Justin

I’m from Romania. China is really a great country and its high-speed railways are very fast, convenient and tidy. It takes me less than 6 hours from Beijing to Shanghai by train. It saves a lot of time and it’s cheaper than airplane. I hope we will have high-speed railways in our country someday.

My life in Beijing is quite different from that in India. Here in China, I can pay for almost everything by Zhi Fu Bao. Yesterday I got a 4.5-yuan envelop and I bought a cup with it. However, in India, if you don’t take a wallet with you, you’ll be in a tough spot.

How do you like your school? Have you ever written to your headmaster to express your idea? Here are some letters written by students from different schools.

Luke, 14, from Jiangsu:

I will give the suggestion about our school uniform. In our school, we students have to wear school uniform every day. But the yellow and green uniform looks really dark and old. It can’t stand for young and lively spirit. We can add some red and orange colors and make a new type of uniform. I hope our headmaster will think about it.

Danny, 14, from Zhejiang:

I have two suggestions for my headmaster. First of all, I think we should have more hobby classes in science, such as plane model making class and computer programming class. And second, I hope we can have more PE lessons or more time for physical exercise. After all, health comes first.

Sam, 15, from Shanxi:

I’d like to say “thank you” to our headmaster. About one week ago, I got a bad cold after playing basketball. Our headmaster came to see me after he knew about it. I really want to thank him for that.

Helen, 14, from Shandong:

I want to talk about the possibility of personal classes. Now many middle schools are trying the personal class system. I think there’s something good for it. First, it is more effective (有效的) because students can choose their lessons they want to take. Also, it is good for exercise. We don’t have to just stay in one classroom all the time. What’s more, we can communicate more with new friends.

Winnie sat outside the Headmistress's office waiting to be called in. She wished she had not been caught down by the river at lunchtime. But it was too late now.

That morning, Winnie happened to be in the playground with a group of girls from the ninth grade. She liked hanging out with the older girls. She felt more important when she was with them. She especially admired Vicky. Vicky was always breaking the school rules, but somehow managed to get away with it.

Vicky told the group of girls she pinched a packet of cigarettes* from her dad's pocket. She invited them to follow her to the river at lunchtime for a smoke. They sat under the bridge and Vicky passed round the packet of cigarettes. Winnie had never smoked before. It tasted awful. The other girls started making fun of her. Then Vicky told Winnie to steal a packet of cigarettes from her dad and bring it to school for them to smoke. Winnie knew this was wrong but wanted so much to be part of the group. So she said they could count on her to bring a packet the next day.

Then, suddenly, before they could hide their cigarettes, Mr. Jackson, her class teacher was standing next to them. He was furious. Vicky threw the packet of cigarettes into Winnie and said, "She gave them to us. She stole them from her dad." But Mr. Jackson had seen and heard everything. He told them to go straight back to school and wait for him outside the Headmistress's office.

Now, sitting outside the Headmistress's office, Winnie knew she would be punished but in her heart she also knew the punishment was a stitch in time. She would never try another cigarette and would never again get mixed up with students like Vicky. Winnie was beginning to have second thoughts about Vicky. Because of Vicky, she was in trouble, too.

The door opened and Vicky came out. She was crying. Winnie had never seen Vicky cry before. She looked so different, so weak, so unimportant. In a flash Winnie realized Vicky was not a very nice person after all.
