What are fossils?
Fossils are the remains of plants or animals. For such remains to be considered fossils, scientists have decided they have to be over 10,000 years old. The word fossil comes from the Latin word “fossilis”, which means, “dig up”. Fossils can be divided into “body fossils” and “trace(痕跡) fossils”. Body fossils are the remains of a plant or animal's body. Trace fossils are the remains of the activity of an animal, such as footprints, egg shells, and nests.
How are fossils formed?
Some animals were quickly covered after their death by sediment(沉淀物) like earth, mud or sand. Over time, the parts of the animals that didn't rot (usually the harder parts like bones and teeth) were covered in the newly formed sediment. Then, a lot of chemical changes happened to the animals bodies. Water with minerals(礦物質(zhì)) went into the bone and took the place of the chemicals in the bone with rock-like minerals. In the end we get a heavy, rock-like copy of the original object - a fossil. There weren't any changes in size and shape when an object changed into a fossil, but the fossil of a bone doesn't have any bone in it! It is chemically more like a rock! According to scientists, fossils have been found on every continent(大陸) on Earth.

(3)According to the last paragraph, the fossil is as ______ as the original object.
A.heavy
B.big
C.old
D.clean
(4)We can know that ______ from the passage.
A.scientists think that the fossils may have a history of 100 centuries.
B.people haven't found any fossil on the continent of Africa.
C.we can find some real bones in the fossils of a bone.
D.there are many kinds of sediment in the fossils.
(5)This passage most probably comes from ______.
A.an advertisement
B.a medical magazine
C.a science book
D.a notice

(1)D
(2)C
(3)B
(4)A
(5)C

Body fossils are the remains of a plant or animal's body. Trace fossils are the remains of the activity of an animal, such as footprints, egg shells, and nests.

(2)根據(jù)文章第二段信息:Water with minerals(礦物質(zhì)) went into the bone and took the place of the chemicals in the bone with rock-like minerals.

There weren't any changes in size and shape when an object changed into a fossil, but the fossil of a bone doesn't have any bone in it!

For such remains to be considered fossils, scientists have decided they have to be over 10,000 years old.

What are fossils? How are fossils formed?

China has been famous around the world since ancient times. In the past, we had the Four Great Inventions. Nowadays, more inventions and creations have made China stronger and greater in the world.

On May 5th, 2017, at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, China's first large homemade jet airliner(噴氣式客機(jī)), the C919, took off successfully for the first time. It has taken about ten years for the scientists and researchers to make this Chinese dream come true, It's a pride of the whole nation. So far, more than 23 companies have already ordered 570 C919 planes from China. But we still have a long way to go before the C919 carries passengers by 2020. It also faces the challenge of competing with the Airbus A320 and the new Boeing B737.

What's more, China is working on the new high-speed trains with the highest speed of 400 km/h. It will be ready by 2020. The new trains are expected to push area cooperation(合作) and create new business for China and foreign countries. Many countries, especially the ones in Central Asia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Eastern Europe, are planning to build high-speed rail lines or to improve their railways with the help of China. What is a hurricane?
You may already know that hurricanes are storms that can cause devastating (毀滅性的) waves, wind, and rain. They happen during “Hurricane Season,” which is from June 1st until November 30th in the Atlantic Ocean and from May 15th until November 30th in the Pacific Ocean.

Types of Hurricanes
There are five types of hurricanes, which are based on wind speeds. The categories help people know how much damage a hurricane may cause because the greater the wind speed, the more dangerous the storm. For example, a Category 5 hurricane has winds over 155 miles per hour, which are strong enough to destroy the buildings along the shorelines completely.
Hurricane Dangers
When a hurricane happens together with heavy rainfall, there can be a devastating flood. The centre of a hurricane is called the eye. While most of a hurricane has dangerously strong winds, the eye is actually a calm area in the storm. When the eye of a hurricane passes over land, people might think that it's over, but before long the wind and rain increase again as the second part of the hurricane moves through.
Hurricane Safety Tips
There is no way to stop a hurricane or make it change direction, so if you ever find yourself in the path of a hurricane, be sure to remember the following safety tips.
Be sure you have a radio, batteries, fresh drinking water, and enough food.
Tell neighbours, friends, and family members your emergency plans. Tell them where you'll go if you need to leave your home.
If you live near the ocean, leave your home and travel to a safe place. You could stay with a friend or a family member, in a hotel/motel, or in an emergency shelter area.
Stay inside during the storm. You could be seriously injured if you go outside.
