How has technology made your life easier? When you go to a shopping mall, you can enjoy free Wi-Fi there. When you want to take a taxi, you can book one with your phone. In fact, all of these things can be seen as the first building blocks of a smart city.
The idea of a smart city was first suggested by tech company IBM in 2010. Generally, a smart city is a city that uses digital (電子的) technology, such as 5G networks and the “internet of things”, to improve urban planning, save money and resources (資源), and make our lives more convenient.
Cities like Boston, Amsterdam and Copenhagen are already using smart technology to improve public services. In the US cities of Boston and Baltimore, smart trash bins can sense how full they are and tell workers when they need to be cleaned. In Amsterdam, traffic is monitored (監(jiān)測(cè)) and adjusted according to real-time data gathered from sensors around the city. There are fewer traffic jams.
Smart cities will allow us to save resources. By using sensors and 5G networks to check the usage of water, gas and electricity, city managers can figure out how to use these resources more efficiently. For example, water and gas pipes (管道) could remind repair workers when there is a leak (泄漏). Air pollution could be more closely monitored, too.
Of course, it will take time to build the smart cities of the future. But since we’ve already seen successful examples, it won’t be long until more cities join in. Tech Republic estimates (估計(jì)) that by 2050, about 60 percent of people worldwide will live in smart cities.

That bottle of water you paid $ 1 to $ 3 for may contain (包含) tiny pieces of plastic, according to a new report. A recent study tested 259 water bottles from 11 brands sold across nine countries, including the United States, and found that 93% of those tested contained microplastics (微塑料) pollution.
Sherri Mason, a researcher of the State University of New York said that 65% of the plastic pieces were “chips” of plastic, and contained the plastic which was used to make some bottle cups.
“I think it is coming through the process of bottling the water,” Mason said. “I think that most of the plastic that we are seeing is coming from the bottle itself, it is coming from the cup, it is coming from the industrial process of bottling the water.”
Researchers remind that it’s unclear what influence microplastics can have on the human body. And, microplastics have been found in everything, ranging from fish and shelllish (貝類) sold in the supermarket to tap water.
The International Bottled Water Association President and CEO Joe Doss said in a research, “The study isn’t based on science, and the study’s findings do nothing more than unnecessarily scare customers. Customers can remain confident that bottled water products, like all food and drinks, are strictly regulated (管理) by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration are safe for users. The bottled water industry is always trying to provide customers with the safest and highest quality products.”
The World Health Organization told BBC that it is doing a survey on the hidden risks of drinking bottled water.
