I’m sorry,” I said. “I just haven’t heard any live music in this town before! You sound great—did you guys write that song?”

“Yeah—well, we’re still working on it. I’m Matt.” He stood up and held out his hand.

“Mind if I listen in?” I asked in a low voice.

“Not at all,” Matt said, smiling. “Maybe you can give us some suggestions!”

The song was pretty good and I could really improve it with my drum skills. Behind my drum set was the one place I felt completely like myself. But I wasn’t sure if I wanted to open that door to the world.

“Hey, do you play drums?” Matt asked suddenly.

His question surprised me. How did he know? And then I followed his eyes to my hands, which had been beating a rhythm(節(jié)奏) on the floor. I tried to say no, but my heart stopped me from refusing. “Sure, I’ve been playing for a few years,” I said finally.

“Oh, wow! You’ve got to join us!” Matt said. “I have some drums over here.”

I looked at their shiny faces. “Absolutely. I would love to play!” I replied.

“One, two, three, four!” Matt counted and began singing, and I knew I was finally home.

【題目】Puzzled face asks for help

Think about the last time you did something that you found difficult. Was it working out a puzzle or working hard on your math homework?

Can you remember the expression you had on your face? Most people will press their lips together and frown when they are doing something they find difficult. This is normally seen as a sign of effort. Now we’ve found that it can also say more than that.

A recent study at the University of Portsmouth in England suggests that the human expression of effort and frustration(挫折) is our way of asking others for help.

Scientists at the university gave children and chimpanzees(黑猩猩) an impossible puzzle to work out. When the children couldn’t work out the puzzle, their faces expressed determination and effort. The chimpanzees’ did not.

Humans and chimpanzees have many facial expressions that share the same meaning. A human smile is the same as a chimpanzee showing its teeth in happiness.

Scientists believe that over time, humans have evolved(進化) to use this facial expression to ask for help. We have also learned to respond to it by offering help.

According to Dr Albert Mehrabian, a well-known professor of psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), only 7% of human communication happens through words and 55% is through body language. Therefore, understanding expressions is second nature to human beings.

With this in mind, next time you see a person with a frustrated expression, listen to your heart and stop to lend them a hand.

A. Scientists gave the chimpanzees an easy puzzle.

B. The chimpanzees smiled as they worked out the puzzle.

C. The chimpanzees’ face didn’t show determination or effort.

D. The chimpanzees used other expressions to ask for help.

4】【4According to Dr Albert Mehrabian, we learn that ____________.

A. body language is very important in human communication

B. people don’t like to use words to communicate

【題目】To write a great news story, you have to make sure it is correct, relevant (相關(guān)的) and fresh.

For a start, all the information in a story must be correct. Not only the spelling and grammar, but also the facts.

Any mistakes that show up in a story can get a newspaper into big trouble.

For example, if a newspaper said that Yang Liwei was the first man to go into space, it would be wrong. He wasn’t the first. The newspaper would probably lose lots of readers because of that mistake.

A news story does not only have to be correct, but it must also be relevant to its readers. People are mostly interested in news that happens near to them. That’s why you care more about what happens at your school than at schools in America. It’s also why newspapers in Beijing don’t talk much about news in Shanghai or Hong Kong.

Make sure it’s fresh.

Finally, news must always be fresh. When you pick up your evening newspaper, you want to read about news that happened that day. You don’t want to read about news from last week!

So, now you know what makes a good news story. Have a look at our paper and see if it’s full of good news! You can try writing a news story for our paper like a real reporter.

1What will happen if there is a mistake in a newspaper?

A. The reporter will probably have a lot of trouble.

B. The newspaper would attract more readers.

C. Many readers won’t buy the newspaper any more.

D. The reporter won’t be able to write for the newspaper again.

2Why would it be wrong for a newspaper to say that Yang Liwei was the first man to go into space?

A. Because the information was not fresh.

B. Because the information was not correct.

C. Because the information was not relevant.

D. Because the information was not useful.

3People are mostly interested in news that happens near to them, so newspapers in Beijing talk much about news in???? .

A. Nanjing??? B. Shanghai

C. Beijing??? D. Hong Kong

4Where does the writer work most probably?

A. In a newspaper.??? B. In a shop.

C. In a library.??? D. In a bank.

5Which can be the BEST title for the passage?

A. How to write an interesting story

B. Don’t make any mistakes in news

C. How to pick a good newspaper to read

D. How to write a story like a real reporter
