【題目】Travelers' tales

Every year, a magazine called Executive Travel organizes a competition to find the best airline of the year. Travelers from all over the world are invited to vote (投票) for the most punctual (準(zhǔn)時的), the safest and the friendliest airline. The competition also invites them to tell their most horrible stories during their travels. Now let’s read some travelers’ tales of bad flying experiences.

One traveler shared his story which happened on a certain African airline. Even if some passengers had boarding cards, they couldn’t still get the seats. They complained and shouted at the airport. Finally, the flight attendants solved the problem by setting a funny rule. Those passengers who ran fastest around the plane twice could get the seats at last.

An overbooked flight that was going from Heathrow Airport to America gave another traveler a bit of a shock. Dressed only in trousers, a shirt and socks, the traveler had been allowed by the flight attendants to leave the aircraft to see if he could get a workmate aboard. But when he returned a few minutes later, he found the plane closed up and about to start moving --- with his shoes, wallet, passport and luggage on board. He knocked heavily on the door and then was allowed to get back inside.

Luggage is also a rich source of horror stories. There was the unlucky traveler who left Chicago where the temperature was minus (零下) 11 degrees centigrade. He was going to attend an important meeting in Dallas where the temperature was as high as 26.7 degrees centigrade. Unfortunately, his suitcase had gone to Los Angeles and wasn’t able to be sent to him before the meeting. So he had to__________________________________________________________.

【題目】

Do you ever throw away food at home? Have you ever thought about what happens to the food that shops and supermarkets don’t sell? Well, you might be shocked (震驚) to find out that nearly one third of food produced for human gets lost or wasted. What’s more, around 800 million people in the world do not have enough food to lead a healthy life.

Many people in the UK and across the world are trying to do something about this imbalance and make use of thrown-out food that can be perfectly eaten. For example, there is a cafe in Leeds (UK) whose meals are all created using unsold food from supermarkets, including a lot of vegetables, fruit, fish and other things. This unwanted food is turned into delicious soups and all kinds of dishes that feed the hungry people of Leeds. Customers simply pay what they can afford, or help with the washing up. In just ten months, 10,000 people were fed at this cafe, using twenty tons of unwanted food!

Also, last year the UK’s first food waste supermarket opened. The supermarket is near Leeds and works on a “pay as you feel”; customers pay whatever they want for the produce. The stock (庫存) changes daily but you can usually find things such as fresh vegetables, fruit and milk there. Some low-income families have said that it has changed their lives.

“Fuel for School” is another food waste project. Surplus (多余的) food from supermarkets such as vegetables, fruit and bread is used to feed hungry schoolchildren whose families may not be able to afford to buy them lunch.

I lived in Leeds for three years, and have had lunch at a food waste cafe, and it was delicious. I couldn’t believe that it was all food that supermarkets had thrown away! I have also taken part in projects such as “Foodcycle”, using supermarkets’ unwanted food to cook meals for poor people.

More cafes like this are being opened in other parts of the UK, and it is now becoming popular in the world. I think this is an amazing act as food waste is one of the world’s biggest problems. I also believe that the law should be changed, so that supermarkets don’t throw away so much perfectly good food!

1800 million people in the world can’t live a healthy life because of ______.

A. unsold food B. unwanted food

C. being unable to work D. being short of food

2According to the passage, the writer agrees that ______.

A. buying the waste food can protect the environment

B. all the people in the world make use of waste food

C. food waste in the world can be solved by the UK soon

D. the government should make the law to stop food waste

3What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?

A. To encourage people to save food.

B. To introduce some supermarkets in the UK.

C. To share his personal experience in saving food.

D. To explain why he cooked meals for poor people.
