【題目】 After the news of Zhang Chengliang’s death was announced this week, sanitation workers in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province were lost in great pain.
Zhang was the owner of a noodle restaurant that for the past five years has offered sanitation workers more than 53000 free bowls of noodles for breakfast during the coldest months of the year.
Zhang died of an illness at the age of 57 last month, according to a piece of news which was spread widely.
“I couldn’t believe that,” said Meng Yanjun,a local sanitation worker. She recalled the last time she ate in Zhang’s restaurant—a bowl of noodles with meat and a fried egg. “Zhang wouldn’t take money from me. It was freezing outside, but my heart was warmed.” As a sanitation worker, she often gets up early in the morning and stands at the roadside to eat cold steamed stuffed buns or some bread for breakfast.
On a window of Zhang’s restaurant hangs a board, which says,“When you face difficulties, you can have a free bowl of noodles here.” He even promised to give away 1 yuan from each bowl of noodles he sold.
“Sanitation workers make our cities cleaner and more beautiful. They are worth what I am doing for them,” Zhang said earlier. “Sometimes they are too shy to enter our restaurant. We would offer to invite them.”
Over the years,Zhang’s spirit has encouraged hundreds of volunteers who help boil noodles and serve customers. Besides, people at home and abroad have given away eggs, noodles and vegetables. “Now though Zhang is dead, his spirit will be passed on by us.”said one of the volunteers.

【題目】 It is hard to know what babies want. They can’t talk, walk or even point at what they are thinking about.
However, new-born babies begin to develop language skills long before they begin speaking. And compared to adults, they develop these skills more quickly. People have a hard time learning new languages as they grow older, but babies have the ability to learn any language easily.
For a long time, scientists have tried to explain how such young children can learn difficult grammatical rules and sounds of a language. Now, researchers are getting a better idea of what is happening in the brains the young language learners. The new information might help kids with learning problems as well as adults who want to learn new languages. It might even help scientists who are trying to design computers that can communicate as humans do.
Most babies say “goo goo” and “ma ma” by 6 months of age, and most children speak in full sentences by age 3. For years, scientists have wondered how the brains of young children find out how to communicate by using languages .With help from new technologies, scientists are now discovering that babies begin life with the ability to learn any language. They get into touch with other people, listen to what they say and watch their movements very closely. That is why they quickly master the languages they hear the most often.
Studies show that ,up to about 6 months of age, babies can learn all the sounds that make up all the languages in the world. Starting at around 6 months, a baby’s brain focuses on the most common sounds it hears. Then, children begin to reply only to the sounds of the languages they hear the most.
In a similar way older people recognize the patterns that make up the rules of their native language. In English, for example, children who are about 18 months old start that words which end up with “-ing” or“-ed” are usually verbs and that verbs are action words.

【題目】 Alex knew colors and shapes. He learned about 150 English words. With his language ability he made himself known as perhaps the world’s most famous talking bird.
But Alex,a parrot, died two weeks ago when he was 31. Irene,a psychologist(心理學(xué)家) at Harvard University, studied and worked with the parrot for nearly 30 years.
In 1977,Irene,then an excellent student in chemistry at Harvard, bought Alex from a pet store. At that time, scientists were not quite sure whether birds could learn to communicate with humans.
But using the methods of teaching. Irene helped Alex to learn about 150 words, and to count small numbers,as well as colors and shapes.
In experiments,Irene would give Alex a small reward, like a grape. Alex learned to ask for the grape by watching what the trainer was doing to get it. The researchers then worked with the bird to help him with pronunciation.
Alex showed a surprising ability to learn. For example, when he was shown a blue paper circle. he could tell what color the paper was. what shape it was,and after touching it,what it was made of.
