The meaning of silence is different among different cultures.

Many people in some Asian cultures think silence is a basic part of communication. When a traditional Chinese or Thai is speaking and suddenly stops, he probably wants the listener to consider what he has said before he continues. Many people may think silence is a sign of respect (尊重), especially to an elder or a person with power (權力).

Western cultures may use silence in other ways. In America, if you keep silent in a conversation, the speaker may think you’re impolite or not listening to them carefully. Russian, French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show they agree with the discussion of the topic. However, Mexicans may keep silent when instructions are given by a person with a lot of power, even though they don’t agree with the instructions.

In our daily life, if we know the exact meaning of one’s silence, it’s quite helpful, too. A man was ill in hospital. One morning, when the nurse said “Hello!” to him, he said “Hello!” back. “How are you feeling now?” the nurse continued. But the man lay in bed and looked at the nurse, saying nothing. “Not well, right? Then I will check it for you, OK? ” the patient was still silent. Then the nurse passed him a cup of warm water. He drank it quickly. After that, the nurse checked up his health. “Mr. Smith, your blood pressure is a little high. But don’t worry, you’ll soon be well again after taking some medicine.” The man smiled and said, “You’re the best nurse I’ve ever met.” You see, this is how silence works.

【題目】閱讀理解七選五 根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容,從短文后的選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多余選項。

Language teachers often offer advice to language learners: “Read as much as you can in the new language.” “1” “Live with people who speak the language.” “Don’t translate—try to think in he new language.” “Learn as a child would learn; play with the language.”

But what does a successful language learner do? Language learning research shows that successful language learners are similar in many ways.

First of all, successful language learners are independent learners. 2 They try to find their own way to learn the language. Instead of waiting for the teacher to explain, they try to find the patterns and the rules for themselves. They are good guessers. When they guess wrong, they guess again. They try to learn from their mistakes.

3 Therefore, successful learners do not wait for a chance to use the language; they look for such a chance. They find people who speak the language and they ask these people to correct them when they make a mistake. They will try anything to communicate. They are not afraid to repeat what they hear or to say strange things; they are willing to make mistakes and try again.

4 They want to learn the language because they are interested in the language and the people who speak it. It is necessary for them to learn the language in order to communicate with these people and to learn from them.

5 If you are a successful language learner, you have probably been learning independently, actively, and purposefully. On the other hand, if your language learning has not been very successful, you may try some of the techniques (方法) mentioned above.

A. Successful language learning is active learning.

B. What kind of language learner are you?

C. Who knows the secret to language learning?

D. Practice speaking the language every day.

E. They do not depend on the book or the teacher.

F. Good language learners are not afraid of making mistakes.

G. Finally, successful language learners are learners with a purpose.

【題目】 World Book Day has arrived! It is celebrated on April 23 in most countries, but in the UK, it is usually in March. This year, our school invited a writer to talk to us about her life as an author.

The author’s name is Jo Cotterill. She is an English author who lives in Oxfordshire with her husband and daughters. She has won many awards for writing books for children and teenagers.

In her speech, Cotterill told us a lot about her childhood, as well as her love for unicorns (獨角獸), her previous job as an actress and, of course, her books. She also showed us some of her award-winning books and described their plots (情節(jié)) for us. I was fascinated by her book A Library of Lemons. It is a story about a girl, Calypso, whose father stops believing in friendship and love after his wife dies. All he believes in are books – he teaches his daughter to close her heart and only love books as well.

As you can see from the book’s title, Cotterill likes to play with words and invent new titles for her books. In fact, her writing career started with inventive (別出心裁的) titles. She said that sometimes she would read in bed on a Sunday and think about interesting titles for new books. She has another book called A Storm of Strawberries. Do you think this title is creative? I simply loved Cotterill’s talk. It inspired me to take up my pen again and keep writing.

1Which of the following is NOT true about Jo Cotterill?

A.She gave a speech at the author’s school this year.

B.She has written books for children and teenagers.

C.She told the students a lot about herself during her speech.

D.She has won many awards for acting.

2What did Jo Cotterill do before she became a writer?

A.A teacher.B.A doctorC.An actressD.A housewife.

3The book A Library of Lemons is about _____.

A.friendship and love

B.Calypso and her father

C.the loss of a family member

D.advice for choosing books

4What is special about Cotterill as a writer?

A.She writes books that are based on real stories.

B.She likes to give creative titles to her books.

C.She enjoys giving speeches about her books.

D.She has a special interest in fruit.

5Which do you think is the best title of the passage?

【題目】 In Singapore, primary and high school students take outdoor-skills courses as part of their studies. They are usually three to five days long and include rope and rock climbing, going to sea in a small boat, sleeping in a tent at night, taking long walks in the forest, and learning to make a fire. It's real life. One careless mistake could make someone get really hurt. Are those outdoor skills really important?

Minister of Education Ng Chee Meng says that the outdoor courses help students develop skills like critical thinking (批判性思維), teamwork, and good communication — abilities that are necessary for work and life. He believes that these skills are as important as traditional subjects. Students need to learn from books, but for some lessons, reading isn't as useful as doing.

What do the students think? Angelique, a student from Singapore, went for a boat trip in the sea.“It helped me to grow stronger,” she says. She felt nervous because it was stormy that day. There were moments when she felt afraid and hopeless. But she remembered that“smooth seas never made a skilled sailor (水手)” and felt brave enough to continue against the storm.“I am thankful for this amazing chance,” she says.

Right now, students attend the courses with groups from their own school. After 2020, however, all students will do the course in groups from several different schools. One student said it this way, “Nothing's impossible.”And that's a great lesson to learn.
