【題目】 Do you have a lucky number? What is it? Many people have a special number that they hope will bring them good luck.

In Chinese culture, some numbers are believed to be lucky or unlucky based on the Chinese word that the number sounds similar to.

For example, the word for the number 8 sounds similar to the word for “making a fortune”. So, people consider it a very lucky number. Some people will even spend a lot of money to have 8s in their phone number or on their vehicle license plate(車牌照)number. The opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics began at 8:08 pm on Aug 8, 2008.

The number 9 is also a lucky number because of its connection to the emperors of China. There were nine dragons on emperors’ robes (龍袍)and Chinese myth held that the dragon had nine children. The number 9 also stands for “l(fā)ong lasting”. That’s why a man always proposes(求婚)to a woman with 99 or 999 roses.

So what’s an unlucky number in China? One example is 4. Many Chinese people see 4 as an unlucky number because it sounds similar to the character for “death”.

Because of this, many buildings skip(跳過)the fourth floor, and simply call it the fifth floor. In Hong Kong, some buildings even skip all floors numbered with 4, such as 4, 14, 24, 34 and all 40-49 floors. Some buildings also skip the 13th floor, as this is considered an unlucky number in the West. As a result, a building whose highest floor is 50 may have only 35 physical floors.

1What makes Chinese people believe a number is lucky or unlucky?

A.The shape of the number.B.The sound of the number.

C.The history of the number.D.The spelling of the number.

2Why will people spend a lot of money to have 8s in phone numbers or on vehicle license plate numbers?

A.Because they believe 8 will make them live forever.B.Because they believe 8 will bring good luck.

C.Because 8 is easy to remember.D.Because 8 stands for fashion.

3According to the passage, how do you like the number 9 in Chinese culture?

A.terribleB.crazyC.positiveD.worried

4A building whose highest floor is 60 in Hong Kong might only have________ physical floors if it skips all the unlucky numbers.

A.35B.44C.50D.60

5What is the story mainly about?

A.Lucky and unlucky numbers in Western culture.B.Meanings of different lucky numbers.

C.Meanings of different unlucky numbers.D.Lucky and unlucky numbers in Chinese culture.

【題目】 At night, you fall asleep while listening to beautiful music. In the morning, you are woken up by the singing of birds outside. You can enjoy all of these things because of one important organ—the ears. March 3 is Ear Care Day. It helps us remember the importance of our ears and encourages us to take good care of them.

You may wonder: how do the ears work? The ear has three different parts: the outer ear, the middle ear, and the inner ear. The outer ear is the part you can see. It collects sound around you. The sound then travels down to the middle ear, the inner ear and then to your brain.

Your ears never stop working, even when you are asleep! Your ears continue hearing sounds, but your brain just ignores(忽視) them. That’s why you may sometimes wake up suddenly in the middle of the night—your brain hears something, but you don’t know what it is, since you are asleep.

More surprisingly, ears even help with tasting food. Of course, you don’t actually taste food with your ears. But there are nerves running through the middle ear that connect the tongue(舌頭) to the brain. If something happens to your ears, you may have a hard time telling different tastes apart, according to the website of People’s Daily.

The ears are truly important organs with many functions(功能,作用). You should make sure to protect your own ears as well as you can. There are some Dos and Don’ts you need to know.

First of all, when the sun is shining, wear some sunscreen on your ears. And during winter, cover your ears with a hat or a scarf. Secondly, dry your ears with a towel after swimming or having a bath. If you feel water in your ear, shake your head a little bit. This can help you get the water out of your ear.

Besides, don’t listen to music on your earphones for too long. Follow the 60: 60 rule: listen to music at 60 percent of the maximum volume(最大音量) for no more than 60 minutes a day. Also, it’s not a good idea to share earphones with friends. When you have only one earphone, you might turn the volume up too high, since one earphone isn’t loud enough.

1Which is TRUE according to the passage?

A.The outer ear is the most important part.

B.We can still know what is happening when we are asleep.

C.We’d better not use one earphone when we listen to music.

D.We can still taste food with ears if our tongue doesn’t work.

2We can protect our ears by_________.

A.wearing no sunscreen on sunny days

B.listening to the singing of birds outside

C.washing our ears with a towel after swimming

D.covering our ears with a scarf in cold weather

3What are paragraph 2, 3 and 4 mainly about?

A.Why we celebrate Ear Care Day.B.The protections of ears.

C.Why we can hear sound.D.The functions of ears.

【題目】 Parking has been a problem for drivers for a long time in Taizhou. The Transportation Department is mapping out a new plan for the city’s parking system. There are about 100 thousand cars on the road in Taizhou but only enough parking space to provide room for 15 percent of these vehicles. It is no wonder that local drivers get so worried trying to find a place to park.

The number of the private car owners is becoming larger and larger. In March, the city sent out 1,500 private car licenses, the highest number of licenses ever sent out in a month. And prices rose to over 2000yuan, 500 more than in February. Industry experts say this suggests that local people want to have their own cars.

By the year 2020, the number of cars in Taizhou will probably reach 200 thousand. If one parking lot is for each car, then a lot of parking space should be built for these vehicles. The center of Taizhou is most short of parking space. However, experts point out that simply building more parking lots in these areas is not practical and doesn’t solve the problem. The idea of “ Park & Ride ” system. This has been suggest means that underground train and city train should be developed quickly. Drivers can leave their vehicles in car parks near subway and bus stations and then they can ride public transport to go to the city center. Based on this idea, the city will cut down the number of parking lots in the city center and need higher parking fees. Meanwhile it will build more parking areas near main subway and bus stops.

2About ________ drivers can find places to park their cars in Taizhou now.

A.85,000B.100,000C.15,000D.200,000

3What can we infer from the second paragraph?

A.The city sent out more private licenses in February.B.Less and less people bought cars in March.

C.The city sent out less private licenses in March.D.More and more people are going to buy cars.

4According to the idea of a “ Park & Ride ” system, the city will ________.

A.send out more private car licensesB.build more parking lots near bus stops

Subject: Hello from Edinburgh!

Dear Aleks,

This is my second month in Edinburgh — can you believe it? I love it here. I’m so happy I decided to go to university in Scotland.

Life is very different here. I share an apartment (公寓) with two other students. Each day I get up at around 7:30 am and walk to the university alone. On the way I eat breakfast in a coffee shop. At university I have classes all morning. My classmates come from all over the world — there are lots of Chinese and Nigerian people. We all have lunch together in the dining hall — usually sandwiches. In the afternoon I read books in the library. In the evening I go to the cinema or go for a walk around the town with my classmates, except on Fridays and Saturdays, when I wash the dishes at an Italian restaurant. I’m even learning some Italian!

I miss living at home, especially Mum’s cooking and your jokes. Edinburgh is very small compared with our city Toronto in Canada. And it’s cold, even in summer!

I miss you, little brother — write soon!

Yours,

Stan
