There was once a King and he wanted to find out who could paint the best picture of peace. And he would offer a prize to the artist. Many artists tried. The King looked at all the pictures, but there were only two he really liked and he had to choose between them.

One picture was of a calm(平靜的) lake. The lake was a perfect mirror for peaceful mountains all around it. Overhead was a blue sky with white soft clouds. Everyone thought that it was a perfect picture of peace.

The other picture had mountains too. But these were rugged(崎嶇的) and bare(無(wú)遮蔽的). Above was an angry sky. And it was raining and lightening. Down the side of the mountain, a waterfall fell quickly. This did not look peaceful at all.

But when the King looked carefully, he saw behind the waterfall a bush(矮樹叢) growing in a crack(裂縫) in the rock. In the bush a mother bird had built her nest(巢,窩). There, she sat on her nest... in perfect peace.

Which picture do you think won the prize?

The King chose the second picture. “Because,” said the King, “peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work. Peace means to be in the middle of all those things and still be calm in your heart. That is the real meaning of peace.”

1What did the King want the artists to do?

1To paint the best picture of peace.

3Because he thought it had the real meaning of peace.

5Real Meaning of Peace

文章首句“There was once a King and he wanted to find out who could paint the best picture of peace.”(曾經(jīng)有一位國(guó)王,他想找出誰(shuí)可以畫出關(guān)于和平的最佳畫作。) To paint the best picture of peace.

原文“Everyone thought that was a perfect picture of peace.”(每個(gè)人都認(rèn)為這是和平的完美圖景),從這里可以得出每個(gè)人對(duì)第一張圖的觀點(diǎn),故填That was a perfect picture of peace.

原文“Because peace does not mean to be in a place where there is no noise, trouble, or hard work.”(因?yàn)楹推讲⒉灰馕吨跊](méi)有噪音,麻煩或辛勤工作的地方),這句話是國(guó)王做出的解釋,可填“他認(rèn)為這幅畫擁有和平的真實(shí)含義”,填Because he thought it had the real meaning of peace.

4“mean”為“意思是”;“those things”指的是“noise, trouble, or hard work”這些煩擾之事,“be calm in your heart”意思是“內(nèi)心要寧?kù)o,要冷靜”,整合起來(lái),就是:寧?kù)o意味著身處如此多的煩擾之中,而依然能心存安寧。

The Panama Canal --Connecting Oceans

A short canal saves ships thousands of miles

The Panama Canal (巴拿馬運(yùn)河) is an artificial 51-mile waterway in Panama that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. The idea for a Panama Canal dates back to the discovery of the Isthmus of Panama (巴拿馬地峽) by Spanish explorer Vasco De Balboa in 1513. He discovered how narrow it was. Only 80.5 kilometres of land separated the Atlantic from the Pacific! The Spanish surveyed the area in hopes of building a canal. But the local government decided it was impossible.

Fast-forward to 1869, Ferdinand De Lesseps had completed the 163-km-long Suez Canal (蘇伊士運(yùn)河), a waterway linking Europe and Asia. France asked him to repeat his success at Panama. He agreed to have a try. When digging started in 1881, Ferdinand De Lesseps thought building a canal across Panama would be easy. But he didn't realize that digging in a jungle (叢林) would be so dangerous. Ferdinand De Lesseps and his team gave up their project after thousands of workers died from diseases caused by mosquitoes(蚊子). American President Theodore Roosevelt quickly took over where the French crew had left off. He bought the canal property (運(yùn)河的所有權(quán)) and sent a team of workers to finish the project. Led by John Stevens, the American team got rid of the mosquitoes. This effort helped the team of nearly 40,000 workers to stay healthy and productive The team used powerful steam shovels (蒸汽挖土機(jī)) to make a path for the canal. But even with the help of such large equipment(裝備), the work progressed slowly. Finally, after nearly 10 years of non-stop digging, the canal successfully opened in 1914.The story didn't make the headlines, though. The public was focused(專注) on World War I. Therefore the canal wasn't dedicated (舉行落成典禮) until July 12, 1920. Since the canal first opened, more than 960,000 ships have traveled through it. The Panama Canal has become an important link in global(全球性的)shipping. A journey that used to take months now takes two weeks.

1How wide was the Isthmus of Panama which separated the Atlantic from the Pacific?

2Who bought the Panama Canal property?

3What did the team use to make a path for the canal?(in no more than three words)

What can you do when someone hurts you? Most people may be angry or even fight with the one who hurts him or her. But it’s not a good idea. The best way is to forgive(寬。them.

Although it’s not easy for us to forgive people who hurt us, it is possible. “Forgiveness makes you more hopeful. And it’s good for our health,” says Frederic, PhD, the writer of the book called Forgive for God.

But how can we forgive others? It’s really a problem. Let’s see how we can do it? First, think of something beautiful and the people you love. Try to get yourself happy. Second, don’t wait for others to say sorry to you. If the people hurt you, he or she won’t say sorry to you. They may not just want to hurt you or they just don’t see things the same way. Third, try to see things in others’ shoes. You can write a letter to yourself from the offender’s point.(肇事者的觀點(diǎn)) That can make you understand others better and make yourself happier.
