Blues a type of music, developed during the late 19th century in the United States. It was started by African American performers. We can say blues music started around 1890 though we don’t have many records about the early history of blues.

The first publication(發(fā)行) of blues sheet music was Hart Wand’s “Dallas Blues” in 1912. Then W.C.Handy’s “The Memphis Blues” followed in the same year. The first recording by an African American singer was Mamie Smith’s “Crazy Blues” in 1920.

World WarⅡmarked the changing from acoustic(原聲的) to electric blues and great opening of blues music to many people, especially some white listeners.

During the 1930s, the blacks travelled north towards Chicago. They brought with them blues music, and soon the sound of it filled night clubs in the city. Chicago became the center of blues music. A new type of blues was made—Chicago blues and it was more powerful than all types before.

Blues music became even more popular in the late 1950s. In 1958 the Kingston Trio recorded the number 1 hit, Tom Dooley, which was ranked(排名) first at American folk songs ranking list. For eight years, from 1958 to 1966 the Newport Fork Festival introduced folk and blues music to the white American people. Finally, it became popular among the whites.

After this time blues was fast merged(融合) with rock music to form the rock blues bands of the 1960s and 70s. The Rollings Stones, John Mayall, Led Zeppelin and others were all famous for their blues music. 【題目】

In 1997, a spaceship called Cassini was sent to explore Saturn (土星) and its moons. Now Cassini’s mission (使命) has come to an end. Scientists made it fall and bum up in 2017. But before that happened, the spaceship had made many trips between Saturn and its rings, sending photos and other information back to the Earth.

Cassini was a project carried out by NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. It took Cassini about seven years to reach Saturn.

Scientists have learned many exciting things from Cassini. In 2005, Cassini sent a space probe (探測器) to Saturn’s largest moon, Titan, so scientists could get a closer look at the moon’s surface. One of the most important discoveries Cassini made was that there is warm liquid water (液態(tài)水) under the ice that covers one of Saturn’s smaller moons, Enceladus. Scientists believe conditions on Enceladus could be similar to the conditions that led to the development of life on Earth.

Cassini’s mission was supposed to be ended in 2008, but because it was still in good shape, scientists increased its life to 2017. Cassini performed the last task of its mission on September 15, 2017.

When Cassini ran out of its fuel (燃料) and entered Saturn’s atmosphere (大氣層), it burned up. Scientists said it was necessary for Cassini to be totally destroyed (毀壞) so there was no chance that microbes (微生物) from the Earth could be harmful to any possible life on Saturn.

1What made scientists think that there might be life on Enceladus?

A. Animals’ waste was found.

B. They heard strange sounds.

C. Some ice was seen to cover it.

D. There is warm liquid water on it.

2What might happen if Cassini wasn’t totally destroyed?

A. It might destroy Saturn’s surface.

B. It will fall onto the Earth.

C. The microbes from the Earth might be bad for Saturn’s possible life.

D. It will continue to send back information.

3Which of the following things about Cassini is NOT mentioned?

A. Its findings. B. Its lasting time.

C. Its burning. D. Its later use.

4What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Cassini was a very successful and useful spaceship.

B. Cassini has stayed in Saturn for ten years.

C. The project of exploring Saturn was carried out by America alone.

D. Enceladus is the biggest moon of Saturn.

5What is the passage mainly about?

A. The process (過程) of sending Cassini to Saturn.

B. The moons and rings of Saturn.

C. The end of Cassini’s mission.

D. The life on Saturn.

【題目】

When I was seven years old, my family made me an ant farm. First, we put clean sand in a thin glass box. Then we waited for the ants to arrive.

After the ants were in the glass farm, they started to make tunnels (地道). I was amazed that each one knew exactly what to do. Each had its own job.

On the fifth day a tragedy (悲劇) happened. I put my face so close to the glass farm that I knocked it over. All the tunnels fell down. Although the ants remained alive after their earthquake, one by one they began to die. I was scared as I watched them give up building their tunnels to carry the bodies to a corner of the farm.

My mother said that the ants were dying of sadness. They simply could not stand that their tunnels were gone.

Although much time has passed, I still think of that ant farm. Mom had hoped it would teach me about the natural world, but it taught me much more.

Over the years, I came to realize the importance of teamwork. Working together, the ants were able to make an amazing world for themselves. I also learned that they should be admired for their hard work. But there was an even larger lesson that I did not realize until recently: Adversity (逆境) is a natural part of life, and must be accepted. Unlike the ants, we cannot give up when we are sad. We have to realize that if a tunnel is gone, we must build another.

Giving up, I say, is not a good choice.

1What did the writer’s family do for him when he was seven?

A. They made an ant farm. B. They bought a few ants.

C. They caught a lot of ants. D. They found an ant city.

2What happened on the fifth day?

A. The earthquake happened. B. The writer put his face on the ground.

C. The writer knocked the ant farm over. D. The ants started to make tunnels.

3What did the writer come to realize a few years later?

A. Working together is useless. B. Teamwork is important.

C. Adversity can’t be accepted. D. Working alone is amazing.

4Finally, the writer thinks that the ants died because ________.

A. they worked hard B. the writer made a mistake

C. the tunnel was gone D. they gave up when they met difficulties
