【題目】 The novel coronavirus (新冠病毒) made this year’s Spring Festival holiday very different for most of us.
Many places in China began a first- level emergency (突發(fā)事件) response to the virus in mid-January, calling for people to stay at home. Following these rules, most people gave up family gatherings during the Spring Festival and canceled any festive celebrations.
It’s the quietest Chinese New Year I’ve ever had,” Xin Jingrong, a 14-year-old student from Nanning, Guangxi said. For the first time in years, Xin’s grandmother had to cancel her trip to Nanning and stay alone in her hometown.
The control measures not only separate many families, but also make daily life inconvenient. Many shops are closed, delivery services are slow, and wearing masks in public has become a must. Although it is inconvenient, people are still showing their understanding and cooperation (合作).
Tong Zexi, a 15-year-old student from Harbin, has not gone out in more than 20 days. “I know I need to protect myself and cause no trouble. In this critical (關(guān)鍵的) tit in time, when one gets sick, many others could be affected.”
Apart from simply following the rules, some people have done amazing things to help fight the outbreak.
On Feb 3, Zhao Junyan, a Junior 2 student from Shanghai, brought 15,000 masks from Indonesia back to China. People’s Daily reported. Zhao, while traveling in Jakarta, collected the masks with his uncle, who works in the city. The 15-year-old donated (捐贈) all of the masks to Cangnan, Zhejiang, his hometown.
“When a country is in trouble, everyone is responsible to help,” Zhao said to the media. “What I have done is what an ordinary Chinese person can possibly do.”

【題目】 Black beauty
My first home was a beautiful meadow with a pound of clear water. There were some large trees near the pond. On one side of the meadow was a field and on the other was the house of our master, Farmer Grey. He was a kind man.
My mother and I had a happy life. She worked during the day. I played with the other young horses and had great fun. At night I lay next to her.
One day, my master sold me to Squire Gordon. He lived with his family in a big house.
“You are a beautiful horse,” he said, “You have a beautiful black coat. I shall call you Black Beauty.”
I learned to carry my master on my back and pull a coach. I learned to wear reins(韁繩) and a bit in my mouth. I did not like them, but all of the horses had to wear them.
My master had two horses. One of them was Ginger. She was not friendly. She bit and kicked people.
Ginger and I pulled a coach together. The coachman’s name was John. Ginger and I worked very hard. We became friends.

Just then a man saw us. “Stop!” he cried.
“The bridge is broken in the middle. If you go on to it, you are all going to drown in the river.”
“Thank god!” said the Squire.

【題目】 How does fake ‘meat’ taste?
What comes to mind when you hear the phrase “space meat”? It sounds quite weird. But in fact, it could very well be the future of the human diet.
A Russian astronaut recently “grew” meat aboard the International Space Station. Yes, you read that right - he grew it using cells provided by an Israeli company called Aleph Farms. But in fact, he was not the first person to create lab-grown meat. Dutch scientist Mark Post grew the first lab meat in 2013.
But why bother growing meat in a lab when we can get the real thing from cows? For one thing, lab-grown meat is healthier. “We gain greater control over what the meat consists of(由……組成), for example its fat content,” Post said in an interview with The Atlantic. Lab-grown meat is also free of the chemicals that are used on farms, such as pesticides(農(nóng)藥) and growth hormones(激素).
Are there other ways to replace(代替) regular meat? McDonalds is trying to do so with the P.L.T., which stands for plant, lettuce and tomato. The first P.L.T. burgers are already being sold in Canada, according to the fast food company.
The “meat” in the P.L.T. is made out of Beyond Meat, a plant-based meat substitute( 替代品 ) created by a company from Los Angeles, US. The company uses pea, rice and bean proteins to produce patties(肉餅) that look and taste like real meat.
Experts doubt whether these products are healthier than real meat. But they have already proven to be a success, with several fast food companies already offering such products on their menus, according to Fox Business.
