A. Awakening of Insects B. The Beginning of Summer C. Tomb-sweeping Day

D. Minor Heat E. The Beginning of Spring F. Winter Solstice

1 Being a traditional holiday, it is still now celebrated quite often in many areas. Midwinter day is the day in the northern areas with the shortest day and the longest night year-round. After it, daytime will become increasingly longer and the coldest climate will hit all the places on the Northern part of the globe. On that day, it’s a tradition to eat dumplings in the north of China.

2 It is the 11th solar term of the year, which happens in July. It signifies the hottest period is coming but the extreme hot point has yet to arrive. During this time, farmers are devoted to field management. Kidney bean, peanut and so on are growing now, and people water and also prevent the injurious insects.

3It is the third solar term according to the Chinese lunar calendar. When it comes, spring thunder ( ) cracks the sky and everything in nature begins to grow. It means that animals sleeping in winter are awakened by spring thunder and that the earth begins to come back to life. After it, days will get warm, rainfall will increase and nature will change quietly.

4The traditional Chinese lunar calendar divides the year into 24 solar terms. It is the first solar term of the year. This year it begins on Feb 4th and ends on Feb 18th. It lifts the curtain of spring. After that, everything turns green and full of vigor. People clearly see that the daytime is becoming longer and the weather is becoming warmer.

5 It falls in early spring, on the 106th day after the winter solstice. It is a time to remember the dead and honour one’s deceased ancestors and family members. It is a “spring” festival, and it is an occasion for the whole family to leave the home and to sweep the graves of their forebears.

Cyber Boy 5-26-2019 2:15 p.m.

Hi, I’m planning a trip to Europe this summer. I haven’t decided where to go yet, but I’d like to experience Britain and France. And I don’t want to spend too much money. Any ideas?

Esperanto 5-26-2019 2:33 p.m.

I had a tour to Britain last year. It’s a very nice place. I had a great time there. If you get a chance, visit Stratford. That’s the town where Shakespeare lived.

Yoshi 5-26-2019 2:38 p.m.

First you should make sure what you want to do there. Each country in Europe has so much to see. Are you interested in museums and castles( 城堡) ?Or do you want to get to know anything modern?

Cyber Boy 5-26-2019 3:02 p.m.

Yoshi---Good question. I’d like to see some museums, but I also want to try some of famous food in France, and a castle would also be great.

I think an English –France-Germany trip might work well for you. You can do a little bit of everything. That’s wonderful.

Esperanto 5-26-2019 3:38 p.m.

It’s easier to say than to do. It will need a lot of money and take time. Cyber Boy isn’t so rich. I think he’d better go to France first this time and he is still able to travel to England or Germany in the future if possible

【題目】 Why would someone decide to stop eating? We know that the body needs food in order to work well. However, many people fast at some time during their lives. Why is this?

Some people fast for political reasons. In the early 20th century, women in England and the United States weren’t allowed to vote. So many women went on fast. They hoped that fasting would bring attention to it. Mohandas Gandhi, the famous Indian leader, fasted 17 times during his life. For Gandhi, fasting was a powerful political tool. In 1943, he fasted to bring attention to his country’s need for independence. For 21 days, he went without food. Another famous faster was Cesar Chavez. In the 1960s, he fasted for three weeks. Why? His goal was to bring attention to the terrible working conditions of farm workers in the United States.

Fasting is also a practice in many religions(宗教). Every year during the month of Ramadan, which is a religious holiday, Muslims(穆斯林) fast from sunrise to sunset. Many Indians fast at special time, and there was also a fasting holiday in ancient China.

Of course, not everyone fasts for political or religious reasons. People sometimes fast just because it makes them feel better. The American writer Mark Twain thought fasting was the best medicine for common illnesses. Whenever he had a cold or a fever, he stopped eating completely. He said that this always made his cold or fever go away. Another American writer, Upton Sinclair, discovered fasting after years of eating too much and headaches. His first fast lasted for 12 days. During this time, his headaches and stomachaches went away. Sinclair said that fasting also made him more alert and energetic.

Choosing to go without food can be very dangerous. However, that doesn’t stop people from fasting for political, religious, or health reasons.

1The underlined word “fast” in Paragraph 1 most probably means “________”.

A.quicklyB.go on a dietC.refuse to eatD.lose weight

2Mohandas Gandhi fasted in 1943 for ________.

C.the women’s voting rights in Great BritainD.the equal rights of the black people in America

3Which fasting is for health reason?

A.Upton Sinclair fasted for 12 days.B.Mohandas Gandhi fasted in 1943.

C.Cesar Chavez fasted for two weeks.D.Muslims fast from sunrise to sunset.

4What can we learn from the passage?

A.Women like to go on fasting for politics.

B.You will be very famous if you fast for religions.

C.Fasting sometimes would be better for your health.

D.You needn’t take any medicine if you fast when you’re ill.

5What may be the best title of the passage?

A.Reasons for fasting.B.Ways of fasting.

【題目】 Trying to lose weight can be difficult, and while we all know exercise and diet are both basic needs, which one is more important?

If you had to choose, should you be hitting the gym, or eating salads? There are many ways you can burn a few hundred calories (卡路里): running for 20 minutes, an hour of swimming, or singing your favourite song 23 times. But the point is, it takes time to burn a lot of calories even with most tiring activity - not to mention the time spent on the way to the gym, and then back home to clean up.

Now, compare this to the number of calories in a chocolate bar - which is often over 200 calories. You could either walk for about an hour to burn that 200 calories, or you could simply not eat that chocolate bar. Which sounds easier to you? How about running for 30 minutes every day or cutting out those two cans of soda? Many physicians point out that there is a lot of high-sugar, high-fat, high-calorie foods we could cut from our diet, to see weight loss results more quickly. And studies also show that diet does actually play a bigger role in weight loss than exercise. A survey of 2000 children found that the level of physical activity was not the main reason for their weight. And a study of 3000 adults discovered that cutting down calories was connected to greater weight loss than exercise alone.

Of course, exercise has many health advantages besides weight loss, like slowing the aging process and improving mental health. But at the end of the day, if you expect to lose weight, you’re likely to get more bang for your buck if you focus on your diet first.
