Why so many fires?

California is burning! Wildfires have spread across the US State since Oct 23 and smoke has filled its skies.

Take the Kincade Fire in northern California for example. It forced ( 使 ) 200,000 people to e1its path within one week. The state’s largest power (電力) company cut power to about 206,000 homes in order to s2 more fires from breaking out, CBS News reported.

California has seen many wildfires in recent years. Nine of the 10 biggest fires have happened since 2000, i3five since 2010, according to The New York Times.

Why is this? California has the perfect wildfire c4, Park Williams, a US climate expert (氣候?qū)<?/span>), told The New York Times. It has dry air and high temperatures from spring through late fall. At the same time, seasonal winds blow across the state every year, causing the wildfires to spread q5and last for weeks.

Global warming has also made the fires worse in recent years. It has dried out the state’s trees and o6 plant life, causing them to burn more easily.

H 7have played a role as well. Burning campfires, garbage debris ( ),and cigarette butts (煙頭) can easily cause wildfires. For example, one fire started last year when a car got a flat tire (漏氣的輪胎). The car’s body met the road and sent out sparks (火花 ), starting a f8.

Lightning strikes (雷擊) and volcanic eruptions (火山爆發(fā)) can also cause wildfires. However, people have caused 90 percent of California’s wildfires, according to the US National Park Service.

More about wildfires

Wildfires often happen in wooded areas in the US, Canada and Australia. They are also k 9 as forest fires or grass fires in Australia.

Wildfires can burn at over 900 and reach heights of more than 50 meters. They can move at speeds of up to 23 kilometers an hour, burning e10 – trees, brush, homes, even people – in their path.

【題目】 That was the end of the term. When we were studying something about DNA, Mr. Hunt, the science teacher, told us to prepare for a debate(辯論). I was a little worried. We found we were against a group which was filled with native English-speaking students, while there was only one American boy in our group. However, we didn’t dread the challenge. Our topic was “Should college accept students based on their DNA traits(特征)?”We opposed this thought.

I took the role of Q&A. When I went back to the dormitory(寢室), I asked for help from an experienced debater in college. He taught me how to express ideas, search for information on different websites and list the points.

After a week’s preparation, I stood on the stage with a well-thought plan in my mind. Then I noticed that the hope of our group, the American boy, was sick that day. His position of first speaker was empty. I had to take his position and plan my materials and data again. Before the debate, I kept asking myself what if I couldn’t understand what they were saying, and what if they included some idioms(慣用語)that I didn’t even know. I was even nervous. But when I stood in front of the whole class, I saw trust and encouragement from my group members. I started to cool down. I fluently stated our opinions and asked questions. When our opponents(對手)had their opening speech, I wrote down some points to retort(反駁)them. Although Mr. Hunt didn’t tell me who won the debate, I believe I have already learned a lot. Never lose confidence and you will surely win.
