【題目】Young novelist

Suzanne Todd has just won the Best New Writer Prize for her first book, Roadrunner. The idea for the book came from her own travelsfour years ago she decided to give up her job in a bank to go round the world on her own for a year.

“I was tired of doing the same thing every day and wanted to find some excitement before it was too late,” she says. “It was fun getting ready for the trip, and thinking about all the things I would do. But when the day came to leave, I was suddenly afraid, and I didn’t want to go. I kept thinking, what am I doing? What’s wrong with me? I have no job, no money, and I am all by myself! I felt so worried sitting on the plane that I was counting the weeks until I could come back! But once the plane landed, I realized how exciting life was, and how lucky I was able to do this. I saw many wonderful things, and in India I met Richard, who is now my husband.”

Back home, she started writing Roadrunner. This novel is about Tara Roberts, who decides to give up her job and travel round the world, and it sounds like it is all a true story about Suzanne. “Tara goes to the same places as me and feels the same about them, but I don’t have her crazy way of behaving or get into danger as she does,” Suzanne explains.

Suzanne’s second book, called Sailing, shows Tara in different funny situations, and unusually for a second book, is just as enjoyable as the first. This is even more surprising when you consider that since the birth of her son, Suzanne has had to find the time for writing while looking after him. “I have to plan things better now,” she says.

Roadrunner is going to be made into a film, a third and final novel about Tara is planned, and Suzanne is still only 29. How does she feel about her future? “I just take things as they come,” she says with a smile.

【題目】 To wear or not to wear masks

In the West, people are taught to wear masks only when they get sick. Masks are seen as a tool to protect sick people and prevent the disease from spreading, so healthy people don’t need to wear them. Therefore, during the novel coronavirus outbreak, overseas Chinese students said that they would be “stared at like a virus spreader” if they go out with a mask.

In Asian countries like China and Japan, there has been a long tradition of mask-wearing. In China, for example, when doctor Wu Liande invented the modern medical mask during the pneumonic plague (肺鼠疫) in 1910, the mask became a symbol of China’s position as a modern, scientific nation, according to Scottish medical anthropologist (人類學(xué)家) Christos Lynteris. The 2003 SARS epidemic again led to the wide use of masks as a form of anti-viral protection in China and elsewhere in East Asia.

In Japan, wearing masks has long been seen as a manner to reassure others when one catches a cold or flu. Some Japanese also turn masks into fashion accessories (配飾), with different colors and patterns to match their clothes. Wearing masks is also a way to “hide” for young women when they don’t have their makeup on.

In more collectivist cultures in Asia, wearing masks might also be a symbol of solidarity during the outbreak, according to Lynteris. “Mask culture in Asia creates a sense of a fate shared, common obligation and civic duty.” People wear masks “to show that they want to stick together” in the face of danger, Lynteris wrote.

1Why don't healthy people in the West wear masks?

A.They don't think masks can prevent disease.B.They think masks are for sick people to wear.

C.Only medical workers need to wear masks.D.Wearing a mask looks funny.

2Masks have been widely used in China since _____.

A.the invention of the modern medical maskB.the pneumonic plague in 1910

C.Christos Lynteris wore one publiclyD.the outbreak of SARS in 2003

3What does Lynteris mean in the last paragraph?

A.People have no sense of duty if they don’t wear masks.

B.Mask culture creates a sense of collective obligation.

C.Asian people are more united in the face of danger.

D.We are a community with a shared future for mankind.

4The purpose of the story is to _____.

A.explain why Westerners don’t wear masks

B.prove the importance of wearing masks during an epidemic

C.how opinions about masks differ between different countries

D.explain the history of masks

【題目】 How much do you know about Chicago, lllinois, in the United States? You might think it’s a big city. And it is Chicago is actually the third most populous city in the US, right after New York City and Los Angeles according to the US 2010 Census. “The Windy City” is Chicago’s most famous nickname (綽號). It is for good reason. The city lies right next to Lake Michigan and heavy gusts (一陣風) of wind blow through the city.

Chicago is very well known for its art and culture. In fact, TripAdvisor says that the Art Institute of Chicago is the No. 1 place to visit in the city. It is not only a school, but also a world—class art museum.

If you don’t feel like visiting a museum, your best choice is to go to Millennium Park. This is one of my personal favorites. This park holds the famous Cloud Gate, and it looks kind of like a big reflective (反光的) bean. Many people enjoy taking photos in its reflection.

Chicago also offers other fun things to do. If you enjoy heights, go visit the famous Willis Tower! You can go up to the top of it and step out onto a glass box. You’ll be standing over the city, but don’t worry — it’s completely safe. Doesn’t Chicago sound like a fun city?

1回答問題If you have one day off in Chicago, what will you do for fun? Why?

2找出劃線單詞“it”所指代的內(nèi)容。

3從文中找出與“The population of Chicago is just smaller than New York and Los Angeles in the US.”意思相同或相近的句子。

4翻譯句子“Chicago is very well known for its art and culture.”
