【題目】Puzzled face asks for help
Think about the last time you did something that you found difficult. Was it working out a puzzle or working hard on your math homework?
Can you remember the expression you had on your face? Most people will press their lips together and frown when they are doing something they find difficult. This is normally seen as a sign of effort. Now we’ve found that it can also say more than that.
A recent study at the University of Portsmouth in England suggests that the human expression of effort and frustration(挫折) is our way of asking others for help.
Scientists at the university gave children and chimpanzees(黑猩猩) an impossible puzzle to work out. When the children couldn’t work out the puzzle, their faces expressed determination and effort. The chimpanzees’ did not.
Humans and chimpanzees have many facial expressions that share the same meaning. A human smile is the same as a chimpanzee showing its teeth in happiness.
Scientists believe that over time, humans have evolved(進(jìn)化) to use this facial expression to ask for help. We have also learned to respond to it by offering help.
According to Dr Albert Mehrabian, a well-known professor of psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), only 7% of human communication happens through words and 55% is through body language. Therefore, understanding expressions is second nature to human beings.
With this in mind, next time you see a person with a frustrated expression, listen to your heart and stop to lend them a hand.
【1】【1】What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Frowning??? B. The expression??? C. Something difficult??? D. A sign of effort

A. they need help??? B. they can do things themselves
C. they will give up??? D. they want to be alone.
【3】【3】Which of the following about the study is TRUE?
A. Scientists gave the chimpanzees an easy puzzle.
B. The chimpanzees smiled as they worked out the puzzle.
C. The chimpanzees’ face didn’t show determination or effort.
D. The chimpanzees used other expressions to ask for help.
【4】【4】According to Dr Albert Mehrabian, we learn that ____________.
A. body language is very important in human communication
B. people don’t like to use words to communicate
C. human expressions are not a kind of body language
D. words can’t help much in communication

【題目】When I was a little girl,I wanted to leave school and have my own life. The only way was to work in the local paper factory in my town. When we arrived at the factory gate,my father spoke to the guard and one minute later we were inside. I walked around the factory looking at the building and the workers, listening to the noise. It was terrible. I ran back to my father and said,“I want to go home.” He asked me,“What do you think of the factory?” “Too bad,” I answered.
I went back to school the next day thinking about studying hard so I could get into a good college. I enjoyed studying English so that I decided to major in (主修) languages at college. 【題目】Dealing with sleep-away Camp
I have never been away from home, at least not for more than three days, much less two whole weeks. When I got the chance to go to Journalism Camp, I was afraid. Of the 19 other students there, I Knew no one.
What if I had to go home during camp time because I wouldn't be able to get used to the new situation? What if my roommate and I don't get along? How do I even use a washing machine?
Well, after the first night, nearly all of my problems were solved. The students were amazing, and my roommate was perfect. She knew how to do crazy braids(辮子) with my long hair and she loved to listen to me talk loudly! I couldn't have asked for more.
The two weeks nearly flew by, and I learned to take responsibility for myself: washing clothes, cleaning and other things like that.
However, in the process I didn’t realize how tied I had become to the usual order of waking up early, running to get to the newsroom in time, and coming back to a large room full of friends who shared similar feelings as I did.
On the last day, I couldn’t get myself to turn in my room keys. It couldn't be over. I become emotionally tied really easily, so it was hard for me to pull away. I couldn't push away my tears. Leaving camp Just left me empty.
I wasn't having the “blues”, but I felt really sad about leaving. Returning home, I was in the state of disappointment for a few days. I kept to myself, sleeping through most of the day so I wouldn’t have time to look back.
I needed to get used to life at home again. This was my challenge. I was lucky to have the two-week experience, but I had to learn to accept that not all things last forever.
I could still keep in touch with my new friends while continuing on with the rest of my summer. I know I will go through the same experience when I leave high school after senior year. High school life will never return after graduation, but I can still keep in touch with my friends and look forward to other experiences I will have.

【題目】Many people take running as a way to keep fit. They like to run in hot weather and enjoy the feeling of being wet through with sweat while running. Cold weather during winter months, with low temperatures and freezing cold winds, may keep many people from running in the open air.
However, a new study shows that the drop in temperature is a good reason to run. In fact, running in cold weather helps improve one’s performance. Many runners might find it easier to run in winter than in hot weather.
Lower temperatures reduce stress on the body. When you run in cold weather, your heart rate is lower. And the body needs less water on a cold day than in warm weather because dehydration levels are lower in winter than in warmer conditions.
John Brewer is a professor of applied sports science at ST. Mary’s University in London. For this study, he and other researchers put a group of people into a room where summer and winter weather conditions are recreated. The test subjects, were asked to run 10,000 meters under both conditions and their biological measurements were recorded and studied.
From the study, every movement runners make produces heat. The heat can be really damaging unless the body can lose it. One way in which people lose heat is by sweating. The body loses heat through droplets of sweet. The body also loses it by transporting the blood to the surface of the skin and it puts more stress on the heart, particularly in hot conditions because it’s much harder to lose heat when the outside environment is warm. As the result shows running in hot temperatures results in 6 percent higher heart rates.?
When running in cold conditions, the body does not have to work hard to pump blood to the skin surface. Therefore, it requires less energy. The most important thing for people who run in cold conditions is to wear the right clothing. Keep as dry as possible when exercising in low temperatures. Wear mittens on your hands instead of gloves. Wear more than one layer of clothing to keep sweat away from your skin. So don’t let winter weather keep you indoors. Simply get ready for the low temperatures and start running.
【1】Why do most people dislike running outdoors in winter?
A. It’s too cold.??? B. It’s hard to run.
C. It’s too easy to sweat.??? D. It’s bad for the heart rate.

A. water??? B. heat??? C. stress??? D. blood
【3】Why did John Brewer make a group of people run in a room?
A. It was easier to be reduce stress.
B. It was easier to produce heat.
C. It was easier to recreate different weather conditions.
D. It was easier to record their biological measurements.
【4】What should people wear while running in cold winter?
A. A hat.??? B. Gloves.
C. More clothing.??? D. More than one layer of clothing.
【5】What’s the purpose of the passage?
A. To tell people not to run in summer.
B. To describe how runners run in winter.
